Newton Theatre presents The Last Waltz featuring The THE BAND Band

originally published: 03/05/2025

(NEWTON, NJ) -- On Friday, May 16, 2025, The Newton Theatre hosts The Last Waltz Celebration featuring The THE BAND Band and special guests.  The night brings to life one of the most historic concerts of the rock era.  Doors are at 7:00pm, showtime is 8:00pm.

On Thanksgiving Day in 1976, concertgoers packed San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom to witness The Last Waltz - the final performance of The Band’s legendary 16-year career. The farewell party they hosted that Thanksgiving night featured a who’s who of rock royalty from Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Eric Clapton to Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Ronnie Hawkins. The THE BAND Band recreates the music and the magic of that Thanksgiving evening with The Last Waltz Celebration, performing The Band's most beloved songs and enlisting a dozen guest musicians to the cover numerous artists and songs featured in the original concert. The lineup includes fiddle player Larry Packer, who played with The Band at the original concert in 1976.

The event was later immortalized in Martin Scorsese’s landmark film, “The Last Waltz.” Gary Solomon, co-founder of The THE BAND Band, happened to be in the audience that night. Decades later he and a large cast of musician friends recreate that magical evening in theaters around the country. "I was so blown away by the experience of being at The Last Waltz, I wanted to tell the whole world about it" he says. "I guess I still do."

Tickets range from $39-$59 and are available for purchase online starting Friday, March 7 at 10:00am. The Newton Theatre is located at 234 Spring Street in Newton, New Jersey.

From Woodstock to The Last Waltz, The Band has been a central figure in some of rock and roll’s most iconic moments. Now, over half a century after the release of their debut album Music From Big Pink, the music they created has proven to be timeless. Their pioneering blend of country, blues, rock, and folk music served as a template for what we now call Americana.
