Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...1/11/24

"I wanted to go to art school, I went to Parsons; that's how I talked my parents into letting me go to New York in the middle of the '70s when it was considered to be a very dirty, dangerous place. So, yeah, I convinced them that I wanted to go to college there and that worked out pretty well. I made a few kind of not the best choices but overall, I was a good kid and worked hard in school so; I got away with it," said a laughing Amy Rigby as she discussed her start in music and her upcoming January 20 appearance at Randy Now's Man Cave in Hightstown, NJ.

"Not the best choices" is one thing but her "Choice" to pursue songwriting and music has surely turned out to be a great one for Amy whose journey began in western Pennsylvania.

"I started as a fan of music growing up in Pittsburgh during the Classic Rock days and then moved to New York City in '76 and started going to CBGBs," she recounted. "So, I was a big Punk fan and then I started writing songs and in the early '80s I started a Country band because it kind of felt like Punk was a little played out and like CBGBs, had kind of turned more Hardcore. I started discovering old Country music through thrift stores and flea markets and finding old records; I was always a big reader and so I got interested in the lyrics of Country music and started writing songs. I became a songwriter, playing guitar and started a band in the East Village and just kind of kept going from there."

Rigby states that she has always been a fan of music in general and through her family members was exposed to various types and styles but in a chicken or the egg kind of way; was it her love of music or playing of an instrument that piqued her interest?

"Love of music," she said immediately. "My parents were older so they were into Frank Sinatra and Broadway musicals and those great Broadway musicals of the '50s and '60s on record and the films like "Sound of Music" and "Sweet Charity." I definitely got into songs through my parents loving people like Burt Bacharach and Barbara Striesand and Dionne Warwick. So, it was kind of more like that old kind of classic pop music and through that I started playing piano. I was more of a visual artist but I did like to play piano and I wanted to learn some of those songs like "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" and "Up, Up and Away" and that kind of '60s pop music. I had an older brother and he was listening to early FM radio and he was really into Led Zeppelin and The Who and through him I kind of got interested in that but I also remember hearing Elton John on the radio and just really loving it. Elton John was my first massive musical crush, I got all of his records, I studied all of the liner notes; he was my first artist where I was like, wow and every album is a whole world unto itself and I became kind of obsessed with learning all of the lyrics. So, that is what kind of got me into studying albums, studying the total package and when I moved to New York, there was so much going on and musically happening right there in the city then and it was so much closer up than going to see a big rock show in an arena. Being in a little club like CBGBs or Max's and being so close to the musicians just made it seem like something that anybody could do if they had the nerve; I think that kind of inspired me to want to start doing music on my own but it took a little while to figure out how."

Oh, she figured it out and did so to the point where her songs are that rare combination of honest, funny and intellectually stimulating but above all else, they are "Relatable." Rigby has song titles such as "Diary of a Mod Housewife," "Summer of My Wasted Youth," "Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again?" and many more lyrically provoking songs that are sure to strike a chord or hit home with essentially, well, everyone.

"I think that honesty and sort of real life details are what I aim for in songwriting," she explained. "Some are more humorous than others but I'm just trying to be real; it's not what I really set out to do but that was the writing that I liked. That's what I think drew me to country music; the honesty and these were regular people living real lives and so, I think that is what I've gone for in my songwriting. I think for me, it's like writing fiction, you kind of make things up but you also project what you know and go through yourself into these scenarios. Some of it is actual, well, this is kind of what happened and some of it is based on things I overhear; I always have a notebook, I'm always writing down stuff I observe and conversations that I overhear and just kind of take it from there. Sometimes it's enough just to find one phrase; once, I overheard someone say, "Don't look at me in that tone of voice" and I was like, oh my God, that is such a great line and that turned into a song. I kind of imagined that it was these two other characters but it definitely felt like what was going on in my life at the time so it was like a good way to express what I was actually feeling, so there is always some element of truth."

There is more to Rigby than just music; she is an accomplished author, blogger and also has her own podcast. So, one might think she prefers to work alone but not so; she operates strictly as the situation allows and incorporates both her writing and music into most shows, even if things slowed due to world events over the last few years.

"I was in bands for years and then I started putting out solo albums and have done that and toured pretty much consistently for the past 30 years. The last couple of years obviously have not been the same because of the pandemic; it slowed things down a lot. I definitely have toured a lot less than I have for decades but I have a couple shows in January; I always go out and play. I have a new record that will come out sometime in 2024 so I'll do more then, I'm waiting for that to actually book some serious touring. My last extensive touring was in 2019, I had put a book out, I wrote a memoir called, "Girl To City" and I think I played about 35 cities here in the U.S. I book myself, some of it was in clubs and some of it was in bookstores so I took the book and did readings and played songs. Sometimes I go out with a band, sometimes I have a drummer and a bass player but these January shows are solo; it's just part of what I do. A writer writes, I'm writing another book, I have a podcast, I have a blog, so I just kind of keep going; it's my profession and my passion."

January 20 sees her come to Randy Now's Man Cave, located at 119 West Ward Street in Hightstown for a 7 p.m. show. What can we expect in such an intimate venue such as The Man Cave

"I'm playing solo, I guess I should ask Randy how long he wants me to play," she laughed. "A lot of times when I'm playing solo I sometimes do two sets, it depends on the set-up which can sometimes be good if it's a tight space where you can't really move around. It is the lyrics that people like to pay attention to; to get the most out of it, you kind of have to follow what I'm saying, the stories; ya' know? I'm not saying it's demanding and not enjoyable (laughs) but it can be nice to take a break in the middle. I'll be playing some old songs, some new stuff, I'll probably be doing a little reading from the book that came out in 2019 but also, I'm working on something else so I might throw something in from that. Some of the songs are funny, some are more poignant, so there will be a good mix."
