"I play a little guitar so I write songs on the guitar or on the keyboard but nothing I'm comfortable with playing in front of people," laughed 3 Pairs of Boots vocalist Laura Arias as her and husband Andrew Stern are getting ready to drop a new 10-track release titled "Boot Scootin'" on September 27. 

"Boot Scootin'" will be the couple's fourth album and the title is almost as interesting as their name and their history. 

"Laura and I have been married for a while and we've had several music projects and we were in a rock band for a while and dabbled in some other things and then sort of came into the Americana thing and realized that was what we really wanted to do and it's, certainly for Laura, it's in her wheelhouse. There is some truth as to how we pulled together because we met years ago when I was on a recording and songwriting project and we put out an ad for a singer and Laura answered the ad and that's how we got together. We definitely got together because of a music project; it's just the one that was  before 3 Pairs of Boots." 

"Well, when we first started this project,"  continued Andy, "A friend of ours was helping us with some songwriting and recording and we thought maybe he was gonna hang around for a while. He's a long time friend who has been in and out of various musical projects with us throughout the years and he's great at starting and then he kind of quickly moves on to something else and that's what happened here but when we started I was trying to think of a name that could incorporate three people. I really don't know how I came up with the name, I have no memory as to how I came up with it. I just wanted something to get across the Americana vibe we were doing and of course the fact there were three of us doing it and we wrote some songs and did some recording but then he dropped out and Laura and I went on to make the first record and here we are four years later with out fourth record coming out. He does come back from time to time to help; there's a song on this current record where he's doing some whistling because he's a really good whistler; I'm a terrible whistler."

Stern says putting a finger on their sound can be a bit intriguing as well and he cites their many influences as the reason why claiming they've got so many that things get somewhat "Mashed" together.

"I think 3 Pairs of Boots is just a mashup of all of the influences we've ever had playing music. So, we're a little difficult to pigeon hole, we're not a straight country act. When I started playing in my teens, I was totally into the English guitar players; Peter Green, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Hendrix which is how I kind of learned how to play by listening to their records. Later on, I realized; we did an Americana song years ago for a placement opportunity  and it turned out really good and we had a lot of fun doing it and I thought Laura was great in that particular style and I realized how the West Coast bands had influenced me early on like Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, CSN and bands like that. So, I was like, Oh! I guess that guy Stephen Stills really did have a big influence on me! I hadn't played as much acoustic guitar but I really loved doing it and 3 Pairs of Boots was an opportunity for me to get more into that. So, it's interesting how all of the things we grew up with and things we like have mashed together. We're certainly Country/Folk leaning but with touches of Rock 'n' Roll. There's a song on the first record where our mix guy shut the song off in the middle of a session and said, "OK, when does Morrissey start singing? You've got that really nice jangly guitar solo thing here." I was like, OK, I can see that. So, these things kind of creep in, all of these influences from all these different places whether it's Bach, The Smiths or Johnny Cash, it's like we're making a stew or something. We grew up in the Bay Area where there wasn't that much compartmentalization; you could go to a show and see Rock, Jazz, Folk and Blues all in the same show. So, it just seemed natural to us to do it this way; just kind of letting our influences seep in to produce a good sound. We were born and raised in San Francisco and it's quite the melting pot." 

Marriage; it's been said that, "It's not a word, it's a sentence" and when you're married and have to string together many sentences to create a song or one's art; it can be tough working together but not so says this dynamic pair.

"We tend to write separately," explains Stern, "Although there is one song on the album that we wrote together.; we're both songwriters and this album is pretty much split down the middle. We each have an equal number of songs on there; "Boot Scootin'" was mine; it was an idea I had. I had written a song a few years back based on the guy, the Caller at a square dance and I wanted to put it forward because I realized that I'd been playing music for so long and there is so much joy to it. I realized that when I was playing music in the studio or at a rehearsal that everything else in my life would stop. I wasn't worried about paying the bills or where I'd have to be tomorrow and that kind of thing. Dancing is one of those things that when you get on the dance floor, you're not really worried about anything else. So, it was really one of those things where people could find their passion and joy, let go of their troubles and have a moment to just be free. So, I wrote this song about square dancing and it was a failure. We did a demo on it and Laura said, "I'm never gonna sing that song again" and then it evolved and came back full circle and I wrote "Boot Scootin'" and this time the idea was a success. Laura tends to be the A & R of the band since she's the singer so if she doesn't want to sing it, it ain't gonna make it on the record."

This duo doesn't necessarily ":Dabble" in other people's tunes but if they do cover another's song; the process can be at times; lengthy.

"It's challenging to write no matter what and if you have to sing something that someone else wrote; I would say there is lot of humility involved and it's challenging because, yeah, I do know what you were thinking when you wrote your song but what about being entrusted when you're singing someone else's song? You really have to climb inside the track and you really have to dig; I enjoy doing that," said Laura.

"That's one of the challenges of songwriting for me because I'm writing for Laura," interjected Andy. "I'm writing for her voice, I'm writing for what she may want to sing about; I'm not saying I'm writing songs from a female perspective but sometimes I am taking that kind of point of view because every time I write a song, I'm thinking of  Laura and how she sings and how it will translate for her and that's always almost forefront in my mind. That's really the thing," she said once again."The thing that you're; I don't want to say fighting but it's very true, everybody has the original version of a cover song in their mind and here you come doing something different; it's kind of fun. We dabbled with a few cover songs back when we were doing the live streams during the pandemic," recounted Andy, " We were searching for one or two songs to do and I just think that is so challenging. You want to stay true to the song but yet you want to put your own stamp on it. You just don't want to do it the same way the original artist did it. We went through dozens and dozens of songs trying to find something we could do justice to and make it original but still retain the flavor and what we loved about the original song."

Come September 27 when "Boot Scootin'" hits the market; where do they go from here? 

"I don't want to say we're prolific but when we get into that writing mode; I'm a quantity songwriter and Laura is a quality songwriter; she writes less songs than I do but more of her songs tend to make it on the record, let's put it that way (laughs). We tend to write a lot of songs, we love working in the studio and recording. We're sort of talking about what we want to do next; we may be going back to Nashville to record a five song or an acoustic country, folkie thing with some hired guns in the studio. Up until now, the records have been primarily me playing all the stringed instruments with a couple of hired guns to play drums and keyboards and of course one is in L.A. and the other in Nashville and you kind of swap files because that's how it works these days.  This is the fourth full-length record and it's still fresh and fun for us; we hope we're getting better every time out (Laughs). We do have CDs, we have a turntable in the house, a jukebox in the kitchen, so we'd love to get vinyl done but it's not the cheapest thing to do so, we'll see."

"The road thing is a challenge, it's not cheap," he went on, "We have done gigs around here. We've done them as a duo, a trio, we've done a few full band gigs but right now we're kind of working towards going out as a trio or possibly a quartet but we're rehearsing to do a trio acoustically but the next person I add into that will be a multi-instrumentalist; somebody who can compliment the acoustic side; mandolin, banjo, lap steel, violin; someone like that. We have done a couple of full band shows but to truly go on the road outside of the Bay Area; the logistics and monetary limitations; until we have the right places, venues and right amount of money, we're just gonna be more lean and mean and do it more acoustically which is a challenge because the records we've been doing are essentially full band records and now we're translating the songs into stripped down acoustic versions which is great and fun and challenging and just shows us which of the songs on these records truly work as a song no matter whether it's full band or totally stripped down. You kind of get to the essence of a song when you strip it down to an acoustic guitar, a bass player and a singer. I think, when you initially see us play live, it'll be an acoustic version which will be different from what the records sound like. Our manager, who is out of Nashville, has really been encouraging about us doing that. She has always said that she hates seeing a band live that sounds exactly like the record and that's not going to be us because the records are fairly layered and not that easy to reproduce live even under the best of circumstances." 

"I don't think there are as many venues in our area as there used to be," he lamented. "So, that is a challenge and we're trying to figure out where exactly we're gonna do this live besides the gig here or there where we live. We've seriously considered; do we go back to Tennessee? There seems to be more venues there, so that's a possibility. We did the video for "Boot Scootin'" and we're about to do another one , so we're mainly promoting on radio, through social media and video."

"Trying to get gigs is problematic," added Laura. "I don't know why that is but it is unless you have a big agency working for you or if you're a big act. They have no problem getting the limited amount of spaces; right? So, it has been kind of a struggle so we just focus on what we do well and what we can do."
