Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...3/14/24

"This is a solo show and now that the post COVID touring world is back, I'm basically on a kind of perpetual tour. I take breaks from it but I'm doing a lot of shows now. I'm doing The Lizzie Rose, I might have a couple of other shows on the East Coast in the same vicinity and we're trying to route it so it's not crazy; I prefer driving to flying but yeah, I'm busy," stated guitarist Stanley Jordan as he talked about his two upcoming March 16 shows at The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton, NJ, his upcoming new release, influences and more.

Jordan, who is widely renowned as one of the world's greatest guitarists and a resident of Sedona, AZ,  has multiple ties to The Garden State; from his collegiate days at Princeton to residences in the north; he has a soft spot for Jersey as well as all the good things he has heard about the little music room in Tuckerton.

"It's (Sedona) an artistic community, the Red Rocks are beautiful but it has grown a lot but because it's still not so close to Phoenix I think it will always be a little bit out of the way and the pace is slower there," he began in relaxed yet deliberate tones.

"That's why I see myself as a Jersey kid too because I went to Princeton and after I graduated, I stayed for a long time. So, whenever I go there I feel that it's like a homecoming I'm sure some people will be seeing me for the first time but I also expect that I'll probably see people that I haven't seen in many, many years and that's one of the things that I love about playing in New Jersey because that's where I really started playing professionally. So, that's where my longest running listeners are, in New Jersey." I also lived in Orange and Plainfield."

Jordan, unlike many other musicians, doesn't pump out album after album; as a matter of fact, his last was something he did with Kevin Eubanks of "The Tonight Show" fame about nine years ago.

"The last release, I was on was a duets album with Kevin Eubanks and that was in 2015. The way that came about was, we were both on the same festival in Canada; we didn't play together but we were on the same festival. He did this sort of open air interview and I've always admired his playing so I was there listening to his talk; we kind of came up in the same scene together so we were familiar with each other and when I heard him talk; I realized we see things so similarly and I thought, we should really be playing together. So, I approached him and said, hey Kevin, we should do something together and he said, "Yeah, that would be great." So, we started doing some live shows together and the great thing about it is, we have this chemistry where we can just start playing, it doesn't have to be any particular song, we just play and it just happens. That was happening again, again and again during our live concerts. So, we thought we could do an album together and the arrangements could be like that; we call them "Skull Arrangements" because they just come right off the top of our heads. I'd say half the music on the album are just free improvisations that aren't like meandering new age kind of stuff which is fine but this isn't that; this is spontaneous compositions. There is a form, there's a structure but we created it right there on the spot. I've played with other talented people but for whatever reason it didn't have the same certain magic. There was a plan for us to play this past fall but Kevin wasn't able to do that but it is on our radar. I have a new album of my own that will be coming out this year and I don't have a release date for it yet but I do have a single scheduled to come out before The Lizzie Rose show; I may even have copies before I get to Lizzie Rose. I have never played there but I hear it is a really great venue and really nice and a lot of diverse quality acts play there and I'm happy to be part of that. Like I said earlier, I think there are probably some people who may be seeing me for the first time and I often recommend that people see my solo show first because I think it's a good way to kind of hear the soul of what my music is about. I do a lot of other projects, I have a jazz trio, I do a Jimi Hendrix Tribute, we have a new band which is a Grateful Dead tribute which will do its first show in April; I do a lot of diverse things. Recently I sat in with Phil Lesh, so I feel sort of connected to that part of the music world as well. I love doing all of those diverse projects but my solo show is what I consider to really be the soul of my music."

Wait; The Grateful Dead? So; how does one of the preeminent jazz guitarists on the planet figure into the Grateful Dead?

"Before I played jazz," he began slowly. "I listened to rock and blues and there were certain bands that piqued my interest to go more in a jazz direction. Chicago was one, Blood, Sweat & Tears was another and the Grateful Dead had a similar influence because they had those long jams and Jerry Garcia, who I think was influenced by Les Paul although I've never heard anyone say that; just that clean, melodic sense where he makes sure that he makes all of the chord changes in his solos. There is a lot of jazz sensibility and some of their more extended compositions like "Dark Star '' really kind of opened up that jazzy space. Even though, as a kid, I never saw them play but I grew up out in the Bay Area so they were kind of a local as well as a natural treasure so I'd always hear when they did a concert because people would be talking about it and I thought; I wonder if I could play with a band like that someday?  I thought, nah, it'll probably never happen (laughs). So, certain rock groups were moving in that direction. Jimi Hendrix definitely; there was one album that I got, "Nine to the Universe" of all studio jams with Jimi and you could hear him experimenting with Middle Eastern harmonies and more jazzy structures; it really kind of opened my mind up. So, in a lot of ways, Jimi pointed the way. I also started as a classical musician playing classical piano and the thing I liked about jazz was that it connected my favorite aspects of rock and blues on one side and classical on the other. So, it had kind of rich and complex harmonies but also that raw bluesy thing with improvisation. I remember when I was 10, there was a jazz festival, I lived in Palo Alto and this was in East Palo Alto and I saw a lot of my jazz heroes. I wasn't playing jazz myself yet but I got to see Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Turrentine, George Benson and so many great artists and I knew that they knew what they were doing even though I didn't understand what they were doing but clearly they did and that really pointed the way for me too. One of the artists that I saw was Charles Moffett who brought his family and his son Charnett was only eight when I first saw him play and we went on to become long-time collaborators but he had that same fire at the age of eight."

George Benson, as he pointed out, was one of Jordan's guitar heroes and it is always a pleasure to meet one's influencers or idols and have it be a pleasant experience.

"George Benson, in fact, George is my favorite living guitarist," he said with enthusiasm. "I saw him back at the NAMM show in Anaheim and I got a chance to tell him that. I  have met him before but this was my first chance to tell him how much I appreciate his music. He is so inspiring and his chops are just amazing and yet he's so musical."

As was stated prior, Jordan does not rush his art; new material and records are not always at the forefront of his concern but this upcoming release, scheduled for April, has even a seemingly calm Stanley Jordan rather excited.

"The album is called "Feather In The Wind" and the first single to be released is going to have Milton Nascimento on it; he has been a musical treasure and I've loved his singing and just his sound that has derived from that section of Brazil, a sort of open and jazzy sound and he epitomizes that. I was honored that he sang with me and we did a song by Joe Beam and I think that is the first song I'm going to release as a single."

Making his first appearance at The Lizzie Rose has him very enthused because he says that he has "Heard nothing but good things" about the venue. The Saturday March 16 evening show sold out almost immediately and a second 3 p.m. show has been added for which some tickets remain; Jordan says it will be a substantive event as long as those in attendance are, "In the moment."

"I'm gonna be playing some new material that I'm working on and some of the stuff from the new album. I love to improvise, so there is going to be a big part of the show where I'm just gonna go for it and play whatever comes to me and I also get a lot of requests for the things that I have recorded that really resonated with people. So, I'll be doing some of the music from my recordings as well. So, it's going to be a pretty broad mix; the main thing with my solo show is that I just try to create a space of safety and beauty and I just try to savor the moment and help the audience really just be in the moment. Our lives are so complicated these days and the thing we miss is really just being present in the moment and so I try to make the moment so special that we can share that and not want to be anywhere else; hopefully (laughs). People don't usually talk during the show because they are listening and in a place this small, they'll probably get shushed. This is definitely going to be an intimate and I think soulful event. I like those intimate rooms and now I'm looking forward to it even more."
