Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...10/6/22

By Danny Coleman

“I hope Google Maps knows,” laughed Cory Branan as he discussed getting to his upcoming 4 p.m. gig at Cats Luck in Neptune City, NJ on October 21, recording during the pandemic and more.

Riding the release of a new single called, "When In Rome, When In Memphis (When In Asbury Park)," which is off his upcoming album titled "When I Go I Ghost," Branan is once again out on the road touring and doing what comes naturally to him and that's performing but he is firmly non-committal when it comes to his "Style" of music.

“I’ve been doing this since 1999 and so yeah, I’m about to drop my sixth full-length album. I'm from here, in this area of Memphis. I was born in Memphis, raised in North Mississippi but moved around a lot. I lived in New York a bit and L.A. and Austin; I've been back in Nashville and the Memphis area for the past year. I don't know, I’m just sort of a storyteller, kind of songwriting stuff but not really beholden to genres; I end up sort of making the records how I hear them in my mind; song for song. So, it's all over the map frankly.”

“You have artists that are all over the place and then they have something that holds it together," he continued as he relayed how some artists fall into the trap of a "Formula" sound. Listen to Tom Waits, he pulls everything from Avante German to show theater stuff to Blues to old Tin Pan Alley music but his uniting thing is that gravelly voice but he pulls from all sorts of American Music. So; why not give yourself license to do that? It's more interesting to me to vary but you can also kind of give in to what record labels want; I guess maybe if you want more of a career (laughs) but people want to know what they’re getting; oh, am I getting vanilla ice cream? Am I getting strawberry ice cream in this container? A lot of people want it; you know? They want to know, which is fine but record companies are always chasing the tail of the last thing they had success with and what they don't realize is, it's coming up from the underground and new things are happening and they need to get updated. I don’t know, it’s the nature of the beast I guess.”

Being from Memphis and raised in North Mississippi, surely the blues genre had to have an influence on his music. Branan readily admits yes but he also is quick to "Pay homage" to the genre in his own unique way.

“Yeah, they're very highly, highly influential but I just stay away honestly because it's almost scripture to me. The Delta Blues and all that stuff; it's my sort of go to thing. I have such homage for it that I honor it by staying the fuck away from it (laughs) but it does inherently influence a lot of my songwriting and my playing leans heavily on some Piedmont Fingerpicking style. So, it works its way in that way but the songs are a little more; they're denser stories but I do love that music. Pretty much all of my fingerpicking style is influenced by Mississippi John Hurt; it's heavily influenced by that and all that stuff. Little Reverend Gary Davis but I can't pull off the thumb, he does a strange thing with his picking; it’s great.”

"When I Go I Ghost" has multiple industry heavyweights appearing on it; people such as Jason Isbell, Eric Slick and Gaslight Anthem's Brian Fallon. Branan attributes their contributions to his longevity.

“I've just been lucky, I've always had, since the first record, I've always had my friends on the records; on every record. So, I've been lucky enough to have been doing this for so long that I just I fell in with some really talented people and I usually don't have people on (a recording) unless I actually hear them because I wanna give them someplace where they can shine and not just have them on for the sake of having them on. So, over the years, I've had all kind of different folks on them but Brian specifically is from y’all’s area and I originally approached him about singing on “When In Rome..” because of the Asbury Park reference and he was like, “Yeah, I'll do that; could I also sing on “Oh Charlene?" Hell, I love that song” and I was like, super man, you can sing on the whole thing; he's a sweet dude and Slick is on the drums and he’s great.”

The new album is scheduled to be released on October 14 but with him being from the Memphis area; what's with the Asbury Park reference in the new single?

“I’ve played the (Asbury) Lanes and I've played The Pony a couple of times but I was actually on the road when I wrote that song and I was in Jersey so that's just sort of when the idea of the song came as I was just driving through Jersey. So, I ended up using it and obviously Memphis and Asbury Park have to me as much historical importance as Rome (laughs) so it was; it reminds me of the old Guy Clark; “I’ve seen that David, I've seen the Mona Lisa too but I've seen Doc Watson play “Columbus Stockade Blues” and it’s like you know, we have our own masterpieces here in America too.”

Branan loves to perform and is a true road warrior so, the last few years of uncertainty and limitations have been tough on him but like any resourceful creative; he found ways to persevere.

“Yeah, the tour starts on the October 13, the album actually doesn't drop until the fourteenth of this month so it's coming up in a couple weeks and then I'll be out from the beginning of it and I'm out all Fall and Winter. I think I'm off January and then go back out late Winter and in the Spring I'm just gonna start hitting it again. I usually do 130 or 140 shows a year anyway and obviously with the plague I had to find a side hustle to sort of stay afloat and I ended up recording like five cover records and putting them out direct to people with their sort of requests. I would do whatever the hell but yeah, it's nice to be back at it. I did some tours when we got the first all clear and then I've done a few tours this last year almost coinciding with each new strain of the plague (laughs) and I luckily managed to avoid it until a few weeks ago and it finally caught up to me”

So; what can we expect at a Cory Branan show?

“I’ve been doing a lot of my stuff solo over the years; at least the bulk of it I'd say is 90 percent solo. I piece a band together for festival stuff and I'll be doing it with a band on some local stuff but yeah this will be solo. I just bring the acoustic and the electric rig and I might be dragging along keyboards; I'd been playing keyboards during the lockdown a lot more so I might be running around the stage like a fool (laughs).”
