Rock On! This Week

"I'm in the middle of the Caribbean somewhere, I'm thrilled I have cell phone service so this is great," laughed extraordinary Blues artist Sue Foley as she telephoned from the Legendary Blues Cruise to discuss her upcoming February 7 South Orange Performing Arts Center show The South Orange International Blues Festival: Winter Edition 2025  organized by the talented Mike Griot also featuring Alexis P. Sutter and Rae Simone.

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Foley has navigated her career through an often tough Blues music scene and along the way has garnered Blues Awards, Grammy nominations and many accolades. So; how does a lady from Canada get interested in the music of the U.S. deep South?

"I just loved the music," she began enthusiastically. "I got into it when I was a teenager when I was really into the Rolling Stones and found out they were a blues band when they started out and that kind of led me down the rabbit hole of listening to early blues records and then going out to see blues shows and it just kind of got under my skin and into my heart. It's just really special music, it's a really important art form and in the music world; blues just has so much depth and soul and I think it really encompasses the whole human experience in so many ways, it's just a beautiful art form. I do think things are a little easier to access now because of the internet for one, you can find any kind of stuff in a seconds notice at your fingertips and we didn't have that. People now can explore all of this stuff and it's great."

Debuting in 1992 with the album, "Young Girl Blues," the first of many, her latest release, "One Guitar Woman A Tribute to The Female Pioneers Of Guitar" has won much critical acclaim and with its acoustic nature, it also means a great deal to Foley on a personal level.

"It's just something that has always been on my mind. Ever since I started out as a guitar player I noticed the discrepancy of numbers, women to men and I knew I was gonna play guitar; I saw a lot of guys doing it, especially lead guitar but I didn't see a lot of women doing it. Now, there are a lot more, which is great and I don't think there is that much of a barrier but when you think back to these pioneering women, they really didn't have any role models. They had to create themselves, they were unique characters and I'm just really drawn to that. I'm drawn to that idea; they were just thinking way out of the box as far as what their life could be; I'm not gonna be a housewife, I'm not gonna be a mother. Although some of them were mothers, some weren't and they just took a different path in life and I wanted to play guitar too and I just thought that was so interesting. I've always really valued the idea of having role models and females I could look up to, especially people like Memphis Minnie in blues because being a young white girl from Canada, it didn't seem like being a blues guitar player would be within my reach. Then I discovered Memphis Minnie and realized that yea, she did it in the 1930s and '40s and so I can do it too, It is within my reach. I could use her as an inspiration and to kind of guide me and that's kind of what it's all about."

"Blues music," she continued, "One thing about blues music is there has always been really strong female performers from the very start and some of the first blues stars were women. I think the blues as a genre has always had these really strong women who assert themselves in a certain way and it's just great now. The scene is quite vibrant and it's really healthy."

"One Guitar Woman" as it has come to be known, is out on Stony Plain Records, a label which she is very fond of, "Yeah, it's a Canadian label, a great label. I've known them a long time, I have a long history with them, I've done my last few albums with them. We know them through the Canadian scene, they are a good label and nice people."

The winner of four Blues Foundation "Traditional Blues Female Artist" awards from 2020 through 2024, Foley constantly puts herself out there which has her once again, nominated for the same award in 2025.

"I'm up for it again this year," she laughed excitedly. "I'm heading to L.A for the Grammy Awards tomorrow; I'm leaving the Caribbean, heading to L.A., back to Austin for one day and then heading up to see you guys. In a way, we're always on tour because we are constantly traveling but these final few shows are a string of dates that are tacked onto the end of this run; we're doing South Orange, New York City and Washington, DC. When I come to South Orange, I will have a band. I do both, sometimes I perform solo for a whole show but when we come to SOPAC and for the International Blues Festival, we will be a full band. So, it's my trio plus me doing some solo work as well, so I sort of do a hybrid show, acoustic/electric and It'll be at least 75 minutes. I'm not sure of the exact length because there are several acts."
