Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...11/2/23

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 11/02/2023

"I think people were still kind of hesitating to come out in September with COVID on the uptick and no vaccine out yet, we decided to just wait and see if we could drum up a little bit more support," said Annie Raines before a recent rescheduled appearance with her long time partner Paul Rishell at The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton, NJ. "We're in the process of recording an album and also going through a lot of our old live shows that we have on all kinds of different formats and we have a friend with a great studio who is digitizing everything so that we can possibly release some live songs and old things we did in the studio that we didn't release before. So, we have a sort of profound archive of 30 years of audio and visual stuff."

Paul and Annie have been together for more than three decades, have recorded six albums, performed with or opened for acts such as John Sebastian, Rory Block, Susan Tedeschi, Ray Charles, Little Feat and a host of others; their album "Moving To The Country" won a W.C. Handy Award for "Acoustic Blues Album of the Year" and they have garnered multiple Blues Foundation Award nominations.

Last week, this dynamic duo made the trek down from their home state of Massachusetts to make yet another appearance at the "Little" music room which has become a favorite of many a musician and music lover; both Annie and Paul agree that The Lizzie Rose has a definite charm.

"We did a couple of sets at The Lizzie Rose, people like to take a break sometimes and have some snacks; we always really appreciate the hospitality at The Lizzie Rose and it has even gotten better over the years as they've developed. The community has kind of put together the whole place as a showcase venue. Now there is a real dressing room which we didn't have before," said Annie as she laughed. "They are really lovely to us there. They called us up at the very beginning and said, "We're doing this thing in an old hat shop; do you want to try it out?" So, we said, yeah, we're in and we drove down. So, this was like our fifth time there. A few years ago, a couple drove out from Indianapolis just to see us there; that's crazy but that's what they wanted to do. They drove all night and got there the next day and saw the show. It's gratifying because we are driving six or seven hours from Boston to South Jersey so it's a long way to come out and we really appreciate it when people come out and enjoy the music and talk to us after the show; we really missed that over the past few years."

"It's a cool little place and it does sound great and it has a small stage so it's not too voluminous," added Paul. "What Annie said about that couple, we were playing in Northern England one time, probably 20 years ago now and I was watching the door as we were playing the last 20 minutes of our last set and I watched this guy come in the door and everybody else was getting ready to leave after a couple of more songs. This guy comes in with his overcoat on and after we finished our set which was like two maybe two-and-a-half songs, I walked up to him. I started talking to him and it turns out, he got out of his job and took the boat to Northern England to see 15 minutes of our set and he was perfectly happy. When people do that and tell you about it casually; I made a point to ask him; where did you come from? He said, "Oh, Ireland." I said; come again? He said, "Yeah, I live on the coast, I got the boat and I'm here." He drove at least five or six hours; we've had people do that in lots of different places so, yeah, it's gratifying."

Paul and Annie are known mostly for their duo work and sometimes they will be joined by others when performing but for the most part, from onstage to producing albums; it is just the two of them but there is one thing that runs deep within them and that's the importance of keeping the tradition of the blues alive.

"We've not brought other musicians to The Lizzie Rose so far," explains Annie, "Sometimes when we're closer to home in Boston we bring out some folks to play with us like some of our former Berklee students. Paul was just awarded a grant to teach one of his former Berklee students; a guy from Israel who has been studying country blues and other kinds of world music and a cultural council gave him a big traditional artist apprenticeship grant which was a big honor that we're still trying to wrap our heads around; it's a two year program that we really appreciated to help keep traditions alive."

"In 2005 we formed our own label called Mojo Rodeo Records and that's been our label since then. We put out "A Night at Woodstock" on CD/DVD that came out on that label so no, we're not working with an industry label. We're working on some new material but we've actually dug deeper into the traditional country blues catalog and started playing music by artists that we've never covered before like Frank Stokes or some songs that are obscure, even to us. Memphis Minnie, we're doing some Memphis Minnie songs now that we didn't use to do. She is really an eye opener, she's such a real giant in the whole story of the blues and she tends to get relegated to the woman's chair like; oh yeah, there are women too doing this kind of thing. She really kind of saved the music in the '30s when nobody could get a record deal for a blues record and she was popular enough to keep making blues recordings when everybody else was shutting down."

Being a woman in blues music hasn't always been easy. Annie's citing of Memphis Minnie draws attention to one of the few success stories of women in blues music in years gone by but that game has changed with the successes of women in the genre like Bonnie Raitt, Samantha Fish, Ana Popovic, Shemekia Copeland and so many others. Raines is happy about the recent influx but more importantly the acceptance of female artists in blues music today is of far more importance.

"In the old days, people used to ask me this, "What's it like to be a woman harmonica player?" That was sort of what they call a face palm (laughs). I'd be like, OK; what's my point of reference? Really, it's good to be able to look back over 30 years and see how much things have changed as far as people courting mutual respect across the gender lines in the music. I think it was much more male dominated for a time and I think a lot of people who would come up listening to rock 'n' roll kind of missed out on the community that created the blues consisting of men and women and women singing like men and men singing like women. There is a lot of people getting together in the blues and it used to be kind of an obstacle in terms of having an elevated conversation about it but I think it sometimes helped me to not be seen as just another guy playing his harmonica. Sometimes I wasn't seen as a threat so that helped but sometimes I was seen as a threat, so it can go both ways."

"The first five or six years of recorded music from 1921 or whenever they started recording," continued Rishell, "The first five or six years were all blues recorded by women. No men recorded until 1925 or 1926, so all of those five years of recorded blues until you got to Bessie Smith who was the best of them until she was killed in a car accident and that's when the men started taking over. Lemon Jefferson sold more records than a lot of other people and he was the first man to do that. So, it's basically historically repeating itself going by that narrative. If you're selling guitars, you probably sell more guitars to guys than girls; so it's one hand washes the other in this business."

"Absolutely," interjected Raines, "I think any time anybody who is great out there, it helps everybody and puts bread on everybody's table too. It's not just a question of whether they are commercially successful but if they are devoted to sharing the stories of the music and if they've dedicated themselves to that it makes a big difference. We're all out here now and almost all of the old guys that we learned from are not around anymore; so we're it! So, anybody who cares about this music can really influence things a lot by supporting it. I see online too, a lot more women play harmonica at professional levels all over the world and in the U.S.; it has definitely mushroomed it and that's been a really good thing."

Paul & Annie will return to The Lizzie Rose Music Room on April 6 of 2024 for yet another appearance at one of their favorite "Hat shops" and if interested in finding out more about advance tickets or this great duo; please visit https://www.paulandannie.com/paul-and-annie .

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
