Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites....5/25/23

By Danny Coleman

" I played at the summer concert series that they had there in 2021. They were doing that outdoor thing, I mean it was pretty cool. I thought it was cool for the people that were camping or staying at the site because they just got to see a bunch of shows."

Vernon, NJ native Katie Henry is setting the world of Blues and Blues Rock music on its proverbial ear. Her fresh sound and writing style was recently on display at The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton and prior to that show she more than willingly opened up about her "Journey."

"Well, I'll start with my early years," she said with a chuckle. "I played the piano, so that was my first musical love and my parents are not musicians but they're music enthusiasts and they would take me to see a bunch of bands. I was definitely way too young to be in some of those places but it's just funny because that's how it used to be. You were able to smoke inside then and I have memories of my clothes smelling like cigarettes. I was a kid and that was very much a part of my upbringing. So, I kind of had no choice and at first it felt like all this was what I was made to do but then it became something more and I truly love this. Music was always the thing that connected me with people and my friends; my best friend in high school was a big Beatles fan; which, I am still to this day a very big Beatle fan and we went to things like "Beatles Fest" and did all this fun stuff and she became a real inspiration. We always stayed in touch and then she asked me to write a song for her and I recorded it and wrote it for her and that was kind of like the moment where I realized I could do this. Some of my earliest songs were like Christmas gifts to my dad. I didn't get you anything this year so, I need to write a good song for you. My songwriting came about in that type of way and then when I went to college; I went to the Manhattan College and I was in the Jazz band and I met a drummer there who was also in college and had his own band and I was fascinated by that, that I had met somebody my own age that was in their own band so that was; I remember it was like a big moment for me. Then it wasn't until I guess, my junior year of college that I started doing open mics and at the open mic at an Irish bar near where I went to school the bartender was looking to put together a blues band and asked if I want to play keys and I played my first shows in local bars in The Bronx with that band and it was a great experience doing that and then when I graduated college I was doing more open mics and getting work as much as possible. Then, I met my bassist and co-writer at one of those. Our meeting felt very serendipitous because we had similar interests in music and writing which allowed us to write and record and yeah, that's kind of the formative stuff."

"Serendipitous" is perhaps an understatement as well as one pretty darn good John Cusack movie but in Katie's case; it struck again when she was signed to Ruf Records.

"Funny story; I feel like my whole music journey has been me following signs to just keep going and meeting Tom Ruf and the timing of that was very serendipitous because we knew that he was going to fly in from Germany to see a show and we needed to book a show in order to have him come to one," she laughed once again. "So, we booked one for March 14, 2020 at Bernie's Hillside and a shout out to Bernie's Hillside because we played gigs there and we feel that we got a lot better as a result of feeling at home in that venue; it is in a very rural setting so, they can kind of play by their own rules, so to speak in certain ways and even though everything was closing, one of those ways was that they still stayed open even though everything else was in the process closing. So, the show was still on and Thomas flew on the last flight from Germany to the U.S. and was able to be there and he loved the show and we stayed in touch kind of finalizing what it would be like to work together right when the pandemic hit. I emphasize that because it was so huge for me because I was coming to that point where I was like, OK, my first album has been out for a while, I've been getting my feet wet in the touring world; we had done a tour in California which was my first real tour and so, just the timing of that was really critical because it kept me focused knowing that there were things on the other side of the pandemic because that was definitely a difficult time for a lot of artists to get through."

Blues music is often misunderstood, especially by mainstream radio and Henry's discovering the genre was more than the results of some good parenting and the exposure she received to music thanks to her mom and dad. Seemingly, her stumbling upon the Blues is kind of like the great "Chicken or the egg" debate.

"That's what is so interesting about the way me and the Blues found each other; it's the root of everything and the common vein throughout all of the music I love but I was never really conscious of that or was like, I'm listening to the Blues or that I was going out of my way to listen to it. It was like, this is music that moves me and that I connect to and that I like and then I found out it was the Blues."

"Like I said earlier," she continued, "It was The Beatles, which was very formative. Then when I was 13 or 14 I got really into The Doors and my mom's best friend was dating a guy who was the lead singer of Crystal Ship and one time he came over when I was 13 or 14; it was such a random thing that was impactful in hindsight but he said to me, "Just play with your left hand, da-da-da-dunt" and then he was just saying whatever came to mind and it was such a formative jam experience. The fact that I was also reading the Jim Morrison biography at the time; I loved how mysterious the book and Jim were and I was just into all of that and Janis Joplin. I did a show the other week and somebody told me that I had a Janis vibe going on and somebody else said a Susan Tedeschi vibe and then yet another said Bonnie Raitt and I thought, that's it! There's the trifecta! Which I found very re-affirming because if I'm giving off those vibes that's very affirming for me."

So, she's signed to Ruf, touring on a regular basis and is very well-deserving of all the good things coming her way now and in the future; from where does she draw her inspiration that will continue to carry her forward?

"When I see somebody doing something that I agree with and that I can identify with, it inspires me to do it and it's kind of like a line that you want to rise too. Women like Carolyn Wonderland and Ruthie Foster are really great and very inspirational."
