Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...2/22/24

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 02/22/2024

"Things are going great man," says an elated Mikey V of Chains Over Razors. "We've been working this record with Deko and just rocking the charts. Our third single made the top twenty, which is fantastic and we're really excited about that. The first single hit number nineteen, the second hit number fifteen and this one is being received well. The album is self-titled, "Chains Over Razors;" our "Led Zeppelin" route for that (laughs) and it came out last March, we've been releasing singles since April or Mid-March of 2023; the year has gone by fast."

Ripping up stages has been Chains Over Razors M.O. since their inception. With their melodic style, dynamic vocals, searing guitar along with pounding drums, the band has continued their way up those aforementioned charts as well as an ascent to larger stage shows.

Recently, guitarist Mikey V. with twin brother and drummer Andy V. elaborated on the band's last album; released through Deko Entertainment and what's happening with the group down the road.

"We had been hitting it hard and playing a lot of shows and then took some time off," began Mikey V. "We released "Broken Home" as our second single and the third was "Megalomaniac;" we wanted that to hit the radio before all of the Christmas music took over so we released it early (laughs). We're under Deko, we signed with them at the end of 2021. We were still dealing with the pandemic and we were all just trying to figure out when was an appropriate time to release an album because everybody was still not sure where things were headed because as you know, the industry was the first to shut down and the last to open up. We didn't want to put it out too early and then not be able to work the album so we pushed it back to 2022 which worked out for all of us. Bruce (Pucciarello) and Charlie (Calv) are great; you can't do any better than partnering up with a bunch of paesanos (laughs). Charlie is a brilliant keyboardist, it's insane. My brother and I saw him here in Illinois at the Arcada Theatre and just watched him tear it up; man he should be with Dream Theater the way he plays (laughs). Both him and Bruce are so nice and it's rare to be affiliated with a company that is open to ideas, takes your phone calls or will call you back and wants to constantly brainstorm ideas, which for us, has been an amazing thing and for us to be part of that; it's something you don't experience when you sign with any label. With Bruce and Charlie, it's Zoom meetings, phone calls and emails; it's great! I mean, it's rare, artist development doesn't really exist in most companies today and they are all about it. We love that and we are thankful to be part of the Deko family and just to see that Deko name is so cool (laughs)."

"We are still a three piece power trio," he continued. "My twin brother is our drummer, we have a new lead singer on this album, his name is William Mullen who we met in the studio. Our last lead singer was going through some hard times in his personal life and it came to the point where we had to part ways but we're still great friends and since then, he has been able to turn things around and we respected and supported him with whatever he had to do to take care of his family. We met William and we were like, hey man, we love your vocals, you have one hell of a range; you want to jump in and jump into this fire and work this world of madness with us? He said, "Yeah, I'm in, let's do it." So, we just started writing, we performed some older material with him and then went in the studio and started recording in 2019. We started writing and recording at the same time; the old Aerosmith old school way, capture what you wrote right at the moment. Then obviously, the pandemic hit and we were locked out of the studio for seven or eight months because they deemed studios non-essential. So, it was like, OK; how do we write during this time and make sure we continue to move forward? We had ways to discuss ideas so that when we were able to get back in we were full force and of course, Carmine Appice was the executive producer on this album as well and having him and his perspective on board was a huge plus. Writing and just working with him is always fantastic; he's brilliant; nicest guy ever and he pushed us to our limits and beyond. He always comes in with an outside perspective which we love because it's easy to get lost when you're locked in a place without windows (laughs)."

A common thread throughout was the lightheartedness of Mikey V. His laughter and outlook bodes well for a band whose star is rising but like all who have been in a band or have dealt with venue owners and promoters; Mikey and Andy V. found it is not always fun.

"We did acquire a booking agent earlier in 2022 and right now we're working the circuit," said Mikey with a tone of relief. "We did some festivals in 2022 and tours have been talked about, we have a lot of festivals being worked out for this year 2024 but for now we're just working the album and performing it live here in the Midwest just to keep ourselves in front of people and perform the songs for them. In the meantime, we are always writing to have new material ready and we'll probably put out another single soon just to fire it up a little bit more as we lead into festival season. Festivals have really been our focus, there are three or four we are talking to right now and maybe a couple more but we wait on them as they are locking in budgets, artists they are talking to, dealing with security with their states and what not; it's a waiting pattern and in the meantime we're gonna just keep kicking ass at the venues in the Midwest (laughs)."

"It's crazy that venues want the artists to do all the work these days," he went on; "OK, we're in Illinois and you're in North Carolina; do you want me to drive there and put up posters? The social media game has changed a lot of that. I remember, even 15 years ago, you went out and put fliers at venues and the return showed itself and now with the 10 second A.D.D. where people just flip through things where it's like; what's going on in these 500 different areas? It does make it more difficult and back then you called the talent buyers or different venues and you spoke to them on the phone and you'd lock it in or if you were within range of driving, you'd meet them, shake their hands and they'd look at their calendar and write you in. Today, with email, if you bombard them with emails to try and get a response; they might think it's spam. So, that makes it weird too and being an artist and trying to book yourself that's harder; they never really want to talk to the artist. So, hopefully, having a booking agent has changed that for us and we're taken a lot more seriously when the emails go out as far as getting their responses. That's handy but there is always still that hiccup of, hey man, we emailed you a week ago or three weeks ago; do you need an artist to fill a slot? Before we got our agent, Steve at Music Insider Entertainment who I met doing an interview and we hit it off and he's doing a fantastic job; before he was in the picture, I'd email places and they'd respond, "Hey, we don't want to deal with the band members." Seriously? OK; how do we go about booking if you won't deal with a member of the group? So, having Steve come into the picture was a game changer and he has a lot of contacts and so the seriousness has changed for us on that front so, thank God!"
