Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...3/6/25

Rock On! This Week

"The band is based in Boston, we all live near and around here; we travel as far north as Rockland in Maine, as far south as Miami and we've been as far west as House Of Blues in Cleveland. We couch surf, so we are a lean, mean, fighting machine; we can play somewhere and then stay with fans and friends and then move on to the next town and live in a van on pizza," laughed Conrad Warre of Bees Deluxe as h talked of their upcoming area gigs at The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton, NJ, The Cutting Room in NYC and Jamey's House of Music in Lansdowne, PA.

When one first listens to Bees Deluxe, bands such as Steely Dan immediately come to mind but as one gets deeper into their catalog, a myriad of sounds permeate their material. So, how did the band come together? Well, Warre says, "It's simple."

"I'm from London originally and when I was in London, I worked as a band manager, a guitar player and band leader, a music journalist, a record producer; I kind of did all of those things and as you can tell, I love music so much that I wanted to be completely drowning in it," he began with a laugh. "My then girlfriend moved to New York and I followed her and started all over again. I put together a three piece band that played at CBGB on a Monday night for nothing and then on the owner/booker/manager's advice, we sort of moved up to Saturdays and we kept playing there. Then, my girl got a job in Boston so we moved up to Boston and then I put this band together which is sort of a modern blues band rather than the progressive rock we used to play at CBGB which is now unlistenable (Laughs). I listen to the tracks I did when I was a kid and I think, why are there so many tempo changes? Why so many key changes? I guess as I got older I decided that it's OK to be simple, it's OK to be straight, it's OK to be something that people think they might have heard before."

"We are typically a four-piece band," he continued. "We have a keyboard player who plays harmonica and does background vocals named Carol Band and we discovered her playing at Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge on a Grand Piano so we stole her; she can read and write and everything (Laughs) and we found Paul Giovine who is in Framingham which is close to Boston, he comes from essentially a sort of Punk Rock background in Darling Picassos who toured all over America; he brings high energy to the concept. We have a brilliant bass player in Boston called Adam Sankowski but he can't go as far as Miami because he teaches music to children in Mass General Hospital as therapy, so he has to be back at work at 9 a.m. on Monday morning. So, then we'll use a bass player who I used to play at CBGB with named Jeff Lopez who lives in New Jersey. So, when we cross the border or go south we change bass players; like crossing the dateline (Laughs). He's a fabulous musician, he was in the Army and used to play in the Army Band in the garden of The White House. He's a Jazz composer, he writes big band stuff and he knows more about music than I can ever learn. So, they're all killers, they're great!"

A quote from a recent press release says their sound is "Acid Blues," something that is not a known genre but Warre says the band tagged themselves as such.

"We kind of invented it ourselves and what I mean by "Acid Blues" is, you're not gonna hear us play "Got My Mojo Working" the way Muddy Waters played it; which lots of bands do and they have a lot of fun with it. A) we're not gonna do a song that everybody does and B) we're not gonna do it the way it was written and when we get into the middle of one or the intro or the outro, we're gonna blow it up and it becomes Jazz at that point even though it's still the same groove that was required to play that song. So, it  becomes improvised and then we come back to the dry land of what the tune was. In my mind, it's kind of like a be-bop band playing a Broadway standard. Charlie Parker would take a tune from a Broadway show and like Coltrane playing "All My Favorite Things," it just goes off somewhere else completely imaginary and then it comes back again. So, that's the acid part of playing it, we're not gonna play it the way you expect us to play it. We blend our original music into the covers we've rearranged when playing live; for instance, we play our version of "Loan Me A Dime" by Fenton Robinson but not the way he wrote it and we'll play a Robert Cray song like, "Bad Influence" but not the way he wrote it."

Like Jazz music, Blues music also relies heavily on improvisation as well but Warre states that Bees Deluxe goes a bit deeper; actually embracing the "No limits" approach as often as possible.

"We played a date at The Bull Run and in the audience there was a guitar player named Ronnie Earl and he said, "Can I sit in?" I said, "Of course" we had a spare amp and a guitar and he played with us and at the end of the show he and I chatted and he said, "You guys play all the notes" meaning, it's not just E-minor pentatonic. We actually dig into it because we have the minimum required technical skill to say, it doesn't have to be that note, we can play that one and then come off it and recover. Many bands will stick to the same black notes on the piano and that's OK but we want to change it. We actually want to be able to change keys on the fly or change which chord we're going to; without getting too technical, the Blues is typically, 1-4-1-4-1-5-4-1 which are three chords and everybody knows three chords on the guitar. We'll go, let's not do that, we'll go 1-3 or let's go 1-7. So, we'll switch up and it sounds familiar because it has the right feel, it gives you the same tension and pleasure but it doesn't sound exactly the way Muddy Waters played it or Buddy Guy and that's the reward for playing with Jazz musicians because they'll go, this is cool, I can actually get my teeth into this."

"Everybody loves B.B. King of course, that's what I grew up listening to," he continued. "I had an American girlfriend when I was in school as a kid and she introduced me to B.B. King, I listened to that and Peter Green but now I try not to listen to that because I don't want to become that. So, I listen to stuff that's a little more outside like Wayne Krantz, Coltrane and Davis of course. I find that it's important for me not to listen to stuff that sounds like I might be trying to play it. There are too many times I'll go out to hear another band and I'll go, yeah, I've heard that, I know where you got that from (Laughs). It's kind of like saying for a piano player, I've got to tie one hand behind my back so I can think of new ideas. I'm the principal songwriter, Carol has written a piece on "Hallucinate" that is dedicated to a dear friend of ours. When we'd tour through Brooklyn in New York, we'd stay with our friend J.R. and we'd get to his house at one in the morning and he'd open a bottle of wine and he had a piano in his front room. He'd go to the piano and say, "Carol, teach me how to play "96 Tears" and the two of them would play for hours. He passed away last year in a sad accident and so she wrote that tune in dedication to his memory."

Sometimes, the "No limits" approach is fantastic and other times there needs to be some structure, especially when songwriting and/or recording and yet other times; well, that's where a good producer comes in.

"Recently, we put out an album called "Smash Hits" which is an ironic term; which has some live tracks on it and some demos and some very, very old recorded tracks that I thought I'd bring back to the front. We work in a studio in Hyde Park, which sounds very grand but it's in a working class neighborhood south of Boston where we work in the basement with our producer Joe Egan and we put tunes together there. Sometimes I'll record a bunch of stuff and then leave and say, "Have a go at it, see what you can make of it," kind of like handing him a bunch of wool and saying, here; can you make a sweater out of this? (Laughs). He's worked on our last three or four albums with us and is a wonderful musician in his own rite and plays keyboards with us when we can't find Carol."

Their March 28 gig at The Cutting Room in New York City will be a first for the band but The Lizzie Rose and Jamey's; let's just say, they are very familiar.

"The Lizzie Rose Music Room is Saturday March 22 and it's a fabulous room and we love playing there.. All of the people who work there are volunteers, they do it because they love the music. It's small and everybody has a front row seat essentially and it's like playing in a cathedral. There is a stained glass ceiling behind you and the acoustics are wonderful, the sound guy is great; we've played there as openers for Mike Zito and Joanna Connor."

"Jamey's House of Music is Saturday March 29 which is the night after The Cutting Room. We've played Jamey's many times and we've become good friends with Jamey and Greg Gaughn. It's really rewarding to play to people who are listening and really paying attention. Sometimes we play a dive bar in Falmouth called Grumpy's and it's full of kids who are having fights in the car park, playing pool, chasing girls, drinking too much, totally ignoring us; kind of like The Blues Brothers behind the chain link fence (Laughs), it's a totally different vibe and we're looking at each other going, this is crazy but at Jamey's or The Lizzie Rose, you are actually playing the best you can to reward them for that attention."

Warre likes to keep the band busy and 2025 is no exception. What is in store for Bees Deluxe after this run of shows?

"We've got bookings all through the year up and down the coast and we're working on material for another album probably to come out late this year or early next year. I have this dream of writing an instrumental album for horror films which one day I'll get to; I've just got sketches of ideas and maybe one day we'll actually find time to do a practice or a rehearsal (Laughs). Also, constantly repairing equipment because when you play for three hours, something is bound to fall off your guitar."
