Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...11/9/23

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 11/09/2023

"Well, it's 12 songs and it's somewhat of a cycle of songs about the neighborhood that I live in in San Francisco; specifically it's more generally about the state of the world, my neighborhood, the forces of gentrification that have affected it and then the usual love lost and human interest stuff," laughs songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Tom Heyman as he talked about his new album, "24th Street Blues" and the illustrated songbook that accompanies it.

"I live in the Mission District," he began, "Which is, if you are familiar with San Francisco, is a little bit on the east side of the city, sort of on the bay side in a largely mostly Latino working class neighborhood and has been for a long time. We've lived in the same apartment for I think; close to our twenty-third or twenty-fourth year in the same pad which is kind of a miracle in San Francisco given the high cost of living here; we just kind of lucked into a situation and we sort of stuck it out. So, here we are and we watched the change, especially with the sort of second crazy tech boom which started around 2010 or so and San Francisco sort of underwent this massive change; it's a boom or bust city and always has been going back to The Gold Rush. This was sort of a second tech gold rush and the city really bent over backwards to invite a lot of big companies into town and it is like Silicon Valley exported their own housing crisis to San Francisco. They were running their own sort of private bus service through the city; they called it the, "Twitter Tax Break"  because when they invited Twitter and a bunch of other tech companies into town they didn't have to pay any payroll tax and it was sort of a really shortsighted thing because it put a lot of pressure onto an already pressure cooked environment; it was just interesting to watch it happen around me."

With songs such as, "White Econoline," "The Mission Is On Fire," "Sonny Jim," one can close their eyes and feel what Heyman is conveying in the above paragraph; even without the fabulous well-done illustrations.

A native of New York who spent a decade or so in Philadelphia, Heyman sort of bounced around before finding roots in California; including even here in New Jersey but in his mind he will always be an "East Coaster."

"I grew up in North Jersey, both sides of my family are from Brooklyn but we moved to Montclair in the late '60s. On the music side of things, I was signed to a record company called East Side Digital which was a subsidiary of Rykodisc which was the label that put out all of the Bowie and Elvis Costello reissues. They were based in Philadelphia, Minneapolis and New York so they had like three offices. They were the first company that really got the thing that you could reissue LPs in sort of a deluxe way on CD and make a pile of money; again (laughs)."

Now any musician above the age of approximately 45 surely remembers heading to the local music store and purchasing sheet music or catalogs of songs in things called "Songbooks." Most came with titles beginning with the words, "The Complete (Insert band name here) Songbook." So, when Heyman set out to do something "Different" with this release; he flashed back to his youth and then enlisted the help of his wife Deirdre

" I sort of got the idea because my wife is an oil painter who teaches painting and drawing at University of California Davis at San Francisco City College. I got the idea for the songbook a number of years ago when I did an interview for "Acoustic Guitar Magazine" and they filmed a video of me and a buddy of mine playing a couple of songs in their studio. Then they took a song that I played and transcribed it in the magazine and when I got the issue and saw the interview and the song transcribed on the page, I thought; that's amazing. So, when I was thinking about making this record, I wanted to do something different and I wasn't sure that I was going to do vinyl again because vinyl is heavy, so expensive and fragile and I thought great, the trifecta," he said with a large laugh.

"I thought, I'm going to do something different and maybe I'll make a songbook. I thought back to when I was originally learning to play guitar back in New Jersey when I was like 15 or 16 years old and you could go to the music store and buy the songbook of the artist whose songs you wanted to learn. Let's say that you wanted to learn how "Harvest" or "Heart Of Gold" by Neil Young you could go to the store and buy the songbook that Warner Brothers put out to accompany "Harvest" and it looked exactly like the album with the same graphics and every song was transcribed in it with chord charts and lead sheets and stuff. So, I had that and I also had a book that combined "Working Man's Dead" and "American Beauty" into one songbook. They were the two Grateful Dead records from the late '60s and early '70s that are considered their classic back-to-back sort of folk rock LPs. That book was designed by Alton Kelly and Stanley Mouse who were the famous San Francisco poster artists and it was this beautiful nine by twelve cloth bound 200 page book where every song is transcribed in like a calligrapher's hand; it was done by actual designers. Every song had a piece of poster art that went with it. "Uncle John's Band" has its own incredible poster and "High Time" has an incredible poster; there's the illustration and then you'd turn the page and there was the transcription and then you';d get to the next song; I still have my copy of that book from when I was a teenager. I thought, maybe I can do something like that and so I decided that I was going to get my wife to illustrate every song and make a painting for each song in the book specific to the song and not tell her what it was going to be; she could sort of listen to the lyrics and come up with something and she did and it came out beautifully. Now, with print on demand, you can make a run of books cheaper than a run of vinyl believe it or not; it's less because it's just printing. So, I thought, I can do this thing and make the experience of buying this record sort of like an extra value added thing and it's priced the same as a vinyl LP and including a CD with that; CDs are so cheap that you can get a CD and a download and a book for the same price. It was something to have for the merch table and also a way to collaborate with my wife and it came out really well; I did have to browbeat her into doing it (laughs)."

For most artists, the pandemic of 2020 was detrimental to their careers and finances but not for Tom. He took the impending doom and turned it into the finished product we see today.

"The thing about this record is that I got the finished mixes on March 11, 2020, two days before the world locked down. I was like, oh my God, I'm not gonna put this record out while the world is locked down because if you're an indie artist, it's really hard to sell stuff if you're not selling it out of the trunk of your car. So, while we were in the midst of the lockdown I was like, let's do this thing, let me have you illustrate all of these songs. So, I got the transcriptions of the songs done first; I had a guy who did that for me. They were mostly done by the managing editor of "Acoustic Guitar Magazine," he did the transcriptions for me. I can read music but I can't really write it; for somebody who literally went to music school I can read it a little bit but writing it is like a bridge too far for me (laughs). So, I got somebody to do all of the transcriptions for me and then my wife illustrated it and then we figured out a way to put the whole book together and then do a print run of it. It was a pretty steep learning curve but it's not like there was a whole lot else going on and I just decided that I wasn't going to rush into releasing it; I was going to have it all together. Then at the last minute, I saw on the news that vinyl had surpassed CD sales for the first time and I was like, shit, now I guess I'm gonna have to do a run of vinyl again (laughs). Oddly enough, that coincided with a service I've used out here in the past called Pirates Press and their return times on vinyl are just incredible; they are really able to turn it around faster than a lot of places. So, the last minute decision to do vinyl was months ago and here I am sitting in my living room full of vinyl; I'm not one of those who released a record but is still waiting for the vinyl."

Currently, Heyman is out on the road promoting "24th Street Blues" and on Friday November 17 he returns to Philadelphia with a 6 p.m. show at Fergie's Pub located at 1214 Sansom Street in Center City. He will be opening for some "Old friend and WXPN fave John Train" and more information can be found at https://www.fergies.com/events.
