(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ) -- The South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) has announced the temporary closure of its movie theater, previously operated by an independent entity leasing space within the center. This transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for SOPAC, as plans are underway to introduce a revitalized cinematic experience for the community. The previous tenant has vacated the theater space, and SOPAC is actively seeking a new operator to reimagine and relaunch the movie theater experience; however, there is currently no confirmed timeline.
Importantly, this change pertains solely to the movie theater component. SOPAC remains fully committed to its mission of delivering outstanding live performances, educational initiatives, and community events. All SOPAC programming will proceed without interruption.
"We view this transition as a tremendous opportunity to reimagine the cinematic offerings at SOPAC," said Aida Jones, Chair of the SOPAC Board of Governors. "Our goal is to create an enhanced movie-going experience that complements our diverse array of live performances and educational programs."
Executive Director Lana Rogachevskaya added, "Cinema has always been a powerful way to connect and uplift our community through shared storytelling experiences. We believe in preserving this cultural resource for South Orange and surrounding areas. We look forward to the possibilities that lie ahead."
Mayor Sheena Collum expressed her optimism about the future of SOPAC, stating: "SOPAC has long been a cultural cornerstone of South Orange. While changes like these are part of any organization's evolution, I'm confident that SOPAC will continue to thrive and serve as a hub for arts and entertainment in our community."
SOPAC is actively exploring innovative concepts and partnerships to bring a fresh and engaging movie theater experience to South Orange. They are committed to keeping the community informed as we develop plans over the coming months. For more information and updates, please visit www.sopacnow.org

The Seton Hall University Arts Council presents a diverse range of events at SOPAC with seasoned professionals, students, and faculty.
Nearly ten years in the making, SOPAC first opened its doors in 2006. South Orange Village Trustees, in partnership with Seton Hall University, envisioned SOPAC as the center of an ambitious redevelopment plan. Through visionary leadership and an unwavering commitment, SOPAC has become a cultural centerpiece for the region, an economic driver for the community, and a catalyst for artistic opportunity.
