"We're not new but it's new for me," laughed the artist known as "Slaw" as he discussed his debut release, "Here I Come," Nashville, songwriting and much more.
Proving at the age of 55 that it's never too late to start something new, Slaw, aka Scott Colson has turned a "Hobby" into a passion and has done so in a big way; via Nashville, Tennessee.
"I've been playing music my whole life but really just kind of recorded this single album a couple of years ago; first time I've ever really done it in earnest and put everything I had into it. I kind of wrapped up my other career, sold my business about a year-and-a-half ago and so, I'm in a place now where I'm able to kind of actually pursue it in earnest; so here I am. You know, pretty standard trajectory," he explained with a laugh."I always did it as a hobby, I've always loved music but I never saw it as a career; I always envisioned myself going the business route. I've always been an entrepreneur, started and failed in a lot of businesses and so forth but finally got it right at the end of the day. I've always played music and played in bands and had a great time with it but I'd never really created something from me and this was the opportunity to do that and yeah, that's where we are."
Slaw's sound has been called, "Soulful" with "Gritty vocals" that "Combine the smokiness of Otis Redding with the country twang of Darius Rucker" and keeping that in mind; how does he come up with a name like Slaw? Which some may feel possibly fits a metal band more accurately.

"Slaw, well, it's not a band, it's me," he said with a chuckle. "I've been in bands my whole life and for me, getting to this point and doing something like this, to do your own album and have "Control" over everything for lack of a better word, for good or bad; it's kinda gotta be you and not a band if you will. So, I decided to do this solo and "Slaw," my name is Scott Colson and so my friends would call me Colson and then they thought it was funny and it went from Colson to Coleslaw pretty quickly and then the lazy ones went, "Slaw, hey Slaw" so, Slaw has been a nickname I've had for a quite while; the one word name worked for Sting, Prince and Bono so; why not me (laughs)? An interesting story though, when I was letting friends and family know that I was doing this under Slaw, my aunt, who I hadn't talked to in forever said, "Hey, it's funny about this Slaw thing. Casey, your cousin, was also called Slaw in high school." So, I guess his friends also made the same stupid progression, it's kind of funny."
Every artist and/or songwriter has their own methods when constructing their material and as much as everyone is different, there are also similarities. So, it all comes down to personal preference.
"As a musician, I've always been vocals first; I've always been the lead singer in every band I've played in. I play guitar and harmonica but I guess in terms of writing music, I always really start with the vocals, the leads, the hooks, the melodies and kind of back it in from there. Generally speaking, as you know, songs come from everywhere but that's generally where I come from. I always hear the vocals, the front of the songs and I back it in from there."
"That app, the voice recorder thing, that was a game changer for me," he went on, "Used to be, you'd come up with some little diddy and the next day you lost it. So, I went through a very creative stretch about three or four years ago and I was working too at the time. I'd be on the road and driving somewhere between meetings and humming something and something would come to me and I'd grab the recorder and hum the line and when I'd get back to my home studio a couple of days later, I'd work it out from there. So, that's kind of typically how it starts with me; just kind of a cool part, cool melody or cool hook on a line and then I will typically go back and build it out from there. I've also written songs where it's like a chord progression and then sing on top of that but it's always just some cool part that comes up and then I build it out from there. I don't typically go, I need to write "A" song, that's not the way it goes for me. I don't know how others do it but It kind of starts with a cool part either vocally or a cool chord progression and I build it out from there."
"Vocal melodies, hooks, chord progressions" are all instrumental in song construction but what about the importance of lyrics?
"Lyrics? It's interesting, they used to not be very important at all," he said, once again with a laugh. "I used to have deep arguments with friends in college who were like, "Dude!" I mean, night long, drunk arguments like, "Hey man, it's about how it sounds" and they'd be like, "No man, it's about the lyrics, they mean something" so, I would tell you, I used to say, I don't care what the song means because there are a lot of songs I love that I really don't know what they mean but at the same time, if you get the lyrics right; to me, there is kind of three parts to a song. There's the vocals, the melody of the song, then there is the music behind it and then there is the meaning of the song and I think, when you get them all together and get them all just right, that's when you have something special. When you can combine all three; you can get moved by all three or one of those three but if you get all of the above, you've probably got something really special."
When you're on the other side of 50, most are looking to wind down as they can see retirement appearing on the horizon but when you're a musician, entertainer or anything in the arts, many times, the rules don't apply and Slaw; well, he is embracing this new adventure with zest.

"Here I Come" is the title and one of the singles I've released. "Here I Come," if you listen to the song, it's really about hanging in there when things go bad, it's about grit and determination and when your time comes; go for it! I guess the double meaning of it could be, "Here I Come," it's my first album at age 55; so it has kind of a double meaning to it. Having never done this before, I sought out Erin Anderson out of Nashville and I had started talking to her about three or four years ago and I sent her a bunch of demos and I said, "Hey, I'm looking to get into this as a solo artist" and she said, "Sounds good but the first step; let's get the album recorded" and so, I took the demos and started looking for a producer I could work with up in Nashville. I found Shawn Byrne and I feel like I just really got lucky. I talked to a few others but he and I really hit it off personally and musically, I was really impressed by what he was doing and I'd heard good things from other folks. I took all of my demos up there, we basically agreed on the tempos for all of them, laid them out, he did a basic guitar track; he's also an amazing guitar player. We laid them out and I did all of the vocals and then we started layering other instruments. There are strings on there, which I've always loved, he did the guitar and then he brought in a cellist, Brian Sutherland, who is amazing and will be playing live shows with me. He brought in Andrea Young, a violin player who played some amazing fiddle parts; I tried to get her to come play with me but I think she's touring with Rod Stewart now; amazingly, she opted for Rod instead of me (Laughs). The amazing thing; I know you're in New Jersey and don't know if you know much about Nashville but it's an amazingly little, close knit community there. There are these amazingly talented musicians and Shawn is just well-connected and brought in some amazing folks to come in and play and sing on the record. Musically, the session musicians; I don't think there is a stronger place on the planet."
While viewing this as his time to, "Go for it," he spent the time making the record in Nashville as well as also performing in "Music City" but he at first hesitated, then conceded that it is at times a struggle to separate oneself from all of the other talented people who flock there.
"There are so many talented artists; it's kind of like a double-edged sword," he said with some trepidation. "There are so many talented artists, it's hard but if you're talented, you've kind of got to go there because that's probably where the opportunity is for you to play and get on records and so forth but at the same time, there is a ton of competition there; it's just loaded with massive amounts of talent. So, yeah, if you want to stand out, it's not easy but that's where it's happening."
Now after "Here I Come" was released back in the beginning of November, Slaw has plans to branch out a bit as he begins to do shows in support of the record.
"I think I mentioned earlier, I hadn't played a note in a couple of years when we decided to release this album. So, I've been rehearsing with a new band I put together, like I said, I've got a couple of folks who play with me played on it and we had an album release party in November and we are playing gigs beyond that; some interesting, quality gigs outside of Nashville to your point and so, we are looking forward to getting out and playing live."
