The BrassWorks Gallery presents "These Almost Lost Pieces"

originally published: 03/26/2024

(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- The BrassWorks Gallery presents the exhibition, "These Almost Lost Pieces," featuring the captivating works of visual artist, poet, and acclaimed author Nan Ring. Her multidimensional approach to art and storytelling allows visitors to engage with inspiring narratives and explore the complexities of the human experience. This immersive showcase invites art enthusiasts to delve into the multifaceted world of Nan Ring’s creative vision. The exhibition is on display from April 5 through August 16, 2024.

Nan Ring’s artistry transcends traditional boundaries, offering viewers a thoughful journey and exploration of the human condition. With a keen focus on ideas of vastness within intimate moments, the extraordinary with the everyday and mundane, Nan Ring’s work delves into recurring themes of feminism, ephemerality, and the domestic as a metaphor for home and country.

“Through my art and poetry, I address questions about the essence of human experience, inviting viewers to enter the work imaginatively and contemplate the beauty and complexity of life,” says Nan Ring. “These Almost Lost Pieces” is a deeply personal collection that reflects my ongoing exploration of artistic processes and materials, the relationship between written and visual language, especially poetry, an integral part of my exhibition, and the transient nature of existence.” With a career spanning decades, Nan Ring has garnered widespread acclaim for her thought-provoking creations. Her exploration of still life, figurative, performative and abstract art forms offers viewers a thoughtful journey into the realms of both literal and psychological interiors.

Nan Ring’s accolades include the Vermont Studio Center Artist’s Fellowship Award, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation/NEA Fellowship Award, and the New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowship Award. Her work has been showcased in national exhibitions at prestigious venues such as The Painting Center in NYC, Susan Eley Gallery in Hudson, NY, and the 14C Art Fair in New Jersey.

In addition to her visual artistry, Nan Ring is a published author, with her critically acclaimed memoir, “Walking On Walnuts” (Bantam, 1996), captivating readers with its poignant reflections on life and identity. Her poetry, featured in publications like Gray Sparrow Press and About Place Journal, offers a glimpse into the insightful depths of her creative spirit.

There will be an Opening Reception on Friday, April 5th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

The BrassWorks Gallery is located at 105 Grove Street in Montclair, New Jersey. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 7:00am – 7:00pm. BrassWorks, combines modern amenities with faithful restoration of the building’s original 1930’s architectural details. The site was for many years home to the family-owned George Rutledge Etched Brass Works company that manufactured brass-etched business signs and plaques, as well as artistic creations such as desk sets and etched portraits. Prior to its conversion into office space in 2006, the building functioned as a warehouse for auto parts. Today, the building is filled with a diverse group of high quality tenants and features an art gallery displaying the works of local artists.

"Open

"Open Book(s)" - Adventures on the wild frontier of bookmaking, and meaning-making, in the first floor galleries of Mana Contemporary

Books do not need to be beautiful objects to be cherished. Many indispensable books on my shelf were in poor condition when I brought them home from the shop. The publishers who put out the cheap yellow-page paperbacks that rocked my world and set my course when I was a child didn’t give much consideration to font, printing, or paper stock. All that mattered was readability. Could I open it fast, close it up quick, and chuck it in my bag when I was done? If anybody at the publishing company was making design decisions, those were their objectives. Any impediment to or distraction from the reading experience was unwelcome. They took it for granted that everything that mattered was inside the book.
