"It's a one-off thing; I'm not exaggerating, every weekend we are doing multiple shows and by the end of the year we'll probably wind up doing about 68 one-offs and plus we're doing a seven week tour that's 35 shows so we'll be right around 100 shows for the year. This show is a one-off, we're flying in just for this show. We're working more than any band I know, I talk to other bands and they are like, man, you guys are awesome, you're killing it and I say, we're trying to, we're killin' something, hopefully not ourselves," laughed Everclear's main man Art Alexakis as he talked about their most recent release "Live at the Whisky A Go Go," the music industry and their upcoming August 8 show at Camden's Cooper River Park.
Formed in Portland, Oregon circa 1991, things really took a fortuitous turn for the band when their 1995 album, "Sparkle and Fade" produced hit singles "Santa Monica (Watchthe World Die)"and it's B-side "Heroin Girl" which would go on to catapult the band to upper echelons of the rock genre.
Alexakis feels that the true essence of Everclear can be found more so in their live performances as their raw stage energy and enthusiasm is on full display, which is why the release of "Live at the Whisky A Go Go" is something extra special.
"Technically our first live album was a thing we recorded for Sony that they put out a limited amount of back in 2010," he explained. "They only pressed 3,000 or 4,000 CDs and now, nobody can find it; I don't even have it. That was basically a live show they got from a club and mixed it, I listened to it and I don't love it but I was like, OK, it's fine. This is technically our first live album that I produced and I wanted to do it differently. Instead of doing multiple shows like most people and putting studio applause on it and stuff like that using Pro Tools, I wanted to record one show live with very minimal editing, very minimal cleaning up and I think it's a really honest and good document of where our live show is at right now. We put a couple of new songs we recorded last year and put those on there as well. So, when Sunset Blvd. Records came to me and asked if I wanted to put out a record, I said, "No, I don't want to do another studio record" and they said, "What about a live album?" So, I paid to have a recording and it came out really great and I'm so proud of it. I didn't want to do another studio album; I have 11 of them, I'm OK. I've got major labels asking me to do one; the last thing I need to do is put an album out on a major label who wants to take 30 percent of mine and my band's income for perpetuity and for life; no."

Ah yes, the major labels, love them or hate them, are still involved in the industry, albeit in a far different way and when asked about those labels and their business practices; Alexakis didn't hold back his response.
"Well, it's because they are all run by non-music people and multinational corporations and it's a small part of what they do. Are there real music people still at those labels? Sure but they're not enough to be able to move the needle as far as making music for music's sake. Those days for major labels are pretty much gone and I'm sure there are people there that I know, who won't like to hear me say that and God bless them but until they prove to me otherwise, that's what I've seen. There are a lot of great indie and smaller labels that are just killing it right now and doing great work and putting out great records because the good music is not on the major labels and they are hopefully making a living from it. Every label wants to make a profit but it's not like Spotify where that guy just spent 88 million dollars on a house and doesn't want to pay the artists anything or pays point zero, zero of one percent; get out of here! That's not money! Our last album came out in 2015 and we did a deal with Spotify to stream the album; people would have to stream the whole album and we did over two-and-a-half million streams. I'm not kidding and I'm not exaggerating, I made $687.52. That is shameful, that's beyond robbery, that's just flat out theft; really? C'mon, you can make a profit, the labels can make a profit and still pay the artist something decent so we can make a living and make music; it boggles the mind. To be honest, the percentages have always been slanted and it's always been that way even back in the days of the major labels. Sure, they'd give you a couple of hundred thousand dollars in advance in order to make the record but then they'd own you forever. Then they pay you a profit share of like 14 cents so you are making like a buck-forty on the records from the original deal and with that money, you have to recoup all of that money they invested; talk about a Ponzi scheme! Talk about just straight up villains, they're villains and always have been going back to when they were giving Little Richard 500 bucks and a Cadillac and that's all he made."
Did that ever discourage him from continuing? Not at all and he knows that for every band that doesn't have the ultimate success or obtain great heights; sometimes it's all a matter of timing.
"Playing music is fucking fun and it's great to get paid anything but let's not forget, a lot of it is still being in the right place at the right time and there is always an element of success that you can't work on by working on just certain aspects of it because there are just certain parts that just kind of "Happen" that you have to be grateful for."
"You also have success by playing the same whether it's in front of 5 people or 50,000 but let's be honest, everyone tries to do that and yeah, you have to put on a show but when you're playing in front of 50,000 people or like we did when we played Woodstock in '99 with 300,000 people singing my song, singing "Santa Monica" back to me; dude, that's not the same deal, it's just not."
Speaking of performing; how is their stage show these days, what does Alexakis look for from a stage performance and has he ever been impressed by a band he's seen for the first time?
"Our set is 75 minutes; we don't have that many hits but we play the hits we have, all of our fan favorites and people request stuff on our social media and if we know the song we play the song. We know a very large part of our back catalog; it's like this tour we're doing in the Fall, the bus tour that's gonna celebrate 25 years of our record, "Songs froman American Movie," we'll still do all the hits and fan favorites from the other albums but we'll concentrate on doing a lot of songs from that album as well. So, it differs from show to show but I think the album, "Live at the Whisky A Go Go" is pretty indicative of our live show right now. We've always been a rowdier band live than in the studio because the time when I grew up in the '70s, bands would make more produced records and live they'd be heavier and faster and louder because it was more two-dimensional and it wasn't just listening over and over and over again and so I've always bought into that. To me, a great live band is a band you've never heard of before and they come out and play and blow you away and that's a great live band. Then there is the band that you may know some of their songs but surprise you how tight they are and they're smart, sharp and having fun on stage and that's what we aspire to be. Everybody in my band, we want to play rock 'n' roll, we want to play our music, play my songs and it's exciting and it's fun. There are so many bands who get up there and look like they're doing you a favor and they take themselves too seriously. We don't take ourselves seriously, we take our music seriously, we take what we do and our performances seriously and that's it. The first band I ever saw that blew me away like that, I'd heard of them but had never heard their music, was on New Year's Eve and they were opening for Kansas in Long Beach; I was living in Santa Monica, I was a kid who was 15 going on 16 and I saw Cheap Trick opening for Kansas and they fucking blew me away, just absolutely blew me away. My friend who drove said, "I've got their tape in my car" and we listened to it all the way back to Santa Monica and when we got out of the car, I stole the tape (laughs)."

"Another band like that was Jane's Addiction. I was at a new music night at this place called The Music Machine in West L.A.; it's not there anymore, I think it's a camera shop now and I guess that was in 1985 or '86 and I went there that night to see this band that I used to be in to check out the band because I wanted to check out their new guitar player. I had left the band to start my own band but I wanted to see if the new guitar player was any good. We sat with them and this other band and my buddy said, "Hey, let's go down to The Whore House and drink;" this was back when I was still drinking and I said, no, I want to stay and see this next band called Jane's Addiction. He said, "Cool, Jane might be hot (laughs)" he thought Jane's Addiction was a girl singer and they fucking come out and it was like seeing Led Zeppelin. There were probably about 20 people there, including the people that worked there and it was like a Monday or a Tuesday night and they were amazing. They had strobe lights, vocals going through effects, they had that shit down. They had all been in other bands, this was the band where they weren't fucking around and it was unbelievable. I know Eric and Stephen from the band and when I tell them about that show they tell me it was their second show ever and at the end of the night people were just like; what the fuck was that? They were just amazing."
So, success comes in many forms and in most cases is a blessing and in some, a curse and for those such as Alexakis who had a rough past, it could have been the latter. Once "Santa Monica (Watch the World Die)" broke the band wide open, he says it was the former.
" Oh definitely better," he said as if the answer was plain as day. "That doesn't mean that success doesn't come with pitfalls, of course it does, it's life changing. My life is definitely better, I was broke until that song but I think if I was still using at the time and not sober when it happened, I think it would've killed me."
