Burgers for Ballfields

originally published: 09/27/2022

(SOUTH JERSEY) -- Marcello De Fao, the chef/owner of The Fare Porter (109 Kings Highway East in Haddonfield) and Dane DeMarco, the chef/owner of Burgertime (123 West Merchant Street in Audobon) have decided to team up to host a friendly burger contest in South Jersey, with funds raised going towards the parcs & recreation departments for the respective communities where each restaurant is located.

Throughout the month of October, beginning on Sunday, October 1, and going through Halloween, whichever business sells more burgers will take 75 percent of the proceeds raised, and donate them to their town’s parks & rec department to pay for baseball field upkeep, renovations, construction, and other necessary improvements.

“There are no losers here,” said De Fao. “Everybody wins. Dane will sell some delicious burgers, as will we, and at the end of the month, all of the money raised will go to a worthy cause. The only difference is which neighborhood benefits more. Burgertime has been so incredibly popular since opening, as you never stop hearing about their burgers, and I wanted to do something fun with Dane that would benefit the community. This is also a great opportunity for both of us to introduce a couple of new, really special burgers for our customers.”

The Fare Porter’s burger is called “Tallow, is it Me You’re Looking For?” and it features wagyu tallow, shaved Brussels sprouts, Abruzze Jawn cheese from Cherry Grove Farm, Fishtown Pickle Project sweet onion pickles, and Maldon Sea Salt on a Le Bus brioche bun. The Burgertime burger, titled “The Green Wave Burger,” includes a six-ounce beef patty with cheddar and Monterey jack cheeses, green chili relish with chilies from Viereck Farms, turmeric pickled onion, golden ranch, and salsa verde tortilla chips on a Liscio’s Bakery roll. Both burgers are priced at $14 apiece.

“I was thrilled when Marcello approached me with this idea,” said DeMarco. “Our township takes a lot of pride in its appearance, and I think raising money for the parks and fields can really benefit the community. I love some friendly competition where everyone comes out on top, and I’m really excited for the neighborhood’s response.”
