Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...11/30/23

"We've done it before," says a laughing Bywater Call vocalist Meghan Parnell speaking of the stage size at The Lizzie Rose Music Room. "We know it will work, we were there in the Spring and had a really awesome time. We know with this band and that room that it sometimes takes a little bit of imagination but The Lizzie Rose stage is not the smallest stage we've ever been on so, we'll make it work."

Based out of Toronto in Ontario Canada, Bywater Call's reach extends much farther than our neighbors to the north; as a matter of fact, the band's name and music come from parts which are very much south.

"Bywater is a neighborhood in New Orleans next to the French Quarter and Dave, my guitar player and partner in the band, the first time we ever went to that city we just fell in love with it," said a retrospective Parnell. "The vibe, the music, the musical community there, so, it is like the band gets the call to normally go back to that area but also to incorporate the feeling we get from there into our music. We're from Toronto, Canada and we're a seven piece Southern Soul, Gospel, Roots Rock; there are a lot of Influences in there. We have a horn section, we started forming the band in 2017 because Dave and I had been doing a lot of cover music; weddings and corporate functions. We kind of got to the point where we were like, we need to start writing our own music. We had been exposed to some contemporaries that were really inspiring us and we were like; alright, let's move forward and that is kind of how the band started."

"Everybody in the band with the exception of maybe one went to the same school here in Toronto and it has a really great music program. So, they are all jazz trained and the music we are doing is not jazz but what it gives them is the ability to be really flexible in their playing. We can throw a solo section at somebody and they can just go off and it influences the way we write music which is great! We've been playing together since 2017 and I believe we added the horn section in 2018 because we were like, this music needs this! We haven't been able to look back, it is what it is now, a seven piece band; although touring with a seven piece band is crazy (laughs) but I just don't think we can present it any other way. The influences from the base of blues to amazing Canadian bands that made headway in the genre of Americana and Southern Soul from Neil Young to The Band to Joni Mitchell; we have those, our hometown boys and that sound. Then there is Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding with contemporaries like Tedeschi Trucks, Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Marcus King showing us that you can bring that aesthetic into a modern band."

Thursday December 7 sees them pull into Tuckerton and one of the Garden State's favorite, intimate concert venues, The Lizzie Rose Music Room. When asked about touring here in the U.S. and how the size of this particular venue and others like it fits into their tour plans; her answer was rather, "Energetic."

"The States are such an important and large market especially for what we are doing and seeing our first year touring there; any kind of exposure to any audience, especially somewhere like that, you get in there and it is a small room and as a first time visitor there, it's small but it is a full room and that energy from everybody who is attending and everybody who is feeling that energy passes it on to somebody else. I don't know but I think those kinds of shows are really important for building a band. It is a bit easier to tour in The States than it is in Canada. In Canada, as an example, in the Spring we drove from our hometown down to Florida for a few shows and then a month later we drove north and west in our home province without leaving our home province; it took 20 hours north to get to our first gig on a run here at home," she laughed. Everything is so spread out here; you can line up some really nice routing in The States."

What about the music? Parnell has stated the varied and multiple influences of herself and her band mates but where do they feel they fit in; Blues? Jazz? Soul? Do they "Fit in" at all and how did Meghan herself become attached to this type of music?

"Some of it harkens back to my childhood," she began slowly as if searching for the correct explanation. "There were a few blues records around the house and my mom sang to me a lot, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix and whatever; she'd play the guitar and sing all kinds of stuff to me so, it was always kind of there. Then a few years before we started the band, I'd listen to some of the bands I mentioned earlier and tried seeing or hearing where I thought my voice stood in the world of contemporary female artists; that lends you to start digging into what their influences are and it kind of snowballs from there."

"I think in terms of the genre of Blues; we are by no stretch of the imagination a traditional blues band. We have a lot of influences outside of the blues and the blues are an important core piece of our influence but the band, they all went to Jazz school and are all trained jazz musicians. I think it's important for our art, as opposed to mimicking and recreating traditional blues music, to use that and try to come up with something different, new, retro yet innovative. I don't know if we've accomplished that yet but that's kind of where we are trying to go with it which also helps with the cycle of it; right? If you're trying to come up with something new then maybe you can help with the cycling of the genre. What it really comes down to for us is including all of the influences and the stuff we listen to that got us writing this music; again, it's retro, warm, warmth is really important when we are trying to write; I think that's the main thing, warmth and emotion in the music that touches people. I don't know if that makes any sense but that's what we are going for (laughs). You'll see a lot of that in our live performances and the ability for the guys in the band to do some improv and take a song on a journey. A big part of our show is just letting the guys have at it."

December 7 at The Lizzie Rose is one of those "Live performances" and so; what can one expect when attending the show?

"Hopefully we will take the audience on a journey; that is important for us. The emotion in our music is really important and I think we convey that and bring the audience along with us. We do some nice ballads and energetic tunes, hopefully some audience participation and a lot of play between the band members."

So, with a U.S. tour in progress; what is in store for them going forward?

"We have two studio albums that were with an indie label out of Toronto called Gypsy Soul but currently we are working independently. We're not quite ready for a new album but we've been doing a lot of writing and released two new singles earlier this year but at the moment we are kind of working in our own little world."
