Rock On! This Week

"I'm thrilled because it's our first time at The Lizzie Rose; it's a venue I've always wanted to play at and it's in your backyard and so, we finally get to meet in person after all of these years," laughed an excited Gina Coleman of Massachusetts based Misty Blues.

Proof positive of the old cliche` "Never give up," Coleman and her crew have been recording, performing and touring for more than two decades and over the last few years doors haven't opened, they've been kicked down.

"This year happens to be our 25th Anniversary year. We've been doing Blues and contemporary Blues for a quarter of a century," began Gina."This year we released two albums which brings us up to 16 albums in total as a band and actually, we just finished arranging our seventeenth album and it's still a little up in the air as to when it will be released but it will be soon-ish (Laughs). There is nothing I love more other than playing out live than recording; I have a passion for both of those and thankfully, we are pretty prolific. So, I can satiate that need whenever I want; any time you speak to me, I have an album in the can. I can pull together tracks for another album as we speak. Even though we just finished arranging the seventeenth, I have the eighteenth ready (Laughs); that's why we're building our own recording studio, that's the next project (Laughs)."

Over their time spent together, the band has always had success. They had been to the finals of the International Blues Challenge (IBC), had airplay on Sirius XM's "Bluesville" and hit the Summer festival circuit but it wasn't until what was thought to be a "Prank" that those aforementioned doors came unhinged.

"I almost hung up on Joe Louis Walker," she said with a loud laugh, "That was a near miss on my part. I thought he was one of my buddies pranking me. He called me on my cell phone and said, "This is Joe Louis Walker" and I was like, "Yes, sure it's Joe Louis Walker; to what do I count this gracious call from you?" I was snarky as all heck and he was laughing hysterically and said, "No, it's really Joe Louis Walker. Danny Coleman told me..." and I thought, Oh my gosh, "I'm so sorry Mr. Walker (Laughs)." We've had the great fortune of opening for him on several shows since and my band and I have spent a good amount of time chatting with him. We love him and we love his band, he's just a phenomenal individual. Early Times is on our 25th Anniversary album "Silver Lining"  on the title track and he did a fantastic job. Eliza Neals and I have been talking back and forth, we're thinking of setting up a double bill somewhere; I've got to circle back with her, we need to make that happen."

Beyond those mentioned above, the band has also recorded with Neville Brothers, Eric Gales, Kat Riggins and have opened for Tab Benoit, John Primer and the great Albert Cummings. They have toured the UK, which produced a live record from a famed location, added two more that pay homage to one of Coleman's favorite talents and two studio releases; one of which was produced by a two-time Grammy winner.

"We've had five albums in the past two years. "Silver Lining" and "Outside the Lines" which is the original album that Marc Swersky produced for us and there was "Live at The Cavern Club." As of this morning, the latest Odetta album is "Number One" on the Folk charts for The Roots Music Report. Both of the Odetta albums are named after quotes from Odetta. I met Odetta in the early to mid-nineties at an Arlo Guthrie concert at The Bottom Line in New York City. We were both guests of Arlo's and she was seated next to me at this giant reserved table and before the show started, a patron rushed up to her and said, "Do you remember me? Do you remember me?" Odetta kind of recoiled a bit and said, "Child, I'm too old for games, tell me who you are." So, the first album is, "Tell Me Who You Are" and this latest album is, "I'm Too Old For Games."

Early in Coleman's career her vocals had a somewhat higher register but as time and genres changed, it has morphed into one of the best Blues voices with a touch of Gospel that goes from guttural bass to just below where she started making her and the band's sound one of the most recognizable around but she says things didn't start out that way.

"Actually, I started more in Folk to be honest; it was acoustic Folk Funk that I started with (Laughs) with my band Cole-Connection. I then got an opportunity to do a theater production of "A Raisin in the Sun" where I was asked to sing Gospel Blues selections and that's when the lead actor of the production said, "Your voice is really perfectly suited for the Blues" and he gave me this CD collection called, "Men Are Like Street Cars" and it's a double disc collection of all female Blues artists from like 1928 to 1969. All female blues classics; songs I'd heard individually but when combined into this collective; it was transformative. So, I went to the guys in my former band, Cole-Connection and said, "Let's mix things up, let's become a blues band" and then off the top of my head I said, "Let's call ourselves Misty Blues" and that's how it began in 1999."

Like so many five years ago, they were on top of the world until the world stopped with the COVID virus but once it opened back up and shows and touring resumed the road was theirs once again but one road, until now has never been traveled

"We made it to the finals of the International Blue Challenge in 2019. We were riding high and going to festivals all over the place. We were doing so well and then the pandemic hit.," she explained. "I actually have not, we have never played in New Jersey; that is the funniest thing. How did New Jersey elude us? We've played everywhere in the Northeast except for Jersey; it's like an odd blind spot, I don't get it (Laughs). I've heard of The Lizzie Rose, it's infamous (Laughs). My saxophonist Aaron Dean has played the room on several occasions because he's in a Van Morrison tribute band called "Moondance" and they play there at least once a year and he says, "It's the coolest room" so, I'm so happy to go back with Misty Blues. Aaron said it's a bigger version of a very cool place we play here in Western Massachusetts that we love to play at called The Dream Away Lodge in Becket, Massachusetts which is supposedly an old brothel (Laughs) and they have a music room where Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Arlo Guthrie used to hang out and create music in. So, it has got a history as well and he equates The Lizzie Rose to The Dream Away but he thinks The Lizzie Rose is slightly bigger; you can't really put seating in The Dream Away, people sit on the floor. Now that's dedication, if I sat on the floor, you'd need a Hoyer Lift to get me off of it (Laughs)."

Rock On! This Week

Upon speaking with those in the know at Tuckerton's Lizzie Rose Music Room, they are just as excited to have Gina and the guys for their 7:30 p.m. January 17 appearance and Coleman says there may be a surprise or two.

I assume we are doing two sets, I"ve not looked at the advance yet but we are prepared to play straight through, we have plenty of material; you know that. My son Diego will be with us on the gig, I'm bringing six of us total. We just may have to sneak in a couple of the new songs, we shall see (Laughs)."

Now receiving regular radio airplay, more opportunities and the credit they have always deserved, Misty Blues can breathe a bit more easily; or can they? The day after the Lizzie Rose show, they have a gig back in their home state, the first of many more to come.

"Sunday January 18, we head to Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York where we'll be doing their MLK programming and doing selections from both of our Odetta live tribute albums. The Caffe Lena is probably the longest running Folk club in the country and Odetta used to play there regularly so it feels amazing to do her music there."
