Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...4/2/22

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 04/28/2022

"I was in the studio one night and my tour manager emailed me the flyer and asked me if I'd like to be a part of the tour and I was like, of course! That's no question at all, especially with NoCap who was one of the artists that I've looked up to for quite some time and as I was growing up," stated 19-year old hip-hop/rap artist Mpackt as he discussed his role on NoCap's "Mr. Crawford Tour," his lyrics, source of musical talent and an upcoming May 2 show at New York's Grammercy Theatre. "My mom died in 2019 and his music kind of reached out to me and helped me through some hard times."

A multi-instrumentalist and resident of Las Vegas, where his primary role is or at least until recently was; that of a producer, Mpackt began his association with musical instruments at the age of seven; largely due to parental influence. Hip-hop and rap artists however are usually associated more with the beats they create as opposed to actual instrumentation. So, when he writes his music; is it done "Hands on" or through the manufactured beats process and does he lean more toward the east or west coast styles?

"I kind of get a lot of my musical talents from my father. I've always been musically inclined growing up; I've never really not wanted to do music so, my father was a big reach out for my career; he plays guitar in rock and metal bands. I play violin, guitar and piano because I am a producer as well but I don't play any instruments on stage; I create my beats and perform them. I'm usually the producer of my music, if I use anyone else it is a good friend of mine who is a producer also but other than that I write my own music aside from him. Being from the west coast, that's where I get a lot of my influence from but I definitely have a lot of east coast icons that I look up too; Biggie is great and all of those guys are fantastic as far as east coast style goes and I listen to a lot of those guys today. Although I'm definitely quite young I definitely remember hearing of the rivalry but I wasn't around for that time."

Guided by Uproar Entertainment Group, MPackt has started a Kickstarter campaign http://kck.st/3LsHY4v to offset tour costs and assist with his creation of new music; like his new single, "Stay Dangerous." When asked if he feels he has experienced enough in his 19 years to write relatable material; his answer, like his lyrics, was authentic.

"My lyrics, I'm diverse with my flow, I don't have the same exact flow and when I write my lyrics I try to stay true to what I go through and what I've lived through. So, as far as my lyrics, I just speak, I just speak real; excuse my language but real shit; you know?"

April 24  was the first night of an 18-city tour and touring isn't something he has done on a scale such as this. How is he managing the day-to-day rigors of the road and the stage?

"We just started the other night in Dallas, Texas and it was a huge show, it was sold out, it was an amazing show and I'm looking forward to another tonight; we just pulled into Houston. No days off is the way we prefer it when you're trying to reach a certain level; I'm out here with my tour manager and another artist. I love it, I'm starting to get used to being on the road, it's different from being back at home and I can't say I can complain. I haven't performed anywhere specific in Las Vegas, I've done everything outside of my home state but when I'm home I'm a full-time producer outside of making my own music."

"I'm on the entire tour right now with NoCap and Big Yavo and our performance set is about 20-minutes long. My focus is really crowd control and about giving a good performance so, my focus once I'm on stage is really just the crowd and controlling them and keeping everybody prepared so that they aren't concerned when they hit the stage about the crowd. I'm getting to where I'm getting used to becoming a hype-man, this is something that I was definitely not used to but I'm getting better at it and doing my crowd control and I'll go from there."

The May 2 Grammercy show is followed by a stop in Hartford, CT before hearding to Buffalo and Boston before turning west; so, what does he think of getting to grace some of these iconic stages?

"The Grammercy is huge for me, a lot of artists and people in general would die to perform at The Grammercy so, I'm definitely looking forward to that show. The House Of Blues was always one of my tops too and the fact that I'm doing that now is huge for me; you know what I'm saying? Walking out on that stage is totally different than rehearsal, it's a good feeling all the way; it's an amazing feeling but a gut-wrenching feeling; you know what I'm saying? By the time I jump up on stage and start performing the nerves just trickle away, so.."
