The National Association of Women Artists (NAWA), founded in 1889, stands as the first women’s professional art organization established in the United States. Five pioneering women who sought to address the isolation experi- enced within the art community and the lack of opportunities for women artists founded NAWA. In response to the male-dominated environment that barred women from participating in many life drawing and anatomy classes, gaining governing positions, and exhibiting their art, NAWA emerged as a vital alternative. By providing a support- ive network and avenues for exhibition, NAWA challenged these barriers, paving the way for greater inclusion and recognition of women artists in the art world. Despite progress over the past century, women artists still face under- representation in galleries, museums, and art historical discourse. NAWA remains vital and committed to its founding mission, recognizing that the fight for equal representation and recognition of women in the arts is ongoing and as crucial as ever.
NAWA continues to provide exhibition opportunities throughout the year and promotes culture through events, education, scholarships & awards. Archived in over ten high-profile institutions, The NAWA Catalog is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Library of Congress, and more. Additionally, The Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, holds a permanent collection of NAWA art, underscoring the organization’s significant impact on American art history.
