Rock On! This Week

"Let's start with the new poetry book, "Sometimes It's Heaven: Poems of Love, Loss and Redemption," laughed a fabulous sounding Judy Collins. "The new album I'm doing is an album of duets and there are some wonderful features, one of which is a song of David Crosby's called, "Radio" which is a duet with me and Graham (Nash) on a song of David Crosby's. That's one of our starters and then we're doing "Dreamers" as a big choral piece and Michael McDonald songs with me and so on; it's going to be out probably sometime in April. My book of poetry which is called, "Sometimes It's Heaven" is coming out on March 28 and it's a book of 100 poems that I wrote at the behest of my husband a few years ago and they formed this poetry book."

Judith Marjorie "Judy" Collins, has released close to 40 studio albums, multiple live, compilation and Christmas albums, more than 20 singles and authored many books over the span of her incredible and illustrious career and at the age of 85, shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.

Yes, the woman who recorded songs such as "Hard Lovin' Loser," "Both Sides Now," "Send In The Clowns" and so many more is back on the road beginning February 2 in Texas and is currently scheduled to culminate this run on April 8 in Colorado with stops in Florida, North Carolina, Nashville and New York here on the East Coast in between.

Recently, Collins took the time to discuss her book, her thoughts on "Interpretation," of her songs and poems, her concerts, cell phone policies, audiences and more.

"It's a good title, it's poetry about my life which means it deals with personal things with observations with a kind of a lyric that I can sometimes turn into a poem," she began as she discussed her new book. "So, it's about my life, it's almost as if it's a journal in a way; you know? There is the aspect of this poetry book that has to do with many of my experiences and much has happened; in a way, it's autobiographical."

"Everything is always open to interpretation," she continued with a loud laugh. "Life itself is open to interpretation. So, anybody who gets their hands on what you're doing will have some kind of personal response to it that has to do with their lives. It takes me back to the fact of what I do. I do about 100 shows a year and have for a long time and of course with travel, that makes it even more time that I'm out on the road but I love it and I'm devoted to it. What happens on stage when I'm singing, this period of an hour-and-a-half, which is about what my concerts run, an hour-and-a-half of singing and talking and during this time, I am in a dream state. I am doing the things that I have to do. I tell the stories, the jokes, I reminisce, I sing the songs and the people who are listening to me have a chance to be attentive. They can't use their phones, can't talk to their friends, they can't socialize or get up and go out of the theater; they are captive in a way and they have an opportunity to meditate, dwell on things they might have thought they should think about that are happening next week or next year or last year and it's a meditative state really for both of us, all of us and I think that is where the interpretation comes in; I think people are listening with their own experience in mind. People are not allowed to use cameras or telephones at my shows and if they do sneak it they should feel guilty and go home with a guilty conscience (Laughs). Otherwise, basically it doesn't happen and so, it is that space, which is so rare in our lives where we're not on our phones, including myself. It is a rare and a very important piece of mental health, I believe. So, it contributes to the mental health of my audience."

Sometimes surprises come when least expected, such is the case with a certain photograph that adorns the back cover of the recent book.

"The publisher of my book, Andrews McNeil, which I'm told is one of the best publishers in the country, they have put together a post card which has a picture of me at the age of 13 standing in my white organdie dress in front of the orchestra in Denver where I was playing a Mozart concerto with another young pianist and on the back is a poem for Tennessee Williams called, "Singing Like The Dead." They did a beautiful job; they don't usually put photographs on their covers but they were very taken, as I was with this photograph which showed up, I think in the middle of one of my concerts. We found it, it wasn't perfect and they wanted to have a better version of it so it would be more easily printed but finally, they just bowed their heads and said, "OK, we'll take it" and that's why it's on the back cover and in the book. I had it somewhere in my archives and one day it just fell out and appeared, we got it over to McNeil and then we never saw it again (laughs)."

Rock On! This Week

"Sometimes It's Heaven: Poems of Love, Loss and Redemption," is due to hit bookstores and retailers on March 25 and she plans on making this a "Combo" tour, once again, highlighting her seemingly endless enthusiasm for the road.

"I'll have a book tour with this in conjunction with my singing tour and I've also done an audio version so that will be coming out too; I'm always busy. I'm always all over the place. I've been on tour all of my life, that's what I do, I do about 100 shows a year," she quickly re-emphasized.

Doing 100 shows a year allows for ample interaction with her audiences and fan base and when asked if said interaction in the form of meet and greets or VIP events is the best part of what she does; her reaction was straight and to the point.

"No, no, it is "The part" of what I do, it's not the best part, the singing, the work is the best part. You meet people and sometimes it's very lovely and sometimes you don't know who they are and sometimes it's perfect and sometimes it's an interference with the fact that you have to get to the hotel, get some sleep and get up at four in the morning (Laughs). So, I'd say it's not my favorite part but it's important and when I can do so, I do."

Her February 22 show at the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN will see her with friends Amanda Shires, Amy Speace and a host of others; her March 8 show in New York City at Town Hall has her being joined by Richard Thompson, Paula Cole and Justin Vivian Bond and to see where Judy will be and/or purchase tickets to a show, please visit https://www.judycollins.com/#home-section

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
