Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...3/13/25

"I do have a big following in the Carteret Police Department; why? I don't know," said Edwin McCain with a large laugh as he readies for his March 20 Carteret Performing Arts and Events Center and March 23 Sellersville Theatre shows. "When we used to play at B.B. King's in the city, so many Carteret cops; I'm actually sitting here looking at my honorary Carteret Police Force pullover, they used to bring us all kinds of swag and it was great. Hopefully we'll see some old friends there but I don't know, it has been so long, they may have retired by now."

Edwin McCain has been called, "A great American romantic" among many other complimentary things by many people, media outlets and peers. His 1998 mega-hit, "I'll Be" and hits such as "I Could Not Ask For More" thrust him into the spotlight but the call of family and the responsibility that goes along with those things caused him to walk away from the craft he loves.

"Walking away is probably a little bit too dramatic," he said quickly. "I just went back to being the old Indie artist I always was; I just sort of shifted the way I was doing things. We were still playing 70 to 100 gigs a year, I was just doing them in seated listening rooms. I drive my own bus and I have an old bus from '99 and it's not sexy but it gets the job done and we know how to do that; right? I did that for a million years before I signed with Atlantic and the Atlantic days, those four albums; I'd say that was probably the most unreal part of my life. Everything is sort of overblown, the budgets are bigger than they need to be and all the things that are surrounding you are inflated to kind of an unrealistic and unsustainable level and then when you leave that, you have to go back to being realistic and sustainable. I can sustain our thing as long as I'm willing to drive the bus and we're willing to work at a rate where everybody can make a good living that's not over the top. I don't drive new cars, I don't have extravagant tastes, it's imminently doable as long as you keep your expectations reasonable. I see a lot of people, especially younger musicians and I don't know if this is true or not because I don't know what the current market is but I see a lot of people complain that there is no way to make a living as a musician anymore and I'm not sure that's true. I know a lot of local musicians that make a perfectly nice living playing local and regional gigs. I think it's hard to make it into that stratospheric level that people see and idolize but that's always been hard.I think if you're willing to play all of the gigs and you don't have any kind of gig snobbery, you're willing to put in the time and play with wild abandon and be joyful in whatever you're doing; there's a gig and it's sustainable."

So, perhaps "Walking away" was not the proper terminology. He was however, operating "Heavy equipment" and no, that doesn't mean amplification but it was during these moments where his new release "Lucky" somewhat came to be; well, that and with a little bit of a push from his friend, producer and fellow musician Lee Brice.

"Lucky," it has been 15 years in the making. I've just kinda been raising teenagers and just been out here playing my little shows. My mindset has been this whole time; I've got 10 albums worth of stuff but when I go to play shows, I kinda already know what people want to hear and the first rule of show business is "Give the people what they want" and it's not new stuff. I used to tease my crowds, I would walk out on stage and go, "Tonight, I'm just gonna play all new songs" and they would go, "Nooooo!" They have their songs that they like and I'm the same way. When I go hear AC/DC, I want to hear "Back In Black" and "For Those About To Rock" and if they want to put in a new song, just do it at the beginning of the show and then just play the songs I love and we're good. So, the idea of putting out a new record just wasn't really in my wheelhouse and Lee kept calling me saying, "C'mon, let's make a record." Finally, I was running an excavator at the time and I was sitting in this 50,000 pound machine moving dirt and I thought, you know what? It might be fun to make another record. So, he talked me into it and here I am again, back in the actual music business instead of living in Indie land; I'm signed with Sony and it's all distributed through the Orchard."

"Lee actually produced my latest record and I didn't realize this until years into our friendship that he was a huge fan of mine," he went on. "He had been to tons of shows as a teenager and he counts me as one of his biggest influences. I always wondered why he was so hyped on making a record with me and it finally kinda came out that he actually was a big fan. So, it was a lot of fun making a record with somebody who is a fan of what you do and plus, he's a singer. So, when you're in there doing vocals, he would go, "No, do that thing that you do" and he'd remind me of something I used to do and he would remember more of how to make me, me than I would; it was a lot of fun that way. His production chops are unrivaled, he's a great producer on top of being a great musician; he's excellent."

McCain may be an "Influence" and his songs and material have been used by contestants on shows such as "The Voice" and "American Idol" as well as recorded by Justin Bieber and Charlie Puth but Edwin likes to keep things simple and in perspective, which is why the "Move to Nashville where the best players are found" to be discovered theory isn't a popular one for him.

"That's a complete falicy because Danny, you know this from being in bands; it's not the top notch players that get the gigs," he stated with conviction. "The guys that get the gigs have the best hang. I can't tell you how many times I've taken a less technical player with a better hang because the time together onstage is almost meaningless compared to the amount of time you have to spend doing all of the other stuff; as long as somebody has pocket, I could give a crap about chops. None of that matters, it's hang over everything. I hear all of these kids with technical ability on guitar and they are astonishlingly great mathematically and I'll say, "OK, what you're doing is mind-blowing from a technical standpoint. Now listen to Jimmy Herring play and tell me why it's great. What he has figured out how to do is emote with the guitar and there is a difference." There is a difference between being technically proficient and being emotional as a player. The only way you can do that is in front of an audience because that's the only time you can understand if that exchange is occurring. So many kids have been in their bedrooms playing into their social media feed and while I think it's a great way to get your name out there and promote yourself, nothing beats busking or a live gig or all of the things that require you to push up against some adversity because that's the sharpening stone really. I'm sure I sound like the crotchety old man but I believe that. You've got to go out there and bleed for it and the other part too; the van and trailer days, all of the younger acts that I've ever worked with, I'm like, "Listen man, you won't tell any stories other than from this period. The only stories you'll tell come from the first 10 years of you doing this. The rest of it, if you succeed is kind of gravy. The only fun part of it is the first 10 years when you're out here stealing baloney from the grocery store so you can eat; that's what it is (Laughs)."

"There is this misunderstanding that magically, you're granted the keys to the kingdom or all of a sudden, you get pushed up to the front of the pack and you can cross the finish line before anybody else; there is no finish line," he continued. "None of us are guaranteed anything other than the grind. So, unless you love all of the things; don't do this. If what you love is walking out there and having the crowd cheer for you and you play for 60 to 90 minutes; if that's all you're in this for, then pick something else, go sing karaoke on the weekends because that's not what this is. This is all of the other things and the payoff is the 90 minutes on stage but you've got to love all of it. I used to open for B.B. King a long time ago when I was 18 or 19 and he said, "You know, I play the shows for free. What I get paid for is all the other stuff" and I get that but unless you're willing to roll up your sleeves and do all of the other things and find a way to enjoy all of the other things, then those other 90 minutes don't belong to you. Honestly, all of the people that I look up to who have been in this industry for 50 years have that mindset. Warren Haynes was a huge influence and a big help to me early in my career and he has always been that way. We toured with the Allman Brothers for years and before that, I was opening for The Aquarium Rescue Unit and Oteil (Burbridge) and Jimmy (Herring) and the Colonel just instilled in me this work ethic and dedication to the life that always superceded any concept of success, fame or recognition. Those three things took a backseat to focusing on the life and dedication to being great. I don't know how else to say it, I just had such good role models early on; I mean, we were opening for Bob Weir for God's sake (laughs), talk about the king of dedicating your life to it; that was it."

Those last two paragraphs are possibly the best explanation of why musicians born before the year 2000 are how they are and who they are because far too many individuals in today's climate and not just those who are creatives; far too many lack the patience and work ethic needed to succeed. The above statements are like a breath of fresh air and something every musician or entertainer both young and old needs to read and/or hear.

When McCain started off, he was the student and now he's the teacher but one thing is definite; he's sure a favorite of his friend and road mate.

"I'm playing with Lee. He has a big tour called, "You, Me & My Guitar" and it's just him on stage and he has all of his guitars that he's had throughout his career and they all have stories attached to them; it's sort of a songwriter, storyteller type thing. When I was doing my record with him, he was like, "You need to come out and play some of these shows with me" and I was like, "Alright, OK, I'll come" and I just thought I'd come and do like a guest appearance but then he said, "Play some songs at the beginning." So, I come out and play for about 30 minutes and then I sit in with him on his set; it's just such a nice thing to do. I can't say enough good things about him, he's such a good guy. I want to say he's a good kid but he's 40 (Laughs)! He's a grown-ass-man but I've really enjoyed it. He has been very, very generous with me with his success and honoring me in that way. I'm happy to be able to come out and play in front of his fans, I'm happy to be a part. I'm also on tour playing my own shows and then I'll be out on tour with Train at the end of August and going through September."
