Luna Stage Announces 2024 Teen Summer Conservatory for Actors and Tech

originally published: 03/05/2024

(WEST ORANGE, NJ) -- Luna Stage's Teen Summer Conservatory for actors and theatre technicians age 12-17 returns for 2024, led by teaching artist Julia Murphy. The four-week summer intensive runs July 8-August 2, and will culminate in public performances on Luna’s MainStage the weekend of August 2-August 4.

The Summer Conservatory offers actors the opportunity to hone their craft through scenework, improvisation, text analysis, voice work, and movement training while rehearsing a scripted play. Technical theatre students will develop new skills in a supportive and creatively-charged environment, focusing both on process and on hands-on preparation for performance. All participants will build technique, collaborative skills, and artistic confidence, while developing a broad base of theater experience and knowledge.

A maximum of 12 actors will be accepted into the program, all of whom are guaranteed speaking roles with substantial featured dialogue. Up to 5 tech positions are available for students interested in stagecraft, directing, technical theatre, and stage management.

All participants are asked to participate in an audition or interview, in-person at Luna's theatre. Actors will be asked to share a short monologue of their choosing. Tech applicants will be invited to share about their experience and goals.

Auditions/interviews will be held at Luna Stage, 555 Valley Road in West Orange on Wednesday March 13 from 6:00pm-8:00pm and Saturday March 16 from 10:00am-12:00pm with other times available by request. To book an audition appointment, please email julia.murphy@lunastage.org. Admission to the program is rolling, and applications are open until all spots are filled.

Luna’s auditions are welcoming, supportive, and fun. Actors should prepare one minute of text: a monologue, poem or anything else they can theatricalize, and one minute of “something else”: sing a song, play an instrument, dance, or anything else with rhythm or movement. Technical theatre artists are encouraged to share a performance excerpt as well, but can also simply speak about what interests them about the program.

The Teen Summer Conservatory will run Monday-Friday from 10:00am-3:00pm and will culminate in performances on August 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. All Luna programs are offered on a sliding scale to support equity and access. Tuition for the Summer Conservatory ranges from $1600 to $3200, with additional tuition support available upon request.

Small

'Small' Brings Big Energy to George Street Playhouse

When thinking about occupations kids say they want when they get older, a list comes to mind – doctor, superhero, firefighter, etc. But not many would find their passion at the horse racing track and say they want to become a jockey. In "Small," an autobiographical play written and performed by Robert "Bobby" Montano, the story follows Montano as he races and fulfills his dream on the horse racing tracks of Long Island, New York. It does not stop there, however. The 90-minute play is a story of love, loss and more as Montano grapples with some difficult life decisions.
