RVCC's Institute of Holocaust & Genocide Studies presents "Anne Frank in Translation"

originally published: 01/02/2025

(BRANCHBURG, NJ) -- School and community groups are invited to view a new exhibition, Anne Frank in Translation, on display January 6-May 15, 2025 at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg. The eight-panel exhibition, presented by the Institute of Holocaust & Genocide Studies at RVCC, highlights Anne Frank’s enduring legacy and her role as a powerful symbol of the Holocaust.

Anne Frank in Translation illuminates the process of Holocaust commemoration and the role played by editors, publishers, translators, playwrights, curators, composers, and performers through the preservation and publication of Anne Frank’s story as shared in her well-known diary. The traveling exhibit is paired with copies of the diary printed in multiple languages, including Spanish, Dutch, Hindi, Farsi, Hebrew, Korean, and French.

Anne Frank’s status as an icon of Holocaust history and literature was not inevitable. Instead, it represents a complex interplay between her story’s resonance for people worldwide and the abiding efforts of individuals—family members, protectors, publishers, curators, composers, artists, and educators—to translate her story from context to context and generation to generation.

The exhibition will feature a virtual opening with Adina Langer on Friday, January 17, at 10:00am. Langer, Senior Curator for Museums, Archives, and Rare Books at Kennesaw State University, will discuss the ideas of translation and transformation that animate the Anne Frank in Translation exhibition. Community members in grades 8 and older are invited to attend the virtual opening. There is no fee to attend, but registration is required. To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/4t65k89d.

A sketchbook, like a diary, is personal. It is usually not planned for public consumption. It's where the maker first brings to light ideas that come from deep inside. The self-edit function, the perfectionist, is turned off.
