"Yes, November 1," began violinist Ginny Luke as she discussed her new solo vocal album, "Devil At My Heels." "I did my first single at 14 years old, a girl group, two albums at 15 and 17 years old and then I played on a bunch of other artists' records from age 17 on and that takes a lot of time to work with other artists, fulfill their visions and record their music. Then I put my own EP out at age 21 and then continued putting singles out and as you probably know, we're in a singles driven market. So, for the last six years, I just kept putting singles out and working with major artists and now, finally, the time has come for my own album and I'm really excited. I think it was just the timing and the label schedule after the pandemic."

Luke, a longtime supporting player who has toured and/or recorded with acts such as Snoop Dogg, Foo Fighters, Finneas, Nicki Minaj and more has finally now, "Stepped out of the background" and released her own solo record but to understand Luke's talent, one must understand her journey.

"Yeah, I'm from Dubuque Iowa," she said with a chuckle. "I moved to L.A. when I was 14 and about to turn 15 years old; very early. My brother was my guardian, he is 10 years older than me and homeschooled and then my parents would come out sometimes. I was also roommates with two actor friends whose parents would be guardians sometimes. My parents were really supportive, they had me to map it out. I was in charge of where we were gonna live, the apartment housing situation, applying for the apartment, doing all of the paperwork, all the flights at an early age to make it happen. They said, "If you can organize it, we will support you for that time" and that was really an amazing gift that my parents offered up until the age of 18; I did work as well. I taught dance, I did gigs on violin early on in my teen years to supplement the cost of it because it's not cheap to live in L.A. I started playing violin when I was three; I started violin and piano in Germany. My dad was an Army Captain and a physician and so, we were on an Army base."

Many things come to mind when one reads or hears a story like that; many creatives would love to have had that freedom as a teen but L.A. is a far cry from Iowa; how did a young lady such as herself go from a relative unknown to recording and playing with some of music's biggest acts?

"I played violin for different producers at a young age and I met other great musicians. I did a lot of jams back then. I would go to these different jams around L.A. like The Viper Room, Whisky a Go Go, State Social House; all of these different jams that happened in different styles. I just fearlessly put myself out there and played and sang and I met producers that way and then the producers would call me for a session and they would tell other producers and the more names I played for, the more I got called; it was just kind of a natural progression." 

One has to admire her courage, tenacity and for lack of a better term, guts; traits which have served her well. Luke says the new record and her trek to its release are reflected in the songs and its title.

"Devil At My Heels;"  she started slowly, "There are two different meanings the listener can take from the title. One is the clear love interest topic love influence in the song, "Devil At My Heels," the big single from the album and the other is the meaning of sin, lust, temptation; all of the things running at your heels that you're either running away from or that will catch up to you. I think there is an element of fantasy, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll in rock that has always been there which makes it exciting and appealing and then I've had my own personal highs and lows in the music industry, in the touring world and working for all of these different artists that I've played for and recorded for and so, I think it shows up a lot. I think it's the process of rebelling through my 20s and finding myself and I think it's a fun and cool way that I hope other people connect with."

Pianists, violinists and many string players have a background in Classical music or began their training as such and Luke is no exception but she does say that it remains prevalent in her music and playing today. 

"Yes, totally. I started with classical music, specifically The Suzuki Method at age three and I studied with a master teacher named Doris Preucil once we moved to Iowa. My upbringing was very strict, it was very military and I practiced a minimum of two to eight hours per day growing up. I continue with my classical technique stuff now but it was around my teen years where I got to start branching into other styles. I continued classical all through my late teens and early 20s and my studies in college; occasionally I still get hired for a classical gig here and there but I like to apply classical technique to rock and what I'm doing. There is a song called "Burn" on the record which is a Deep Purple cover and you can hear a direct neoclassical influence from the original guitarist Richie Blackmore. There are a lot of these passages that kind of make sense; a guitar and violin crossover; it fits really well musically. Growing up, I listened to Classical and Jazz but my brother Jesse, who is a cello and bass player, really exposed me to classic rock for the first time at like age seven and nine. All of these different records; Zeppelin,  Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and that opened up a new world for me and got me really excited about what other music was out there. Then when I worked for Meat Loaf at 19 and recorded for him and then toured, I also was exposed to a bunch of new music and now in my life, I listen to everything from Rock to Metal, Fusion, R & B; I love most styles. I love learning and evolving as a musician and so I'm really open minded now and I like to continue growing as a musician."

"Stylistically? Huh," she continued as she delved into her songwriting style and that classical background. "I think I just go for what's the most honest and truthful. I definitely like distortion on the violin and overdrive and effects and that often translates to rock or like a fusion sound; electric string music. I love a great song, I love songs that reach as many people as possible and I think the musical ideas need to serve the song. So, I don't limit or think, I'm gonna specifically make a rock song today or a pop song today. I usually just start writing a song and then producing the song and then it becomes evident what style fits each song the best. We recorded the album in North Hollywood at Dave's Room, which is a studio that is fantastic for drum tones and we did overdubs at Studio City Sound in Studio City, California. I have a fantastic guitar player, Orianthi, who played guitar for Michael Jackson; she was kind enough to lend her incredible talent to the title track, "Devil at My Heels" and she just has an amazing blues tone and just a presence on the record. The other guest is guitar virtuoso Nili Brosh who played on "Burn," the Deep Purple cover. Nili is a fantastic guitar player; she's known for playing with Danny Elfman and other high level rock acts and it was so cool working with her; she just laid down an incredible solo on that song."

Leaving home at such a young age and moving to a city that can be dangerous in a line of work known for its smarmy venues, managers, drug, alcohol and sex culture as well as misogynistic attitudes; was it an issue at all for her and how did Ginny handle it?

"Yes, I think you'll hear a lot of women have gone through that," she said with a deep breath. "There are so many challenges; nuances, interactions, all the way up to straight up getting paid less or having worse conditions, being asked to do more, being excluded from conversations and situations, being manipulated. So, yeah, there are so many experiences and my goal in making this record is to take up space and make my voice heard and make other women and marginalized groups of people feel powerful; make everyone feel powerful so that honestly, so we can have a better music industry and better culture. The more we talk about it, the more we can move culture forward so, I love that you brought this question up. I try to talk about this in an uplifting way that has the possibility for change. That's my biggest goal, to be a leader in a forward movement in the music industry."

With the release of "Devil At My Heels" on November 1, Luke says she's just getting started.

"We had the L.A. release event at The Recording Club, we went to New York for a studio listening event and a gig, Vegas, Minneapolis and we are working on more performance dates."
