Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum Cultivates Community with its Harvest Home Dinner on Saturday

originally published: 11/14/2024

(SKILLMAN, NJ) -- Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) is pleased to announce its inaugural Harvest Home Dinner, a fundraising event honoring the farming roots of the Stoutsburg Sourland community. This event will take place at the historic Reasoner/True House on Saturday, November, 16 2024 from 5:00-8:00pm.

SSAAM is Central New Jersey's only museum telling the rich local and regional stories of African Americans from the time of the transatlantic slave trade to the present day. With the support of the Preserving Black Churches grant we are honored to continue this work with this latest event which will feature locally-sourced dishes, live music, and powerful storytelling from descendants of the True family and Mt. Zion AME Church members. Cofounder and Historian Elaine Buck shares that “Harvest Home Dinner has been happening in the Sourland region for over 100 years”, as indicated in a news clipping dating from the early 1900’s from the SSAAM archives.

This month, SSAAM celebrates the 125th anniversary of Mt. Zion AME Church in Skillman, NJ. Join us for a special Harvest Home Dinner, honoring African American faith and culture through a toast, a three-course meal, and reflections on faith, food, family, and fortitude. Let's come together to celebrate and invest in our shared history and community.

SSAAM Harvest Home Dinner takes place on Saturday, November 16 at Historic Reasoner/True House (183 Hollow Road) in Skillman, New Jersey from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.  Tickets are $50 and available for purchase online.

This event is made possible by a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Preserving Black Churches. For more information about the event or to learn more about SSAAM, please visit SSAAMuseum.org.
