Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...12/8/22

By Danny Coleman

“That was an incredible experience, we were over in Europe for three and one-half weeks in June and just the response we got from everybody was incredible. I mean, we played some amazing shows and amazing festivals. We did Download, we did Rock am Ring, we played Belsonic with Iron Maiden and Airbourne and Shinedown; I mean, we just had some incredible shows and the reception from the crowd was amazing." says Tempt front man and vocalist Zach Allen. "They were just ready to party; they were awesome and we had an awesome time; it was great to meet the other bands. We got to talk with some of the guys from Shinedown and Airbourne and just kind of sharing stories and everything; it was just a tremendous experience and so exciting. We can't wait to get back out there, as soon as we came back, we were like, alright; when are we getting back there?  Because it was just a dream, it really was, it was a wonderful reception and everybody was really great to us; we cannot be happier with how it all turned out.”

New York City based and ready to rock, Tempt took to the road and as Allen mentioned, played to very receptive and large crowds and even though they have hit the ground running, there is something that is odd about this early success; they've accomplished it without putting out an album yet. This is something that even Allen finds interesting but none the less, he and the band are thrilled with it and the formula they've used to reach a rapidly growing fan base.

“Right?" Laughed Allen, "Yeah, the album is slated to come out in late spring 2023; we know the title but I can't give that away just yet. We have everything ready; this record has been completed since right before COVID started so, we've just been kind of sitting on it and we released a single, “Living Dangerous” featuring Dorothy that's on the record and we have a couple more singles that will be coming out soon; one in January and obviously we just put out our Christmas song so, we're going to have some single releases leading up to the album, the full length album and we're just so excited to put it out and yeah, when we were on the road we didn't have an album and what made it even more amazing is that people still seemed to know some of the words and by the second or third chorus, they were singing along; these fans were fantastic.”

Not waiting for Spring, the band has not only their planned single releases but has just released their version of the Billy Squier holiday classic, "Christmas Is The Time To Say "I Love You" and did so at the urging of Squire himself; through guitarist Harrison Marcello.

“I don’t know if you know this but Billy Squier is Harrison’s Godfather. So, when he first played us the song; we hadn't heard it and he played it for us and we really liked it. We just loved the vibe that it had, the inclusivity; just the big sing-a-long and everything about it. We definitely wanted to bring it up a few notches so we sped up the tempo a little bit, we added more guitar solos and stuff and the video is so much fun because it really captures the spirit of the holidays in New York City which is just the best and it's our hometown. So, we were able I think, to at least really capture that spirit and the joy of the holidays and it's just such a great song; it really is and when Harrison played it for us, we were instantly like, oh, we’ve gotta do this. So, it came together really well and we're very happy about it. We  had Shawn Pelton from SNL play drums on it because our drummer Nick Burrows at the time was away and wasn't able to do so. So, we called up Shawn and he was fantastic as well and it was an overall great experience.”

“I enjoyed learning the history of the song and it was so interesting seeing that video; that was so cool and it's just such a great fun song," he continued with obvious enthusiasm. "We just think that people will enjoy singing it with their families and we're releasing a lot of content on our social media channels. I think Harrison just put one out today teaching you how to play the solo and we have some other sing-a-longs coming up; it's just such a fun holiday song.”

The re-make is not only out on audio but as Allen mentioned; it has a corresponding video which shows just how they embraced the song.

“Everyone is in a fun spirit in the video; we dressed up in our Santa hats and we got to play with someone's dog, which is always a plus and that made it into the video and we just had some great interactions with people. Shooting all over the city; Hudson Yards, near Radio City Music Hall; just kind of hitting all of the iconic New York landmarks, obviously the tree in Rockefeller Center; it's New York in the holidays and there's nothing like it.”

Allen says that the tune can be found on all of the usual streaming services and the video as well but also adds that they took great care when undertaking this project; wanting to pay respect to the original while "Bumping" the song up a notch or two.

“So, it’s everywhere, streaming services, Apple Music, Spotify, you name it; Amazon Music. The video is on our YouTube page and it's also on the Better Noise Music’s YouTube page. The video is really fun like I said so, it's really available everywhere. We posted it on our social channels; everything is TemptBand. So, whether it's Twitter, Facebook or YouTube it's all over the place and it's really wherever you prefer to listen to music. We didn't want to deviate much from the original because it was such a good song as it was and we didn't feel like we needed to do too much changing it around. Even the arrangement is so good; we just wanted to bump it up a bit and showcase some more of Harrisons playing.”

So, the questions remain; did Marcello feel a little pressure recreating such an iconic Christmas song due to his family ties and has Squire heard the finished product?

“Well, he was the one that brought the song to us so, I think he was really excited to see it all come to life and especially the video that goes along with it; it's just so perfect. So, he was very excited about it and I'm sure there was a little pressure on his end with Billy being his godfather and not wanting to disappoint him or anything like that but no, I know Billy has heard it and Harrison was super happy with it. We're all happy with how it came out and we're just excited to release more music."

With the single release of the song and Spring several months away; what are they up to in the immediate future?

"I did want to mention that we have another single coming out in January, it is our version of “We Will Rock You” and that will be coming out officially. We have a video with snippets from our tour in Europe which is such a fun video. I can't wait for everybody to see that and that'll be coming out on January 13. First the video and then the single will be coming out on January 27 and then like I said earlier, leading up to the release of the record we have more singles coming out so, it's an exciting time.”
