Julie Byrne Storm King Arts Center Concert Review

Serendipity ruled the day last week when my wife Irene Fizer spotted an upcoming outdoor concert taking place in the Hudson Valley,  featuring the singer-songwriter Julie Byrne and the harpist Mary Lattimore.  Irene and I had been planning to check out the event space–the Storm King Arts Center in New Windsor, New York–for quite a while, as we’ve passed the Center several times over the past few years, on our way to DIA-Beacon. So, we felt fortunate to secure two tickets a few days before the show, and we started to plan what to pack for our al fresco dinner.  Although we missed the chance to partake in the picnic specials offered by several food vendors at the Center that night, we filled our own picnic basket with some gluten-free treats, and then set out for an easy hour-and-20 minute drive north, from our home in New Jersey to the Hudson Valley.

Saxophonist Mindi Abair Blends Her Jazz with a Taste of Wine

Like a fine Cabernet Sauvignon, Mindi Adair's music is deep, layered, nuanced, earthy, and can be appreciated by both demanding critics and casual listeners. Comparing Adair's music to fine wine is no coincidence; wine has become a significant part of her life and livelihood. The Grammy-nominated saxophonist and singer will blend her jazz stylings with a love of wine on August 17, 2024 at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway, NJ.

New Release Review: "Kinds of Kindness"

Yorgos Lanthimos reunites with Efthimis Filippou, his regular screenwriter before his recent Tony McNamara collaborations, for Kinds of Kindness, an anthology film consisting of three tales, all of which feature the same recurring cast members. Part of the appeal of portmanteau films is that if you're not vibing with one story you know another will come along pretty soon. With each segment running close to an hour, that's not the case here. If the absurdist tone doesn't hook you from the start, you'll likely find Kinds of Kindness a test of your patience. But while it's exhausting and unwieldy in stretches, it's entertaining and amusing often enough to make it a worthwhile venture for those already onboard with Lanthimos.

Lucrecia

Lucrecia Pays Homage to Former Bergen County Resident and Reigning Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz

"Life is a carnival! It's much more beautiful to live it singing." If you're unfamiliar with my life's mantra, perhaps you’d recognize it if I were instead to say "la vida es un carnaval, es más bello vivir cantando."
