"Here I Come" is the title and one of the singles I've released. "Here I Come," if you listen to the song, it's really about hanging in there when things go bad, it's about grit and determination and when your time comes; go for it! I guess the double meaning of it could be, "Here I Come," it's my first album at age 55; so it has kind of a double meaning to it. Having never done this before, I sought out Erin Anderson out of Nashville and I had started talking to her about three or four years ago and I sent her a bunch of demos and I said, "Hey, I'm looking to get into this as a solo artist" and she said, "Sounds good but the first step; let's get the album recorded" and so, I took the demos and started looking for a producer I could work with up in Nashville. I found Shawn Byrne and I feel like I just really got lucky. I talked to a few others but he and I really hit it off personally and musically, I was really impressed by what he was doing and I'd heard good things from other folks. I took all of my demos up there, we basically agreed on the tempos for all of them, laid them out, he did a basic guitar track; he's also an amazing guitar player. We laid them out and I did all of the vocals and then we started layering other instruments. There are strings on there, which I've always loved, he did the guitar and then he brought in a cellist, Brian Sutherland, who is amazing and will be playing live shows with me. He brought in Andrea Young, a violin player who played some amazing fiddle parts; I tried to get her to come play with me but I think she's touring with Rod Stewart now; amazingly, she opted for Rod instead of me (Laughs). The amazing thing; I know you're in New Jersey and don't know if you know much about Nashville but it's an amazingly little, close knit community there. There are these amazingly talented musicians and Shawn is just well-connected and brought in some amazing folks to come in and play and sing on the record. Musically, the session musicians; I don't think there is a stronger place on the planet."
While viewing this as his time to, "Go for it," he spent the time making the record in Nashville as well as also performing in "Music City" but he at first hesitated, then conceded that it is at times a struggle to separate oneself from all of the other talented people who flock there.
"There are so many talented artists; it's kind of like a double-edged sword," he said with some trepidation. "There are so many talented artists, it's hard but if you're talented, you've kind of got to go there because that's probably where the opportunity is for you to play and get on records and so forth but at the same time, there is a ton of competition there; it's just loaded with massive amounts of talent. So, yeah, if you want to stand out, it's not easy but that's where it's happening."
Now after "Here I Come" was released back in the beginning of November, Slaw has plans to branch out a bit as he begins to do shows in support of the record.
"I think I mentioned earlier, I hadn't played a note in a couple of years when we decided to release this album. So, I've been rehearsing with a new band I put together, like I said, I've got a couple of folks who play with me played on it and we had an album release party in November and we are playing gigs beyond that; some interesting, quality gigs outside of Nashville to your point and so, we are looking forward to getting out and playing live."
