Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...3/23/22

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 03/23/2023

“We shoved off on February 16 and planned to get home on March 16th and then we have the show in the northeast Ohio area and then we're back on the road for a couple of short runs over the next two weekends; we've been busy.”

From Akron Ohio with zest comes The Shootouts; a group of very dedicated musicians who are intent on keeping old school Country and Honky-Tonk music alive and well; kicking. Their new album, "Stampede" features special guests Raul Malo (The Mavericks), members of Asleep at The Wheel and was produced by 10-time Grammy winner Ray Benson.

Recently, vocalist Emily Bates gave us a little insight to the band, the strength of friendships, the very big day that was February 24 and their future plans.

Ryan (Guitarist Humbertand I are celebrating 20 years of singing together this year," she began. "We started out doing more of Ryan's original singer-songwriter music and Brian Poston joined us on that; I don't know, probably a decade ago, somewhere around 2015 or so and then Brian and Ryan started The Shootouts as a side project. They connected over their love of classic country music and thought it would be really fun to just go play some of the music that they loved because they felt like it wasn't getting enough airtime in the world these days. So, they started this as a side project and then I joined in gosh, probably nine months or so into the project for Ryan's grandpa's birthday party. He was having his 85th birthday party and asked the band to play and Ryan asked me to join them and I did and it just immediately clicked; it felt right and like we were meant to be doing this and it took off from there. So, we've been focusing solely on The Shootouts ever since and we’ve really had some cool successes with it.”

When the word "Band" comes to mind, most think of individuals with similar interests, tastes and likes who have come together for a common cause but in The Shootouts case; their strength lies in their diversity.

“We all have learned to love Country in different ways," laughed Bates. "I grew up listening to kind of contemporary country music, especially the ladies like Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride and all of those great crooners and then over the years, I dug back in the catalog and have become a huge fan of the classics such as Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn. Our bass player joined about a year ago and he comes from more of a rock background, so he's been learning a lot about country music over the last year and really appreciates it now; I think in a different way. Our drummer; he's been with us for just a few months now and our Opry debut was like his seventh gig with us or something crazy like that and he’s a youngster, he's the baby in the band and he's also learning a lot about country music. He came up through the jazz world, so that's kind of his background. I think it's cool because we can all bring different influences to the table but then we're very, very much focused on that classic country and Honky-Tonk sound and with our different influences; we want to make sure that we're honoring that tradition.”

Wait! Opry? Remember February 24? This was a very large day in the band's history as not only was "Stampede" officially released but they also made their first ever appearance at the famed Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

“For sure, it was an amazing experience in itself; it was just so wonderful everybody was so welcoming and kind and warm and truly just made it feel like home," gushed an enthusiastic Bates. "Obviously we were all nervous going into it; more like respectfully anxious because it's a big stage and you know there is so many years of history there but we also walked in the building and we felt calm, ready and excited and it was very overwhelming emotionally just to be to be there and to be a part of all of that but somehow we felt ready to handle it. So, it went great, we played three songs and the crowd was very kind and seemed to enjoy it quite a lot and it sounds like hopefully we'll get an opportunity to go back. We initially were supposed to be at the Ryman but they were doing renovations there for the first time in 24 years. They spent January doing that and then they moved back to the Opera House a couple of weeks before we got there.”

“The new record also came out on February 24th and we keep saying it's so funny that we woke up that day and we're like, Oh my gosh, we play the Opry today and then we were like, oh, and our album comes out too," she continued with a laugh. "I remember it was a two-fer; it was quite a way to release a new album, I can't complain at all. We got the opportunity; we had just put out our last album and I had just got connected with Ray Benson and we got the opportunity to have him produce the new record for us and we weren't about to pass that up. So, even though it was a pretty quick turnaround after the first album, we took that opportunity and we recorded the album in September of 2021 and we got to have Ray and a lot of folks from Asleep At The Wheel play on the album and we got to do some touring with them right around that time which was awesome and then we called in some friends, including Raul and Buddy Miller, Marty Stuart and Jim Lauderdale and asked them if they'd be willing to lend their talents. So, they joined us and that was a huge honor to be able to have all those folks be a part of this new record with us.”

Connecting with Grammy Award winning producers is always a good thing and adding talents such as Raul Malo is always a plus. How did Malo's involvement come about?

“So, growing up, Ryan's mom listened to The Mavericks and that's where he kind of first got that exposure and then gosh, several years ago, Brian and I were doing a different project together and had the opportunity to open for Raul and we kind of made friends and so we've connected several times over the years and when it came to doing “I'll Never Need Anyone More,” we just felt like he was the perfect fit for singing on that song; like it was right up his alley style-wise. We just knew his voice would lend something special to that so yeah, we've been really lucky enough to be friends with Raul and his team for quite a few years now.”

"Stampede" is receiving airplay on Sirius XM's Outlaw Country and has reached the Top-Five on several Country Music charts. So, with so much happening so fast; where do they go from here? Bates says they definitely have a plan.

“We’re going to finish up this little month on tour and then we have a lot of dates booked throughout the year. We're working to see what's next in terms of the number of tours but we've got a big East Coast tour coming together in May, so I know we'll be up in Boston and DC and our agent is working on finalizing that so that we have a clear direction for that. Then the goal is just to keep building on the momentum that we have; we've cracked the top ten on the Americana charts, I think we're #7 this week we're really excited about that. We just wanna keep playing music; get out there and see the public and let people hear what we have to offer. We love to play live, that's really the focus of this. We love making records and it's a ton of fun but being out there and playing live and getting to see people and see their response in real time and the interaction is a ton of fun for all of us. We just keep creating and Ryan's kind of got this business mind as well, so he's already kind of thinking, his wheels are turning on what's next and what the next album is going to look like. So, we're definitely focused on promoting this one but I wouldn't be surprised if we start planning heavily for the next go round.”
