(NEWARK, NJ) -- New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), known for bringing world-class entertainment close to home, presents El Gran Combo on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 8:00pm, where they will celebrate 60 years of making music.
For six decades, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico has brought people together worldwide with their joyful brand of salsa music. And the charming performers of El Gran Combo are still as funny, flirty, and fabulous as ever. Don't miss this spectacular salsa party in celebration of their milestone anniversary. They'll be joined by special guests Latin pop heartthrob Luis Figueroa ("Hasta el Sol de Hoy") and Latin comedian Sara Conteras.
El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico or El Gran Combo is considered Puerto Rico's most successful salsa orchestra. They also received the moniker La Universidad de la Salsa (The University of Salsa) in Colombia due to the many famous salsa musicians and singers who developed their careers with the band.
The salsa orchestra was founded in 1962 by Rafael Ithier; Ithier is still the musical director and is the only remaining original member. As of 2010, Willie Sotelo, who joined the group in 2006 as a pianist, is the band's de facto musical director on tours. Ithier conducts the group and occasionally plays in select live performances. El Gran Combo is still actively performing after 60 years together.
