Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...1/18/24

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 01/18/2024

"I was a radio DJ when I was younger and now I am in Paris, France; maybe you will come here one day," laughed The Salt Collective's Stephane Schuck as he gave a bit of the band's history prior to their two area shows this week in Pennsylvania and Saturday January 20 at Jersey City's White Eagle Hall

Beginning only as, "Salt," with a "Core group" of Benoit Lautridou and Fred Quentin, the band has evolved into a collaborative effort of musicians, friends and influences and as Schuck explains; it has been quite a journey for all involved but perhaps more so for him.

"Salt was my first band in France with my two friends and I was the guitarist and we were something of a power trio without a singer which was disappointing because we all sing very bad, but it's actually a wonderful story," he began with a large laugh. "As I told you, I was a radio DJ and I was a big fan of a band in San Francisco called Game Theory whose leader was Scott Miller and after them we met Loud Family and so, I wrote a letter to Scott Miller saying that I'm on French radio and that I am a big fan of your music; can we do an interview for the radio here in France? At the time, I was in Normandy in a very little town and he answered me and said, "Yes, no problem" and that was really fantastic for me. So, back then, there was no internet, so I sent him a tape with my questions and he recorded himself and his answers and sent me back the tape and then I broadcasted it on the radio; it was a wonderful moment and then a few years after that, I went to the U.S. and I met him in San Francisco. So, it was really a story of a music fan; when I met him I told him I also play music. He gave me his guitar and said, "OK, play me your songs" and that was a big moment for me you can imagine. He liked the songs that I wrote and he proposed that we work together and that is how we got a foot in America. Through him I met other musicians and then I wrote songs with Scott and unfortunately, as you may know, he took his own life in 2013 and then there was a posthumous album about him ("Supercalifragile") because I had worked on those songs with him and there were four songs on it done by Scott and I. Then I was connected with the dB's and that is perhaps the most beautiful story because when I was a teenager, I was a huge fan of Chris Stamey and the dB's. They were my favorite band ever; even before the Beatles. I grew up with their records and the sound of Chris Stamey and after our first album, I was looking for  someone to produce the second album and I was put in touch with Chris. So, I sent him the songs and he said, "OK, I'm OK to produce" and that was how the band was created. Then it was not Salt anymore, it became The Salt Collective because we had so many people work on this record, it was totally crazy. We had all of the dB's and people like Matthew Caws, Mitch Easter, Susan Cowsill and Pat Sansone, Anton Barbeau, Richard Lloyd of Television and Faith Jones;  it was a dream come true, a miracle (laughs). So, I got to work with Chris Stamey, it was like a dream come true and we've really developed a friendship and I'm a fan of all the people on this record and suddenly I'm making music with them; it was incredible."

The result of all of these pieces coming together is their latest album simply titled, "Life." The title may be short and sweet but to Schuck and the others, there is inspiration and longevity in its meaning.

From the beginning to the end, Schuck was battling a life threatening illness which led him to say that the album was, "Written and composed with the sword of Damocles" over his head; in other words, Schuck knew he was in a precarious situation or more commonly, "Hanging by a thread" just like the famed sword.

"The Sword of Damocles; I was very sick over the period we were doing this album.I had my guitar with me and so music became something in my fight against death and it pulled me up and I'm pretty sure that I was getting better because of the music, it was something wonderful. I think it is a good example for people in the hospital waiting for a transplant or who are terminal; you can realize the dream that miracles can happen and music was there to help me fight the disease. I lost a lot of weight and now I'm skinny and very beautiful," he said once more with the hardy laugh of a man who knows of his good fortune.

"Life" is a 12-track record filled with talented players and performers which is one of the reasons why this current run of U.S. shows is limited to only five dates. Trying to get all who are involved schedules to line-up was difficult but Schuck doesn't seem to mind as anytime he can get dates here in the U.S he is very excited.

"We are supporting the album and all of the people we used are very busy and so we had to find the right schedule and that is why it's only five gigs but I think it is just the beginning. We had a concert in October in France and it was something fantastic but we were dreaming of playing in The States. A French musician playing in The States is a big thing for us, it is enormous and something big; it's only five concerts but it means a lot for us. We are playing in New Jersey, North Carolina, Boston; there is a lot going on and I'm pretty sure they will be great concerts."

Yes, it is only five concerts, two of which are on back to back nights within an hours drive of Central, NJ. The first is January 19 at North in Wayne, PA and the second at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City the following night on January 20 and the opening act is none other than a Chris Stamey project called Sneaker featuring Stamey and Mitch Easter. So; what's in store for show goers?

"I think you'll expect to see music lovers; we are all music lovers since we were kids and I think you can feel the respect for the music," said a very appreciative sounding Schuck. "You will see a lot of guitars because we are a guitar band. You will see my influences, the dB's, some British pop, some Beatles of course with lots of guitars, keys, harmonies and melodies. I co-wrote all of the songs on the album and we are in love with guitars and harmonies, melodies. So, you'll see something very energetic; I don't know if that is the right term in English but there is a lot of energy and high tempos. So, it's between nice melodies, sometimes nostalgic melodies and I think that is the best thing for a song; when you've got the energy and melody in the same song; I like that a lot. We have a female singer who has got a wonderful voice who is with us on tour and she sings with a lot of emotion and you'll catch that at the concerts."
