Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...4/4/24

"I'm fantastically well; how are you? Currently I'm in Buenos Aires and yeah, I'm busy, I try to stay that way," said Joshua Radin as we caught up with him before a recent string of City Winery Shows last week in New York and Philadelphia. "Yeah, I'm doing a whole tour of them; I like wine (laughs)."

On the road for a short run of only several weeks, a run which began back on March 19 and concludes with four shows in four nights from April 4 thru April 7 with the final night in Boston being a sold out event; Radin plans on staying busy once this short tour is finished.

"This tour is just a short little three week run and then I'm heading back to L.A. and going in the studio," he stated and then explained how he has his next album written and ready to be recorded but to understand a bit about the man himself, his songwriting process and his wanderlust; one only needs to ask him about all of it..

"I left Cleveland for college at Northwestern, then I was a little kids art teacher and then a screenwriter in New York for about six years and then when I turned 30, I bought a guitar, taught myself a few chords and started writing songs. That's why the album is called, "Though The World Will Tell Me So" because I've always been one of those people who is a bit cynical when teachers, friends, parents, authority figures tell you, this is the way things should be done. Ever since birth I've been like AAAAHHHH and I figure out a different way. It's a journey, you have to stay curious."

"I've been a nomad the last two years; "Though The World Will Tell Me So;" I released it as two volumes but it's a 10 song album and it's on one vinyl; have you listened? Tell you about it? That reminds me of that Elvis Costello quote, "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." I don't know how to talk about it, I can play it and I can write it  but in terms of the inspiration for the album; it's a travel diary about me being a nomad. I sold my house in Los Angeles two years ago, I gave away most of my stuff and I've been traveling the world writing and recording and that's what the album is; basically, it's a travel diary. I love to travel and this was liberating and maybe a tiny bit scary but that is what makes it fun."

Radin enjoys "Experiences" because he feels that is what makes us who we are as opposed to memories which can be fleeting or not recalled properly with age and his songwriting approach is very much reflective as such.

"I write down things all of the time and I am always carrying around a little notebook and a lot of times it's photos. I would say that a lot of the inspiration I get is usually from walking through museums or bookstores, out at night, maybe in a bar talking to random people. I just want it to be about experiences more than things because all of the things I've collected over the years aren't really kindling any joy for me but experiences do. I'm a firm believer that we as human beings are just a bundle of memories. So, I saved a few objects that hold dear memories for me like family heirlooms and things like that; a few guitars, some books and records but most of that stuff, I don't have much memory of but I do garner a lot of memories from talking to people. Especially during the pandemic, I found myself being too much of a consumer being locked away in my house in L.A. and not seeing anyone for so long. There was retail therapy on Amazon at three in the morning because I was bored and things showing up at my door and I'm like; what? I don't need this! I made a lot of those late night purchases where I just thought, "I have no idea why I have this; I'd much rather spend my money on travel."

"One of my favorite memories as a kid was playing in a big cardboard box in the backyard with my little sister," he continued. "I have no idea what came in the box but we were obsessed with the box. My inspiration tends to come from falling in and out of love; that kind of poetry has been going around since poetry was invented; for me it is always the music that comes first and it's usually a melody that I have floating around in my head that I can't get out and the only way to get it out is to write it out, otherwise, it would be maddening and it's therapeutic for me. I love to walk, one of the reasons I left L.A. is because it's not a good town to walk and so, you are in the car all of the time. I like to get lost and bump into people and when I have these melodies floating around in my head I usually have some lines that just pop into my head and I get to a guitar and write it out."

His approach to live performances is one that perhaps more performers and touring artists should pay attention to; seriously, they should.

"The last tour I did all solo acoustic, this tour the opening act is going to play with me on half the set; Maddie Poppe and her guitarist Gabe will play and sing with me on a set and I'll do half a set solo. I don't really do any setlists, it's just sort of a spontaneous thing and I take requests, that way every show is different. I like to break that fourth wall and be as intimate as humanly possible and the set length depends on the audience; it keeps it fresh for them and me. I don't like when an audience comes to see me play and then if I'm playing a couple of nights in the same city mor somewhere close; what's the incentive for them to come see me play a second night if it's going to be the exact same songs, the exact same stories so, I like to keep it fresh; otherwise, they can go to a Broadway show."

Two decades in and Radin still appreciates his fan base and considers himself in a great position each and every time he performs.

"I feel very fortunate that these little musings that I put out into the world; that people still want to listen to and then want to come hear me play them live. I feel very fortunate, it has been 20 years now and I just finished writing the new album and I'll start recording in about a month and yeah; I'm glad that people want to hear me do it."
