"I'm really pleased, my music director, Alan Hewitt, he was with me in TheMoody Blues for 15 years, my drummer, Billy Ashbaugh, was with Justin Timberlake of NSYNC and he was with me in the Moody Blues as well and I've got Jon Davison from YES joining me on the road and my album as well. So, yeah, great time, great bunch of friends and musicians which is incredible."
John Lodge, bassist, vocalist, composer, legend and member of one of the greatest rock bands ever assembled, The Moody Blues is at it again with an "What's old is new again" approach which will be on full display Friday November 15 at The Bergen Performing Arts Center as he revisits his "Days of Future Passed" with a "New" release; "Days of Future Passed: My Sojourn,"
"I'm really looking forward to bringing "Days of Future Passed" to the stage," he began with youthful enthusiasm. "I wanted to bring the album to a new generation and to people who didn't know "Days of Future Passed;" they may have heard of "Nights In White Satin" but didn't know about "Days of Future Passed" and I thought it'd be great to perform it live on stage. So, I set about performing it live on stage and realized that we should record this album because I realized the more I got into the album, it was completing the circle for me. "Days of Future Passed" was my life encapsulated in that album. I realized that so many lives are encapsulated in that album and that's what really gave me the impetus to make that album and bring it to a new generation of vinyl purchasers especially when you've got incredible sound systems. Vinyl records with a sleeve where you can read on the back who played on it, the publishers of the music and all the things you'd like to know about a record; well, all the things that I used to want to know about a record."

Yes, "Life," as he says, has a funny way of twisting and turning but yet depositing us where we are supposed to be; be it by plan or perhaps by fate. Lodge says he never thought about fame and/or fortune but he's quite glad how things all worked out.
"I don't know why I wanted to do it (Play music), all I know is I wanted to; I wanted to be part of rock 'n' roll. When I used to go to cafe` at my school at lunchtime, they had a jukebox in there, a Rock-ola Jukebox and instead of spending my lunch money on lunch, I used to put it down that slot machine and listen to music. I listened to people like Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard; endless rock'n' roll. That was the heartbeat for me and it was fantastic and I wanted to be part of it, I really wanted to be part of it and not for fame; I honestly never thought about that but there was something about the vibe of music that was inside of me. So, I bought a guitar, or should I say my mother bought it for about five dollars, an acoustic guitar with steel strings. I spent about 24 hours a day in my bedroom trying to work out how this thing worked. I started learning all of the lectern piano from these rock'n' roll greats and I realized that really was the heartbeat of rock 'n' roll and that was something special that always brought joy to me and my guitar was always my best friend. I don't really look back but if I had to say one word, it would probably be P H E W, phew (laughs)."
"Days of Future Passed" was such an incredible record and one that has certainly withstood time's test but many may not realize that the band never officially toured in support of that release and in part, that factored into Lodge's decision to bring it to audiences now.
"I had thought about it because I've wanted to perform it live on stage. We had recorded a concert with an orchestra with the Moodies but we never went on tour for "Days of Future Passed" and I think it's a shame because so many people wanted to hear "Days of Future Passed." I was thinking about it and I wondered if I could actually do it myself. So, I had a meeting with my music guy, Alan Hewitt and we discussed it for ages and we realized that we could actually do it. So, we went into rehearsals for about a year and while we were rehearsing and doing practice concerts, my daughter, who manages me, said to me, " You know, you should record that dad because it sounds so good and so many young people don't know about "Days of Future Passed." You'll re-introduce them to "Days of Future Passed" in 2024 and perhaps they will go back to 1967 and listen to the original as well." So, that's how it all came about."
Moody Blues fans old, new or soon to be will receive far more than their monies worth as this is a show for the ages; all ages.
"The show is in two halves," he explained. "The first half is all classic Moody Blues songs and I dedicate one of the songs to Ray Thomas to keep Ray's music alive which is "Legend Of A Mind (Timothy Leary's Dead)" and the second half of the show is "Days of Future Passed" complete; the whole album with a guest appearance from Jon Davison of YES. I've got a video recording of Graeme Edge reciting his beautiful rock 'n' roll poetry from "Days of Future Passed;" "Breathe deep the gathering gloom..." and it's beautiful and it stops me on stage when Graeme lights up the stage on the video. Graeme excelled and it was beautiful having him in the studio recording his poetry."
The involvement and revival of original drummer and founding Moody Blues member Edge was rather paramount to Lodge as this project began coming into focus.

"I'm performing "Days of Future Passed" in its entirety. When I was planning this whole project, I went to see Graeme Edge and I said, "Would you re-record or record your poetry from "Days of Future Passed" please?" He said, "John, I'd love to do that; I barely record my poetry and it's fantastic keeping Moody Blues music alive" and I said, "You'll always have a place on stage with me" and I recorded him reciting his poetry, filmed him and so, he has a special place on stage when the video lights up."
As mentioned earlier, The Moody Blues worked with an orchestra in the past; will we see anything close to that with this production and how did he assemble the players for this tour?
"I don't have an orchestra but I really have everything covered," he said, "I've got a beautiful cellist named Jason Charboneau who plays an incredible cello and he's got a box of tricks he uses as well. My guitarist, Duffy King also incorporates orchestral sounds on his guitar as well, so we've got everything covered. The first part of the concert is sort of classic Moody Blues songs. One of the songs of course is in honor of Ray Thomas; keeping Ray's music alive within the Moody Blues as well. So, it's two parts; it's the history of the Moodies and "The Days of Future Passed" as well."
"It really all came;" he continued, "The core of this band was the heartbeat really of the Moody Blues. Having the drummer, Billy Ashbaugh and of course Alan Hewitt, my keyboard and musical director with me; they knew what I was trying to do and they loved the music. So, between them, they suggested different people and I listened to them and we chose Duffy King the guitarist from Detroit and Jason Charboneau; I always wanted a cellist in the band or to work with a cello because I love cellos. I wanted a cello that wasn't just inside the band, I wanted a cello to make a statement so that it was really part of the energy in my band and it really just worked. Jason Charboneau rehearses all day long of the concerts and is a beautiful performer and his sound is exactly what I wanted."
When asked if he ever imagined "Days of Future Passed" to have the impact it had and still continues to have; he couldn't help but laugh.
"It fascinates me to be honest; we were so young and we took the bull by the horns really. I think with youth comes experimentation and we knew no boundaries. I remember the technicians at Decca Records; not the in-studio technicians but the technicians behind how everything worked; they used to say, "Don't forget, when you record an album, you want it to last at least 20 years; be proud of it after 20 years." I didn't think they met 50 odd years (Laughs), I'm really glad we listened to those guys."
"Days of Future Passed: My Sojourn" is distributed by Deko Entertainment and can be found at dekoentertainment.com or by going to Lodge's website https://johnlodge.com/ and either one pleases John who was introduced to Deko by a friend in the radio biz.
"Lee Abrams, I know Lee really well and he said, "John, have you ever worked with Charlie Calv and Bruce at Deko? I think they'd be a great fit for you." and yeah, I'm really pleased."
