Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...10/31/24

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 10/31/2024

It's a song on the album with the same title that I wrote with a dear friend of mine named Joe Stark,"  says Marc Broussard about his recently released album, "Time is a Thief," It's a song about exactly that, time is gonna teach you lessons if you're not prepared to pay attention, it will force you to pay attention. I think, as a 42 year old man now, that sentiment is definitely much more fresh for me than ever before."

Broussard is someone who has seen the ups, downs, highs and lows of the industry and his art; he's a man who has taken chances, struggled, survived and now continues to be one of the more soulful voices in music today and even this recent record required some "Searching" on his part to find what he needed to complete the process.

"Time is a Thief" is all original, all written by myself and a handful of co-writers; one of which is the producer of the album, Eric Krasno and there are a couple or three that were written by Eric and another guy named Jeremy Most," he began with a laugh. "Interesting story, Jeremy Most is the guy that I actually wanted to produce the album. He produced a record for a girl named Emily King and I adored that album, it's all I listened to for about eight months. I told my manager, "I want Jeremy Most to produce my record;" I had a batch of about 30 songs that I'd been sitting on for years and I said, "I want Jeremy Most." Jeremy, unfortunately, is notoriously shy and virtually impossible to get in touch with. We searched in vain for two-and-one-half years to track him down and finally just gave up the search. Eric Krasno is a dear friend of mine who I've known for over 20 years and I adore everything he's done as well. I reached out to Eric in March of 2020 and said, "Look, I've got this batch of material, I think you'd be perfect to produce it but I think we ought to write a few tunes just to get the juices flowing, see how we work together blah, blah, blah" and within a week; we had an entire new record. It was during covid, so it wasn't exactly a good time to go in the studio back then. So, fast forward to around September of last year for when the final vocals were going to go on the tracks. At this point, Eric had tracked everything himself in his home studio in Los Angeles; I'd never made a record like this before. I never allowed anyone to cover all of the tracking and then I come in and do the final vocals. I'm also a little older and a little less inclined to waste time and so, about two weeks before I was slated to go out to L.A. and sing, I called Eric up just to make sure that he actually had a plan and I wasn't going there to waste my time. Sure enough, he said, "No, no ,no, we're gonna do XYZ and exactly this, this and this" and I said, "OK, I'll see you in a couple weeks" and right before we hang up, he says, "Oh by the way, J-Most is out here; should I ask him if he wants to work with us?" I said, "What do you mean out here?" He said, "Yeah, he's living in my guest house while he looks for a new place to live out here" and I was like; "What?! You're telling me the guy I've searched for for two-and-one-half years in vain happens to be in your guest bedroom?" So I said, "This is unreal, yes! Yeah, sure, ask him if he wants to work with us." So, about five minutes later, he texted me and it said, "He's in" and man, I cried like a baby. I felt the universe had just given me a big ol' green light. Jeremy and I hit it off like gangbusters. He's a sweetheart of a guy and a helluva musician. He and Eric took control of all of the tracking, they sang a little bit of the backing vocals as well and you can feel their influence all over this project for sure."

So, when he told Most that story; what was his reaction?

"He said, "I'm not that hard to find;" laughed Broussard once again. "He famously turned down John Legend; when I heard all of these little anecdotes like that, I thought, he's not gonna work with me unless he reaches out to me and it turns out, he's just kind of shy."

Broussard was a scant 20 year old when his music career took its first upswing but as previously mentioned; there are highs and then there are lows..

"Honestly, when I came into the business, I thought I was gonna be bigger than Michael Jackson in my 20 year old hubris," he chuckled. "In my 20 year old hubris, when I signed a record deal with Island Def Jam in 2002, I was very, very sure of myself and life humbled me. I basically assumed that because I was surrounded by seemingly competent people at Island Def Jam and at my management firm, that all I had to do was just kind of show up and everything would be alright. It wasn't until about 2011 that I realized that all of their failures fell on my head. All of their wins were collective wins for all of us but all of the failures would fall squarely on my stock price and that was a serious wake up call. So, that's when I started engaging with my career; that's when we launched the S.O.S Foundation and I was poor, I was broke. I told my managers, we should do these records for charity and they were like, "Dude, you don't have money to be giving away money, you can't do that" and I said, "Trust me, this is gonna work" and they did. Luckily it worked like a charm, it worked better than anything I could have ever imagined. Raising money for charity through the sale of my records gave my fans just that much more incentive to buy my albums when they came to the shows and it also ingratiat-ed us to a whole world of press; it allowed me to spend a little more time focused on the writing for original albums without starving my audience of music and on top of it all, we got to record these songs that we never would've recorded otherwise. So, all in all, it was much more of a success than I ever really imagined and luckily, it helped me right the ship in a lot of ways and then a new management company came in and we've been firing on all cylinders ever since."

Perseverance and perspective is paramount when you're an artist and eventually it will  pay off; if even only for one's own "Gratification."

"I think this album is really the culmination of me engaging fully; there was an album that we put out about a decade ago called, "A Life Worth Living" that was definitely the most engaged that I had been in any record making process and to get to this one and have it sound so good and have it so well received by everybody so far who has heard the singles we've released; in my 20 year career, I've never had the kind of momentum that we have going into this album and I think it's a testament to just how hard we've worked to get here. There is a lot of this business that involves delayed gratification. I sit on songs for half a decade or more sometimes. There is a song on this album called, "Give You The World" that's really doing well at shows and on streaming; I've been sitting on that song for six years. I knew it was gonna do business as soon as it got into my audience's ears but we just needed the right time and the right vehicle for it. When you book a tour in Europe, there are expenses that get laid out months in advance. There are hotels, flights and it's not until you get to the show and collect the check at the end of the night that you can celebrate the win; there's a whole lot of delayed gratification in this business."

After just finishing a swing in Europe promoting the new album; Marc had to take a different approach there as opposed to here in the U.S but either way; he very much looks forward to getting this new material out to the masses.

"This year is actually the 20th anniversary of an album called, "Carenco," my first and only album for Island Def Jam. Here in the States, that's my most popular album to date. So, we've been celebrating in the States all year by playing that album and kind of wrapping the show around that album but in Europe it's not so much of a blockbuster. Starting at the beginning of this month we head to Europe for a month and I can't tell you; I've never been this excited to start playing new material; this stuff is so cool. Krasno has a vibe, a very dark urban kind of vibe. Our writing process was just him sending me instrumental tracks to write to. So, he had total creative control over arrangements essentially and it was my job to work up a melody and lyric and as a result, his signature is really felt throughout the project; it's almost like playing your favorite covers. You adore these songs because they've been a part of your life for so long and Krasno's approach has been a part of my life for so long that getting to finally play this material in front of an audience is really like just trying to make him proud."
