Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...9/26/24

By Danny Coleman

"The Hard Line," on Alligator Records was my last album and it debuted at "Number One" on the Billboard Charts and it stayed up there for a while. Being with Alligator has been a game changer for me. My previous labels, VizzTone and Showplace were great but being with Alligator is a completely different ball game."

Chris O'Leary; Marine, law officer, father and one heck of a talented musician makes his way to The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton on Monday September 30 for what promises to be a great night of music and excellent musicianship.

Previously a front man and vocalist for the late Levon Helm's band The Barnburners, O'Leary has also performed with Jimmy Vivino, Dan Akroyd, Jeff Healy, Dave Edmunds and James Cotton to name a few and now that he is signed with Alligator Records, he could not be more enthusiastic about his future.

"Turns out there is a reason; other than the obvious that all of my heroes recorded on Alligator, there is a reason that I've always wanted to be on Alligator, it's the first real label that I've been on and I couldn't be happier," he began with obvious pleasure in his voice. "VizzTone was Bob Margolin, Muddy's old guitar player and "Rosy" Richard Rosenblatt who used to run Tone-Cool Records and it's more of a label group. You do all of the work, recording and everything and they help you distribute it at a small price; it was great for me when I came back into music. Rosy and Bob were really good to me because I had taken a long time off from the music scene and coming back, asking Bob; they did really well by me and I've never had anything bad to say about either one of those labels, VizzTone or Showplace, it's just that Alligator is a different animal."

"Came back into music," wait, why did he leave and how did he find his way to Alligator Records? Fortunately for him, he looks back and finds humor in the path he took to get there.

"I played with Levon and my voice quit; I had nodes," he began slowly. "I could've gotten surgery but there was no guarantee on that surgery and I didn't have insurance; I was a working musician. So, I took time off and life took over; six months became six years pretty quick and then I got back into it and during the interim, I got a job as a federal cop (laughs). I got out of the Marine Corps and there were only so many things I could do and that was one of them. So, for a while, I was balancing both careers. I got back into music, put the record out on VizzTone and it got a great reception, we got BMA nominations and we won a bunch of Blues Blast Awards and I was touring on that and working this job; my life was a little crazy. So, then I said, "You know what? Enough!" I had 13 years on the job and I was like, I hate this job (laughs), I hate it and I can make a living playing music. I could support my family and make a living playing music and so I took the jump, it was a leap of faith and then the pandemic hit (laughs). So, I wrote songs for years, I had nothing better to do because as a touring musician, during that time our life stopped. So, I wrote songs and right before that hit, I had started up a conversation with Bruce Iglauer, he had come out to a gig of ours in Chicago. I just started sending him songs and eventually he was like, "Alright son" because Bruce listens to everything; he's legendary for listening to everything that's sent to him and finally he said, "Enough, I get it, you can write a song. Send me 11 that I like and we'll talk about a record" and 30 songs later (laughs) we put out "The Hard Line" and it has been great ever since"

Citing Muddy Waters as one of his influences, he also touts the Garden State's own Bruce Springsteen as having a huge impact on his life and career. A rabid fan of "The Boss," he shared several stories about potential meetings and sightings of the music legend but seemingly fell just shy of such.

"I ended up doing this Americana stuff before I signed with Alligator and SoozieTyrell came and played on it and she's just amazing. I just wanted to sit there and talk Bruce with her all day but she was like, "I got stuff to do here, let's do the song (laughs)." She's a total pro, an amazing person and a real pro but yeah, I love Bruce, I'm a huge Bruce fan and maybe one of these days I'll get to meet him."

When asked if he was familiar with The Lizzie Rose and its intimate setting, he was quick to respond about performing there and in smaller venues throughout the country.

"The band is five pieces, bass, drums, harmonica, piano or organ; every now and then my original tenor player comes out with us but I think at The Lizzie Rose it's just gonna be five pieces. I've played there a bunch of times, I love it because people are on top of you and I love that vibe and the sound is always good and Lou and the ladies; the hospitality is fantastic. So, I dig playing there, I've been playing there now for about 10 years; there's a club in Florida called the Little Bar and it's like half the size of The Lizzie Rose. People are basically sitting between me and my bass player, there is no stage but it's like that, it's like a group experience (laughs). I don't even feel like an entertainer, I feel like we are all in this boat together; that's sort of how I feel at Lizzie Rose (laughs). There was a place that we'd play in Poughkeepsie called, The Dirty and before that it was called Trolleys and after Levon played on our demo, he would show up at these little club dates just because he liked playing with us. So, we're playing this little hole in the wall in Poughkeepsie and I get a call saying, "Alright, Levon is coming out tonight, have a kit ready for him" and the owner of the place is like, "Why didn't you tell me a rock and roll hall of famer was coming out?" I was like, Paul, if I knew a rock and roll hall of famer was coming out, you wouldn't be paying us 500 bucks (laughs), you'd be paying us a lot more than that, don't look a gift horse in the mouth" and he said, "Good point" (laughs)."

That being said; Chris says there are some new wrinkles in his set.

"We are playing there on a Monday and Lou doesn't usually do stuff on Mondays but I told him we were heading south. We're playing the Turning Point on September 29 and then we're heading south through DC and then to Florida. So, I was like, it lined up perfectly and I promised Lou I'd get some people out so that's why I had Matt LaFollette give you a call because I want to sell some tickets. We'll play until Lou shuts the lights off (laughs), we do at least 90 minutes if not two hours. We'll probably do at least two hours, first set will be a bit longer, then we'll take a break and sell some merch and then do another set; it'll be a good honest show, I like playing. We're starting to break out stuff from the next record so there will be some new cuts. I'm doing it a little bit different this time; I want them roadworthy before they go on the record. I spent a ton of studio time because I started recording a lot of it during the pandemic. So, rather than rehearsing and going in and recording; I wanted these songs like clockwork before I go into the studio this time, so we're breaking a lot of them out on the road and it's working. Some of the songs from the last record have taken on brand new lives since we've been touring on it since January. So, things happen and so I want those things to happen before I record them. I'm gonna be taking my road band into the studio and so it's all good. We're a live band, my heroes are guys like Bruce; I've seen Bruce a dozen times and not once did he not bring it. You never feel cheated at a Springsteen show. Even now when he's not like he was when he was 30 and nobody is but you still leave exhausted; those are my type of heroes. Even Levon, he was the same way. Levon was all about the live show and that's why I do it; I'm not in it not for the money, although I'm sure there is money to be made (laughs)."
