Concert Review of PJ Harvey Live at Terminal 5 in New York City, September 15, 2024

The multi-faceted and multi-talented British songwriter, singer, and musician PJ Harvey last toured the USA back in 2017 but I was unable to see her perform live that year due to work obligations. At last, on Sunday, September 15, 2024, I finally had the good fortune to snag tickets to one of her two sold-out shows at Terminal 5, which is located at West 56th Street in Manhattan. The standing-room-only venue was absolutely packed,  but I was thrilled to be there.  Having arrived a bit early, I was glad to find a spot only a few rows back from the front of the stage:  it was great to be able to see Harvey’s facial expressions and pantomime-like moves very clearly.  She has an amazingly theatrical presence on stage.

Jane Getter Premonition and PAKT Concert Review

I had a great time last Saturday evening seeing a double bill of Jane Getter Premonition and PAKT perform their respective musical magic at the Williams Center in Rutherford, New Jersey.  I had seen PAKT a few times before but last night they were really on fire. It is no accident that I now call their sound "volcanic music." I will explain what I mean by this in a bit.

Julie Byrne Storm King Arts Center Concert Review

Serendipity ruled the day last week when my wife Irene Fizer spotted an upcoming outdoor concert taking place in the Hudson Valley,  featuring the singer-songwriter Julie Byrne and the harpist Mary Lattimore.  Irene and I had been planning to check out the event space–the Storm King Arts Center in New Windsor, New York–for quite a while, as we’ve passed the Center several times over the past few years, on our way to DIA-Beacon. So, we felt fortunate to secure two tickets a few days before the show, and we started to plan what to pack for our al fresco dinner.  Although we missed the chance to partake in the picnic specials offered by several food vendors at the Center that night, we filled our own picnic basket with some gluten-free treats, and then set out for an easy hour-and-20 minute drive north, from our home in New Jersey to the Hudson Valley.

Join or Die is a film about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America may depend on it. In this feature documentary, follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis. Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly…What can we do about it?

Insightful documentary on Dancer Margaret Beals World Premieres at the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival on June 10!

Dancing Without Steps: The Art of Improvisation with Margaret Beals by Adriana Davis and Margaret Beals. Join acclaimed dance innovator, Margaret Beals, in her exploration of the art of improvisation. In this short documentary, Ms. Beals demonstrates the power and authenticity of improvisation as performance and also as a tool of discovery for any creative endeavor. Throughout this film, audiences are offered glimpses of Ms. Beals’ extensive career in improvisational dance. One of the first solo dancers to perform whole concerts without steps, she started her early career in the free-wheeling atmosphere of the 1960's club and cabaret scene and continued her pioneering journey through five more decades. In this film, Ms. Beals draws from various artists to give fuller context to her thoughts on improvisation. Keith Jarrett, renowned jazz pianist, reveals insights into his own creative process. Meredith Monk, award-winning composer, singer and creator of music-theater-film works, gives an insightful introduction to this documentary as well. 2023; 25 min. Virginia Yearick’s amazing docu-fiction feature film Possum Kingdom premieres at the 2023 New Jersey International Film Festival on June 4!

Possum Kingdom - Virginia K Yearick (New York, New York) On a run-down family farm in South Carolina, three generations of white men kill time in living rooms, open fields, and shallow water. The boredom that comes from the relative comfort and the slow decay around them leads them further and further into casual destruction. The film is an unscripted blend of documentary and fiction. Starring a mix of first-time actors, non-actors, and people playing alternate versions of themselves, most of the story takes place on a run down family farm, and we are introduced to members of the community that surrounds it. It may serve as both a neutral window into a way of life as well as a personal dreamland heavy with sentimentality. 2022; 91 min. Here is my interview with Possum Kingdom Director Virginia Yearick:

Emma Ruth Rundle’s Engine of Hell New York City Concert

I am a relative newcomer to Emma Ruth Rundle’s music but I have been playing her songs almost non-stop since 2022 when I became hooked on Electric Guitar: One which is her first solo album. That led me down the Rundle rabbit hole and I quickly purchased all her oeuvre as well as the albums she made with Thou, Nocturnes, Red Sparowes and Marriages. I was tempted to go see her play live in Toronto and Boston earlier this month, but those shows just didn’t jive with my teaching schedule at Rutgers University. So, it was with great anticipation that I headed to Rundle’s Easter gig at Le Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village. This show was originally planned to be the Tour’s finale, but she added another Boston show due to great demand.

Sandra Levine’s insightful documentary South Football’s Impossible Dream screens at the Spring 2023 New Jersey Film Festival on Saturday, February 25!  In 1968, Toms Rivers High School Football Coach Signorino challenged his players to believe in “The Impossible Dream” and they responded by delivering an undefeated season, 9-0. Toms River South had racked up a 19-game winning streak by the time the Hitting Indians faced the Middletown Lions, ranked No. 2, in a 1969 mythical state championship. A crowd, estimated at 10,000, gathered in South’s stadium on a bitterly cold November day to watch the two teams battle. Footage unearthed from the vaults of “The Greatest Game” and other matchups in the 1960s will be shown for the first time in more than five decades. This documentary film explores techniques used by legendary Toms River Coach Ron Signorino, Sr., to turn a losing high school football program in the mid-1960s, into a powerhouse, ranked No. 1 in the state.

Live Review: Cate Le Bon at Union Transfer in Philadelphia on October 6, 2022

I finally got to see Welsh singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cate Le Bon after missing her shows that took place earlier this year. I was turned on to Cate by my friend Yasha Goldentyer after he sent me a video link of her doing a fabulous cover of Bill Nelson’s Do You Dream In Colour at one of her recent concerts. I said to myself: Who the hell does covers of Bill Nelson songs? I was instantly hooked. So, I scooped up Le Bon’s six albums and dived into her very eclectic and enchanting music. Many have compared her to The Talking Heads, Kate Bush, Faust, and other art ensembles but Le Bon’s music and lyrics are truly her own and very original. Le Bon is a not just a musician, she is also an accomplished furniture maker as she learnt to make solid wood tables, stools, and chairs from scratch while making her highly acclaimed 2019 album Reward. Her songs are crafted in a similar manner: a lot of pain staking intricacy and detail involved in both. In an interview with Pitchfork, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco stated that Le Bon was "one of the best out there making music now."

Roxy Music Rocks NYC One Last Time

Roxy Music began its 50th Anniversary tour last week in Toronto and Washington, DC. Last night (September 12), their third show was at Madison Square Garden in New York City. I have seen Roxy and Bryan Ferry quite a few times since my first show in Paris, France back in 1979 but I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss this tour as it may very well be their last. The core band was reunited with guitarist Phil Manzanera, woodwinds/sax player Andy Mackay and drummer Paul Thompson back together again since their 2011 tour. The set list included songs from all of their eight studio albums with most coming from their big hit Avalon including the title track, The Main Thing, More Than This, and others. Surprisingly songs the performed a number of songs from For Your Pleasure including In Every Dream Home a Heartache, Do The Strand, Editions of You and The Bogus Man.

2021 United States Super 8 Film + DV Festival Celebrates 33rd Anniversary!

Super 8mm film was introduced in 1965 by Eastman Kodak at the World’s Fair in New York to help the average person document their everyday lives. Super 8mm was most widely used for filming home movies between the mid 1960s till the early 1990s. Today amateur usage of Super 8mm has been replaced by digital video but the format is still regularly used by filmmakers, artists and students. Some hope to imitate the look of old home movies. Others want to create alternative looks for flashback sequences and altered states of consciousness. Some just like the idea of creating images in the classic style of using actual film. Super 8mm is a relatively inexpensive film, making it popular among filmmakers working on a low budget who still want to achieve the look of real film. Super 8mm has become quite common in theatrical features. J.J. Abrams 2011 film Super 8 pays homage to the little film format. Guy Maddin’s surreal 2006 film Brand Upon The Brain and Jim Jarmusch’s 1997 film Year of the Horse -- a documentary on Neil Young’s band Crazy Horse -- use it too.

Brand X Rides Again!

During my first semester at Binghamton University (aka SUNY-Binghamton), in 1976, Brand X-- a terrific progressive rock ensemble--came to my rescue. I was playing for the Binghamton soccer team and often had to get up early on Saturday mornings, as the team would depart at that time for games. Unfortunately, my dorm floor-mates would stay up late partying and singing songs from Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush, The Grateful Dead’s American Beauty and others all through Friday nights and into the wee hours of Saturday mornings. I was not getting any sleep as a result despite my banging on their walls and doors. When they finally went to sleep one night at 4AM I got a couple of well-needed hours of shut-eye. At the same time, I was not going to let them get away with keeping me up, so I plotted my revenge as soon as I got up at 6AM. I was going to blast the loudest and most intense music I could find in my record collection at that ungodly hour and give them a taste of their own medicine. The album that I chose was Brand X’s Unorthodox Behaviour. The first track, entitled “Nuclear Burn,” would be the perfect retaliatory wake-up call. The title tells you all you need to know about how loud this song can get. As soon as “Nuclear Burn” blasted out of my speakers, I could hear (if barely) my floor-mates desperately banging on my door and walls. Revenge was sweet. From that day forward, Brand X has remained very dear to my heart.

Witty and sexy feature It Plays Like Love premieres this Friday, September 25, 2015 at New Jersey Film Festival!

A witty and inventive feature film, It Plays Like Love is about a theatre director who hopes to prove that love existed by recreating it on the stage. The movie weaves together four narrative threads: the rehearsals for the play; the director’s memories of the past (which are unreliable, at best); a dinner party with his frustrated cast; and cast auditions (shot with real actors opening up about their love lives). With its mix of scripted drama, honest confessions, timeless questions, confusion, and humor, It Plays Like Love adds up to an experience greater than the sum of its parts.
