Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...12/14/23

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 12/14/2023

"I grew up listening to everything with all the kids; rock music, folk music, I love folk music. In high school and junior high, I'd play my guitar and sing folk songs; I just love music. I'd sing with the choir, swing groups in school and when I started recording, I really didn't think that I had to quit singing different styles so, my albums were full of different things as well as country songs," said famed Country Music star, Crystal Gayle as she recently discussed her music, family Christmases, upcoming New Jersey appearances and yes; that magnificent trademark hair. "Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan, I mean, that style as well; there is so much good music out there. Many people have asked, "Who is your favorite singer?" There are so many really good singers out there; it's great."

Crystal Gayle isn't just one of "Many good singers out there," and never has been, she is recognized as and always has been one of the all time best and rightfully so. With countless Grammy, CMA, American Music and Academy of Country Music  Awards and nominations along with multiple hits; she is considered a music icon.

On December 14 and December 15 she is bringing her brand of holiday cheer to audiences here in the Garden State as she wraps up and puts a bow on her "A Crystal Christmas" tour with shows at The Landis Theater in Vineland and at The Newton Theatre in Newton, NJ.

"A Crystal Christmas" is really the name of my Christmas album that I recorded back a few years ago, it's only been a couple," she began with a laugh. "I had so much fun doing the album, one side was with an orchestra, a symphony with beautiful strings and the other side was with my band, the wonderful musicians that I've used through the years. So, it was just an exciting time to do this and we go out there and we have fun and it shows; that is the main part; having fun and not dragging in all of our troubles and worries. We're there to forget that and rest a little bit."

When speaking with Gayle, it is very easy to hear and feel the fun and relaxed tones that permeate her words. Her laid back approach and calm demeanor, along with that unmistakable voice are more than charming; they are a soothing antidote during one of the more stressful times of the year. So, what were Christmases like for Crystal growing up in what was and is a large family and does that excitement continue today?

"Well, Christmas when I was growing up; I am the last of eight children, my sister Loretta (Lynn) is the second, there's four boys and four girls and it was so great to have my brothers and sisters come home at holiday time. Christmas wasn't about all of the presents, yes, we loved presents but it's not like today where you can have so many; we got what we needed and maybe one toy (laughs). It was family time, I'd see my mother cooking and people would stop by; family, friends, all day long and her door was always open."

"Oh there is always the excitement and as I've aged there is the excitement for my kids and my grandkids and their family; you love to see what excites them about the holiday. We used to put up loads of lights outside (laughs); we still do some but it's every little thing; even the parties that people would have or those who would come by at lunch or stop by the workplaces. Publishing companies used to have little receptions at the holiday time and I'm sure they still do but the whole of Nashville comes alive."

These two Jersey shows and one on December 17 in New York end this current run as she prepares to head home for the holiday. With such a long and accomplished career; do things ever get "Old" for her? Does she still feel the thrill that comes from being in front of a live audience and given she is in the home stretch; what can those attending the shows expect?

"The show is usually around an hour-and-a-half and I do enjoy it and when the time comes; I'll know when to put my feet up," she stated with confidence. "There are times when you're tired because the travel can be hard but we try to keep it easier; early on we flew a lot, we'd get up at four a.m., we'd do a show that night and not get any sleep but you can do that because you were younger (laughs). Like I said, it is really to have fun, we're out there to entertain and not make it hard on us or anyone else; from backstage to all of the theaters, you don't want to go in wanting things and requesting things that you shouldn't; you just want to make it easy and have fun, like I said, "F U N" fun. (laughs)."

"The band that travels with me is bass, drums, saxophone, guitar, piano; we don't have a symphony or anything like that but I have been very lucky to have great people as well as great musicians, I feel very lucky. It has been a while since I've been up your way but we used to go through that area quite often in the past and enjoyed it. We'll be doing parts of the album but of course we do hits like, "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" or "Talking In Your Sleep," certain songs that have made my career but we mix things in and out depending on the night and really, we just hope that everyone enjoys it."

In a past press release, Crystal said that she "Never tires of singing "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" and when asked, she readily agreed.

"That song was written by Richard Leigh and he wrote this great song that says so much and I always say so little because it's not this wordy song, it has so much heart in it those words that he wrote. He is a great writer, he wrote my first number one (Hit) "I'll Get Over You." So, we sort of connected (laughs); my first number one and then my platinum selling album and single."

Crystal's trademark, her lengthy head of hair was what made her easily identifiable and for a period of time spawned years of Halloween costumes as many envied and admired its beauty; is it still long today?

"Well, it's not as long as it used to be but it is still down there past the knees and it's something that is so hard to cut because it has been a part of me all of these years," she said once again with a laugh. "All of the girls in my family are very lucky to have hair that would grow really fast and we attribute it to our American Indian blood; Cherokee and we're very proud of it. I could not fix hair, so it was so easy for me to wash it and let it dry and I could hit the stage (Laughs). I have definitely through the years thinned it and stuff because it was heavy but as I said, it is part of me."
