Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...4/6/23

By Danny Coleman

“I’m in California in the hills. I just got done my two mile walk while listening to Rachmaninoff,” laughed a jovial, vibrant and very excited Jon Anderson as he discussed his upcoming shows with The Band Geeks; the first in the New Jersey area being April 16 in Newark at the New Jersey Arts Center.

Anderson rose to fame as the vocalist and front man for the legendary progressive rock band YES and many of the songs he wrote or co-wrote have become engrained in the very fabric of our lives. "Awaken," "Close to the Edge," "Roundabout," "I've Seen All Good People" "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" and so many more have permeated the airwaves, our living rooms and music venues for more than five decades.

No matter the incarnations; Anderson has always and will always be involved with and/or linked to the music, the theatrics and the incredible storied history of YES and now, thanks to a friend; Jon is once again about to breathe life back into the epics and classics he treasures so deeply.

“About a year ago, a friend of mine who works at Sirius sent me a video of these guys playing the Hell out of YES," he began with a laugh. "I was mesmerized by two things, the excitement of the way they played and the fact that they sounded just like YES in the ‘70s; it was amazing and from that moment I started thinking, maybe we should go on tour. So, three months later I called up the bass player, Richie Castellano and said, I love the fact that you love YES like I do; why don’t we go out and do a tour of the epics and the classics? Richie? Are you OK? (laughs) Richie was dumfounded of course and said, “We’d love to, we would really love to!” So, we started rehearsing a couple of months ago via Zoom and then he sent me all the tapes of the recordings and I'm going through each song every day making sure that I can sing it and they're excited to do a short tour and see how it goes.”

The "They" he is referring to are The Band Geeks, a group of seasoned musicians from well-known bands and a podcast called, "Band Geek." What started as an "Audio only" podcast amongst fellow musicians can now be found on YouTube where they perform with a rotating star-studded cast.

The Band geeks are comprised of the aforementioned Castellano (Blue Oyster Cult) on bass guitar, Chris Clark (Brand X, John Entwistle) on keyboards, Andy Ascolese (Kasim Sultan's Utopia) on drums, Robert Kipp (Kashmir) on keyboards and guitar and Andy Graziano on guitar and bass. So, after the initial shock of Anderson's request; were they as excited as he is?

“I really don't know but I just know that he was excited like I was just to say thank you for loving Yes music," laughed Anderson once again. "You know the idea that this band of musicians just sounds like the record and not so much like the record but they sound like YES performing; of course, it sounds like the record at times but they sound just like YES when I remember going out on tour with YES in the seventies. So, we’ve got to start somewhere and we’re excited to do a really good tour, we’ve been rehearsing and that’s the name of the game.”

Many times, when a band's music has been around for a lengthy period and in Anderson's case, they have been performing it for a long time and a new set of musicians respectfully recreates their timeless pieces; it can renew a desire to revisit the past and in some instances, breathe new life into an old friend. When asked if he agreed; Jon was emphatic in his response.

“Just the way they do it; you're darn right, it's like a breath of fresh air to me! I haven't been with YES for quite a long time now and I've done a lot of solo shows with some great musicians like Jean-Luc Ponty; I even did an album, “1000 Hands” with all these amazing musicians and then this happened and I thought, this is perfect in my time of life to actually go out and revisit the classics and the epics.”

“Actually," he continued, "This summer we are going to go on tour with The Academy, which is a group of teenagers who are going to do a tour of Europe doing “Close to the Edge” and all the big famous songs with 16- and 17-year-old really talented guys and girls. It is really amazing and for me it is very much a thrill because, you know you feel younger and the three things that happen; there is hope, joyfulness and gratefulness. Hope they can play it and boy can they play it so darn good. “Heart of the Sunrise,” my God! “Close to the Edge,” my God! I think these kids are really talented and they will move on directly through the music and so on and so on.”

Ah youth and seeing them appreciate the music of YES must be rewarding. Anderson says he has been impressed by the younger generations for quite some time and there are times when he can't help but relish his good fortune.

“Actually, it started about 25 years ago. YES was playing in Philadelphia and backstage after the show there were all of these kids with School Of Rock T-shirts and I said, OK guys; you play rock and roll? They said, “Yes” and I asked; what kind of music do you play? They said, “Frank Zappa and sometimes YES” and I said, oh my God! Then I met Paul Green who was the arranger and the manager of School Of Rock; not the Jack Black “School Of Rock” but the actual school and he said to me; “Would you like to come and work with the kids?” I said, I don’t think so (laughs) and then about a month later he sent me a cassette of the kids playing “Heart of the Sunrise” and they were actually going to L.A. to present a documentary that was made about these kids and it’s a great video. I saw the tape of them playing  “Heart of the Sunrise” and I was mesmerized. So, I called him up and I said; When are you gonna be in LA” He said, “In two weeks’ time” and I said, I'll be there and I'll sing it with them and I did (laughs) and I surprised them. It’s hard to believe that was 25 years ago but it was just wonderful to be around and as I say, every time we do a selfie, I'll say; who's that old guy? Hey, that's me! (laughs). I’m 80 next year; I feel young and foolish but I’m writing more music than I’ve ever written in my life and I’m very excited about the future over the next 10 years and so on. I just wrote a song; I have a song that I’ve loved for many years that I've never recorded properly and I sent it to Richie and he made a beautiful rendition of it and we’re gonna perform that in the middle of the show. New songs are like new blood; you know? They’re just like new energy and then you say; maybe we will do an album or that kind of thing.”

“It’s a wonder to behold," he went on, "I remember a story with YES in the late seventies and we were playing in Copenhagen and I felt like the audiences were digging it and the band but I felt we weren't pushing the music at that point as much as I wanted to at that time. I recall waking up a bit confused about it one morning and thinking; is YES music really reaching anybody? I went to the airport with the guys and I went to look for a necklace in this shop and I started looking in the necklace area; since we were on tour, for something like a big sort of shiny something for around my neck sort of thing, as you do (laughs) and this little lady come over and she was an Asian lady and asked if she could help and I said, no, I'm just looking and she said, “No, I can help” and I said, no, I'm just looking but thank you. I had long hair at that time and she said, “You look like a rock and roll person” and I said, yeah, I’m in a band and we’re just going to Sweden and she said, “I have a question for you; do you know Jon Anderson?” I said; could you say that again” She said, “Yes, Jon Anderson; do you know him?” I said, it's me! She nearly fainted and I think that was God saying, you actually touch people all over the world; so, I just stopped mourning. That is a great feeling, it's what I do; you know? I’m out there singing and shopping and people wave and say, Hi and I say; How are you doing? I’m doing fine, thank you. (laughs)”

Along those lines; did he ever think he's still be doing what he loves after all these years?

“That's sweet fantastic; you know? Because I've been doing it since YES started, I've been watching jazz musicians that were famous and they were outstanding and they were still out there doing it and I’d think well, when I get to that age, I'm gonna still wanna do it too; you know? Especially YES music because it is what we created and it was something a little bit different than the norm and we didn't think about wanting to be pop stars until “90125” and then all of a sudden, we became pop stars; which was amazing and then we just kept going.”

According to Anderson, their stage set runs a nice length, “Probably two hours, we're just aiming for around that time; a good two hours of music can really not drive people crazy but just keep them on their toes”  and he can't emphasize enough how much he and The Band Geeks look forward to this run of shows; several of which are close to home or here in New Jersey.

Along with April 16 in Newark, there is a New York City show scheduled for April 21 at The Palladium, April 23 at The Santander PAC in Reading, PA and two shows at The Scottish Rite in Collingswood, NJ; plenty of opportunities to satisfy every YES fan.
