Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...12/21/23

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 12/21/2023

"Yeah, just busting it out and trying to have some fun. I've been doing some shows, was down in Florida and did a show in Boca and near Tampa and I released my fifth album," said guitarist Will Johns as he talked about his latest release, "Yin & Yang," a recent run of shows and more. "I've been out on my own, I had Tom Hamilton and played with Bernie Rose and some other guys; I did a private event with some young players, I did another black tie private event all in advance of the release in October. The single "Ruthless" is out along with a video which you can find on YouTube and all of the usual streaming platforms."

The term, "Out on my own" varies from artist to artist and person to person and some may find it hard to believe that Johns, who is the child of actress/model Paula Boyd and producer Andy Johns; which makes him the nephew of Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Mick Fleetwood and Glyn Johns, can ever entirely be on his own.

Having worked with and shared a stage with multiple industry heavyweights; Johns always has talent available to him but this time he truly is "Out on his own," busy promoting the album, working with varied projects and prepping for a Spring of 2024 tour.

"I've been working on it for a while, basically it came out during the pandemic," he began as he started with the new record and its title. "We couldn't do anything unless you went on your computer and we all know the computer runs on the binary language of ones and zero and also with all of the delerium came a little bit of polarization. You were either pro-vaccine or anti-vaccine, you were a Trump supporter or anti-Trump supporter or you were either this or a that; everything seemed to be pretty black or white. People would be talking to each other and then without even getting into the conversation, it was decided which one you were. You were either a zero or a one, a this or a that or whatever. So, there didn't seem to be much room for conversation and since that time, I've lost some really dear friends who have passed on and this album represents some of the feelings, the ideas and notions that I have come up with or experienced since then. So, hence the title "Yin & Yang" which is kind of a holistic way of looking at that duality in everything and that is the concept really. It has amazing cover art done by Charlie Carroll who is an artist in L.A. and it kind of has a where's Wally or where's Willy if you'd like vibe to it; there's lots going on on the cover, you have to try all of the different people and hidden words and stuff like that."

Given his pedigree, his involvement with a Cream and a Clapton tribute along with his last release, Johns at times gets classified as a solid blues artist but he quickly points out that is not the case.

"The last album was "Blues Daddy" and of course that was what it said on the tin. This one doesn't really fall into any particular genre, it certainly isn't a blues album. The songs are all my own compositions, some of them are co-writes but I wrote them all. So, it's all original music, one might have a bit of a reggae sort of vibe without being reggae, one is kind of hard blues rock with a bit of a thumping four on the floor; I'd like to think that it's original music. I didn't find myself trying to avoid anything, I had the freedom to do this exactly how I wanted to do it; if that makes sense. Using the sounds that I wanted to get into the songs and get into the vibe of the song rather than trying to go for a particular sound. There was definitely some experimentation there while at the same time none of it is rocket science and there can't be more than four or five chords to any of it; there is no jazz on this one (laughs)."

As was mentioned before, Johns has music royalty pretty much at his disposal but that doesn't stop him from discovering new and talented friends to perpetuate his undertakings.

"I had Noah East play some beautiful organ and keyboard, Hammond organ and piano sounds on it; I've been working with him recently in the Cream of Clapton Band," he went on about those who guested on "Yin & Yang." "We are going to go on the road again next year, we have a tour of Germany in the Spring. I love working with Noah, he has a really great sense of musicality, we've got Chris Gale on the drums and Richard Sadler is playing bass."

"I'll be back in April and do a run of shows around then to promote the album, I'll play some of the "Blues Daddy" stuff and then I'm sure that I'll be out again with Cream of Clapton along with Noah East. Eric (Clapton) had his Crossroads Festival which I wasn't able to attend because I needed to get back and do some work on promoting my own album but I am an ambassador for "Turn Up For Recovery" and we raise awareness for the Crossroads Center in Antigua."

Yes, he will be back in April once again with eight dates currently booked in Florida and his camp is attempting to add more as he continues to promote the new record and to discover more about Will Johns, Cream of Clapton and more, please visit https://willjohns.com/
