PHOTOS from "Real Women Have Curves" at Dragonfly

(PLAINFIELD, NJ) -- Dragonfly Multicultural Arts Center is presenting Real Women Have Curves from November 11-13 at duCret School of the Arts in Plainfield. The play by Josefina López, dramatizes—in a comedy—the struggles of five Mexican immigrants working in a tiny sewing factory in East LA.  Photographer John Posada was on hand to take photos.

The struggle of immigrants is as relevant today as it has always been. Families come to the US for a better life but encounter great challenges as they work to make a home and one day earn their green cards.

Dragonfly, a nonprofit theatre company dedicated to diverse stories and casts, is presenting Real Women Have Curves as the first play of its 2022-23 season. This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Plainfield Foundation. Real Women Have Curves is a part of Dragonfly’s efforts to present plays that examine the lives of the diverse groups that make up our world.

Real Women Have Curves is the outrageously funny story of five Mexican American women who are racing to meet nearly impossible production deadlines to keep their tiny dress factory from going under. And while they work, hiding from the INS, they talk about their husbands and lovers, their children, and their dreams for the future. Real Women is based on the playwright’s life and was made into a celebrated film starring America Ferrera.

Real Women Have Curves is directed by Catherine LaMoreaux and Julia Stibich. It is stage managed by Jada Davis and Production Managed by Aidan O’Rourke. The play stars Carla Breton, Kat Lowdon, Esperanza Pacheco, Jimena Torres, and Annick Vasquez.
