It’s A to Z: The Art of Arleen Schloss gets its Statewide Premiere at the New Jersey Film Festival

by Morgan Kalmbach
published 2025-01-15

Documentary filmmaking is incredibly unique in that it immerses not only the audience in its subject matter but also its filmmaker in the process of creating the film. From spending countless hours researching, compiling, and shooting interviews and creating an overall storyline, every step of the way, the filmmaker is involved and learning as the progression ensues. The challenge then becomes how much this filmmaker can include of their newly learned knowledge about the subject and what the best way to shed light on this subject that they have studied is. Stuart Ginsberg’s It’s A to Z: The Art of Arleen Schloss exemplifies this challenge and is greatly successful in how it was overcome. Although the film only runs for an hour, it encompasses decades of information surrounding Arleen Schloss, a notable multimedia artist in the New York City underground art scene in the 70s through the 90s.

Engaging shorts Disoriented and Dinner at Manny's are screening at the New Jersey Film Festival

by Yuri Kim
published 2025-01-22

“Is now a good time?” The question is usually asked when it never is. Disoriented is a short film that follows the stories of 3 different individuals, all of whom receive a phone call while in the middle of their day-to-day lives. The news they receive takes them out of their surroundings, wrapped up in the voice that is on the other line. What should they do? How should they act? It is up to each of them to decide how to respond - while stuck in a situation where they must present a different face outwards than the conflicting, whirling emotions that they feel inside.

Insightful documentary The Accidental Spy screens at the New Jersey Film Festival on February 1

by Yuri Kim
published 2025-01-23

“Did you ever think, Blerim, that you were going to be a spy?” “Never in my life.” “So you didn’t train to be a spy?” “No, never.” “So it was just by accident?” “By accident, yes.” These are the opening words of The Accidental Spy - a documentary directed by Oscar-nominated, double EMMY and triple BAFTA-winning director and producer Anthony Wonke. Wonke has extensive experience working in the Middle East, having made several films in and about the region such as Syria: Children on the Frontline (2014) and The Battle for Marjah (2010). You can see his extensive experience in the way he sets up Blerim Skoro’s story - the main figure behind The Accidental Spy.

Masterpiece feature Giant’s Kettle gets its statewide debut at the New Jersey Film Festival

by Yuri Kim
published 2025-01-21

Giant’s Kettle begins with a black screen, as howling winds are heard in the background. We rest with this image - we stay with this image. Slowly, a hand and a face eerily come out of the darkness, looking straight at us, the viewer. It’s a man. His forehead is bandaged. His expression is blank. He stares at us for an uncomfortably long period of time. We feel that he is trapped. We feel that he holds resentment, but also tiredness. He then finally breaks eye contact with us as he closes his eyes and smudges his face against the glass, breathing heavily.
