Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...8/10/23

By Danny Coleman

"It's all a feel good thing; know what I mean? There are a few one-offs but this is a nice string because we have about five gigs in the area," laughed Blues great Toronzo Cannon as he discussed his upcoming August 16 show at New York's famed Iridium, lyrics, pizza and much more.

Cannon, just like his first album, "The Chicago Way" is a veteran of the Chicago blues scene who is quoted as saying, "I'm proud to be standing on the shoulders of every great Chicago blues musician who came before me," is hell-bent on carrying the tradition of people like Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and so many others forward.

Cannon's last release, "The Preacher, The Politician or The Pimp" is not far in the rearview mirror just yet but he confesses that he is currently about to enter the studio to begin recording his next one. With that in mind, this string of shows has him doing things a bit different with the recording process.

"We're not supporting a new album yet because we're in the studio about to record but we are putting the songs on stage to see if they're stage ready," he said with certainty. "I've never incorporated that in my process but I just started that with this particular album because I started thinking about my song "Johnny Cockaroo" when it took off. My "Johnny Cockaroo" song didn't sound anything like the live "Johnny Cockaroo" now; it developed over time. There is a method with comedians, they would try out different things at certain shows to see if they worked and I thought that I would incorporate that in my next CD; put it on stage, see some reactions and maybe change some things around."

OK, so, does that mean that he'll be experimenting on stage or perhaps expanding things a bit?

"I don't do a lot of improvisation musically with my songs and the band. Musically, I let them have their solos and I do my thing but we never kind of really stray off and go into another song back to back. The only time I improvise is probably doing banter between the songs and the things I might say to introduce the songs but musically we just have to do our thing; it's not like you're going to hear what's right on the record, it's not one of those tight knit bands like that. We're loose, the drummer might do something to influence the bass player and influence me or visa versa but we don't really go off into jam band status if that makes sense."

"There are some nuances where you get a feeling on stage but my musicians have been with me a while now, Brian Quinn on bass and Dante Phillip on drums and we pretty much know each other," he continued. "The bass player may influence the drummer to do something or visa versa or influence me to do something but I pride myself more lyrically but the music has to be loose yet tight; if that makes sense (laughs)."

Cannon is quick to praise his fellow musicians and rarely, if ever uses different players. When asked if he has ever thought of adding new musicians to gain a new perspective or looks forward to performing with others at times either through calling someone up on stage or due to necessity; his answer was quick and to the point.

"I've done that lots of times, had others join me but never with a side man, I'm diplomatic with my band but sometimes I'm like, nah, my voice doesn't go there. When I play with musicians I like to know them, I don't sub-out a lot and if I do, I like to know the person that is subbing in my band. I'm not one of these guys who says, hey, learn my material, I'll see you in Texas; I just can't do that."

As a young child, Cannon would hang outside of blues music clubs in Chicago listening to the legends of the genre and now as an adult; who can be found on his playlists when he's relaxing?

"Elmore James brings tears to my eyes, Lightnin' Hopkins makes me smile and cry at the same time. Just to see the expressions on his face and how he moves, the song content because I'm a lyricist; Ronnie Earl, I listen to Ronnie because he does the same thing and I can hear everything he's saying and he is one of the few that do that for me."

Lyrics are very important to him and his latest effort is proof of that but he is very mindful that there can also be a touch of light heartedness; especially with "Serious" subject matter.

"I've written a couple of songs on my last album, "The Preacher, The Politician or The Pimp," I like to write original songs and it has kind of a Curtis Mayfield feel to it and it's just kind of documenting what I perceive sometimes as, all of these guys have a gift of words to make people do things against their best interest. So; what's the difference? I try to be thoughtful in my lyrical content but then also, there are songs that I've written like "Insurance" which has a Jimmy Reed feel to it but insurance is a serious subject but you'll laugh because of the things that I'm going through to try and get the insurance.. Sometimes when I do listen to some blues, some people just want to get to the guitar solo or the piano solo and I hate the predictable rhyme words in a song like, beat street, air hair or whatever; it's like c'mon man, let's put a little bit more thought into writing these songs and if you don't have it, maybe you should co-write with somebody but that's how the music or the genre doesn't move forward  because they are not putting thought into it or the lyrics."

Toronzo says that the length of his shows varies depending on the venue but seriously, we are wanting to know; what about the pizza?

"I go anywhere from 75 to 90 minutes unless it's a club situation and then maybe two 60s or something like that. It's just a good time, I tell my stories, my original songs all in a contemporary context and then being in New York I have the whole Chicago and New York debate (laughs); I'm gonna lean heavy on some of that. I've got to represent Chicago  in New York so, OK, here we go, let's see what I can do. I do have a small story though, recently we just played all around France and Belgium and we're at the Eiffel Tower and I'm just yelling, Chicago, Chicago and I hear some guy in a very American accent yell, "Your Pizza is trash!" So, I turned around and saw who it was and I said, "You from New York?" He said, "Jersey" and I said, "Close enough" (Laughs) but it was a nice little banter. I mean, here we are, two Americans on the Eiffel Tower debating who has the best pizza; it was cool."
