Turf Replacement Underway at Carteret’s Veterans Baseball Field and Mustillo Softball Field after Damage from Hurricane Ida

(CARTERET, NJ) -- Carteret Mayor Daniel J. Reiman announced on April 22, that Shaw Sports Turf has begun work to replace the synthetic turf on Veterans Baseball Field and Mustillo Softball Field at Civic Center Park on Pershing Avenue, which were damaged by Hurricane Ida in September 2021.

The fields were first installed in 2008 as part of Mayor Reiman’s Park and Open Space Civic Center Park rehabilitation project. As the damage to both fields was the result of a federally declared disaster, the Borough is working with FEMA to recoup costs related to the repairs.

“We will always fight tooth and nail with the federal government to get every dime we are entitled to for our residents, Borough facilities, and amenities,” said Mayor Reiman. “Hurricane Ida caused extensive flooding damage throughout Carteret so we have worked with FEMA since the day the storm came to make sure we receive our fair share.”

Hurricane Ida was a deadly and destructive Category 4 hurricane that swept across the United States, causing catastrophic flooding in the northeast. Ida was the fourth-costliest Atlantic Hurricane in U.S. history, having caused at least $75.25 billion in damages nationwide. 30 New Jersey residents were killed by flooding produced from the storm.

It will take approximately two weeks to complete the turf replacement process. Anticipated construction cost of the repairs is $525,000.
