Rock On! This Week

"Yeah, we've got a few singles out from the next record and we are dropping the whole record on May 17," stated musician, songwriter and crossword puzzle creator Peter Muller as he discussed his new record, "More Time," his collaboration with Lisa Loeb, upcoming tour dates and more.

Muller, a former resident of the Garden State says he utilizes, "Two sides of his brain," due to his math and financial backgrounds as well as literary exploits in the world of crossword puzzle creation.

"I was raised in Wayne, NJ by immigrant parents; my mom was a doctor from Brazil and my dad was a mastering engineer. They came to The States later in life and had kids later in life and they're no longer with us. I've always played music but I couldn't write songs, I kind of have two sides to my brain; one is very good at math, numbers and puzzles. I've had regular crossword puzzles in The Washington Post and The New York Times; I've even pinch hit for Will Shortz a few weeks ago at The American Crossword Puzzle Tournament; I was asked to emcee. So, the math side of my brain; I built a group, which is still around 30 years ago that uses math to trade in financial markets and it's something I've been really passionate about and I've been pretty successful at; I built it in the '90s and while I was building it, I let my music go. I still had a grand piano in my apartment but I didn't really play it that much and then one day, I was working really great but once I achieved a level of success that I never thought I would, I realized, wait a second, there is more to life. So, I kept going and my life blew up a little bit and that's what got me into songwriting."

"I shifted gears and started writing songs," he  continued to explain. "I went to a graduate program in musical theater where I learned song critiquing and I started a song circle in my apartment in Manhattan, we met almost every week for five years and that led to me writing a couple of albums and putting them out and getting more serious. The first few songs were about heartbreak because that's how my life kind of blew apart and I got a little more sophisticated and right when I was ready to put a third album out; I met the woman who became my wife and life took a detour. We moved to California, had a couple of kids; I would play regularly in New York because the group was still in New York and I would come out there but I wasn't writing that much. Then in 2013 or '14, the business was stable and I thought, I want to dive into this again and I started with a vengeance. This is my fourth album since then and I started with a fella named Rick DiPaffe who worked with John Leventhal as a producer and then the legendary Rob Mathes who works regularly with Springsteen and Sting; he's a friend and I'm honored that he works with me too and then this last record, I made a little departure and made it in Memphis with a guy named Matt Ross-Spang. All the while I kind of kept writing and maybe five years ago, I decided that I wanted to start going out and playing some music; I have a family and a business so I can't be on the road 250 dates a year but I aspire to 50 live performances a year and so far we're doing that. The pandemic put a bit of a halt to that but I'm out there writing and playing and it gives me great joy."

One of the singles from the album is a slow, bluesy type number called, "Run Out of Love" and it features the aforementioned Lisa Loeb. The style of the song is more the exception than the rule for Muller; or is it?

"Lisa Loeb, it was a connection that got me there and she listened to the song, liked it and wanted to do it; we also opened for her for five dates last summer and she was lovely but I definitely have some bluesy songs. There is an older song called "Scraps of Your Love" that kind of has a similar blues feel and a song called, "Not Your Man" from earlier, I have a number of songs that have that vibe but this record particularly has more Southside Johnny-ish horns and kind of like grit than stuff I've done previously as a result of the Memphis players on it. Matt made the record very differently than Rob, they learned the songs while I was down there, we didn't even use a click track, we just played it. We used Will Sexton on guitar and he just threw this guitar riff on there; I don't know how his brain works, he had a stroke and maybe it made him think maybe very non-linearly but he came up with this incredible hook on the song that just makes it and I just love that hook and because we didn't use a click track; the record has a rawness. There were some things we wanted to fix and we couldn't change and we said, "Ah, whatever" and I'm happy with it."

Rawness used to be often times treasured in the recording process. There is something about a good live sound or the occasional "Mistake" that can enhance or create a nuance in the listening experience but today it's not always welcome.

"Modern radio is a little less forgiving of some of the rawness that used to be on records because it's so easy to polish stuff; you lose something too without that rawness," agrees Muller. "Go back and listen to some Neil Young stuff and it's like, OK, that's really pitchy and out of tune or some of the Stones stuff; man they're speeding up my 20 BPM but it's like, OK, I never noticed and it's great!"

"More Time"  was released recently just over two weeks ago and its title isn't exactly what one may think.

"More Time," comes from the first single and it's a song about temptation; that's typically how I introduce it. What's interesting is, my wife grew up with Nirvana in the '90s and that's her kind of music so the kind of stuff I do doesn't always resonate with her but that song, when I first started playing it, she was like, "Oh my God, that song! That song, that's your hit! I love that song! Can you record it right now? I need to send it to all of my friends right now." Now if you knew my wife, that was just the most surprising reaction I could imagine because I never get that from her. I get the, "Ok, yeah, I'm kind of sick of that one" or "That one's not bad" or "Is that one about me?" This one, she just absolutely loved; it's a piano and vocal thing and we put on top, a wonderful string quartet and a little bit of timpani and it really holds up. There is no drum set or anything like that or guitar; it's a really cool haunting song and the title makes a great album title because we would all love more time."

"I don't actually think in terms of time," he continued, "I'm one of those people who does a lot of stuff. I work out every day, I have the business, I create crossword puzzles, I write a lot of songs, I put out albums, I tour, I have a family and a lot of times people ask, "Hey; how do you have time for that? How much time do you spend on each?" My response is, that's not the right question because I don't think of it as how many hours I spend on something. When you're doing things that are inherently creative, it's really about energy because if you're in the right frame of mind and in tune with the universe and need to write a song; that song can basically come out in less than an hour and I've written a bunch of songs very, very quickly and if you're not in tune, you can spend a few days and get something that's mediocre and frustrating. So, it's really a question of energy as opposed to time and if you're spending energy doing something and you're getting energy back from it because you love it for the passion and connecting with people and achieving your dream and all of that; it's almost like doing it for free because you get the energy back and you can keep cycling it and cycling it. I'm very rarely in a position where I find myself having run out of time. I think that most people work on creative stuff incredibly inefficiently so the "More Time" thing is not a plea for, I wish there were more hours in a day; it's like when you're in a cool experience, when you're experiencing something exciting or energetic; can I have more time to just stay in this moment? That's not how life works because the whole beauty and joy of it is because it's ephemeral. Have you ever seen the movie, "Meet Joe Black?" Anthony Hopkins is this 65 year old newspaper magnate whom everybody loves who is kind of having a heart attack and Brad Pitt, who is "Death," shows up and basically says, OK, it's your time but I'm really curious as to how you're living, so I'll make a deal with you. I'll let you keep living if you let me hang out with you, I'm not going to tell you how long, maybe until I get bored; I'll let you keep living if you let me be with you and watch everything you do. It is an absurd plot and he winds up falling for Anthony Hopkins' daughter in a complicated weird plot but it's really cool and heartfelt and I love stuff like that because it's all about energy and not about time and when it's actually time for Hopkins to go; he's kind of ready and it is what it is."

With the release of "More Time;" what does he plan on doing to support the record?

"I'm doing a bunch of touring, I'm opening for some people you may know including John Oates, Livingston Taylor, a CD release in Santa Barbara and one in New York City at Joe's Pub on July 10 and then traveling around doing more dates, we've shot some videos and we're gonna shoot some more and create cool fun art and hope people love it."
