Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...10/26/23

By Danny Coleman

"Friends & Family," began Firefall's Jock Bartley, "Our manager Len Fico who is also our record label, he suggested to me and Mark Andes when Mark was still in the band and who has since retired before we started this record; he said, "You know, the original guys in Firefall, many of you played in other famous bands; why don't you do an album of just their material?" When he said that, the lightbulb went off in my head and I said, "That's great but why don't we expand that?"

So began the process of Firefall's latest release, the aforementioned "Friends & Family," a collection of songs from the group's favorite artists, friends, past employers and "Family." Recently, guitarist and vocalist, Jock Bartley elaborated on the making of the record, the band's song choices, the certain criteria and taboo of the material and more.

"In 1976 when our first album came out of the box so big," we toured with Fleetwood Mac, Marshall Tucker, The Doobie Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Loggins and Messina and I thought, let's open it up and do a song of theirs too and Len said, "That's Great!" Once that Idea started taking shape, I knew that it was a really big responsibility to pick the right songs because some songs shouldn't be touched by anybody else. Len even suggested that we should do The Band, "Up On Cripple Creek" and I said, no freaking way! Levon Helm is the only guy who should ever sing that song. On the Heart song, I didn't know which one to do and "Barracuda" to me was off limits; no, we shouldn't do that and so, I didn't know which one to do by the Wilson sisters and our new amazing lead singer, John Basaha who was also in The Babys said, "I can really sing "What About Love?" great" and he did. In fact, "What About Love?" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" are John singing. When he and Steve Weinmeister rejoined the band; man, our vocals are over the top now and it was such a pleasure making this record."

Given the longevity of the band and the copious amount of musicians they've encountered, performed with and befriended; how was it possible to even begin choosing the material for this record?

"It was difficult yet sometimes really easy," explained Bartley. "Loggins and Messina, the obvious choice without even thinking was, "Angry Eyes." That was so much up Firefall's alley that it was really great doing that. I didn't know which Dan Fogelberg song to pick and I certainly didn't know which Doobie Brothers song to pick. On a side note, Dan Fogelberg, we kept that really close to the original. Our version doesn't sound like Dan's because there is a different vocalist, different guitar sounds, different studio, different time; on the Doobie Brothers song, "Long Train Runnin'"  I deliberately wanted to make that a bit different. Instead of going with the original Tommy Johnson signature guitar part, I kind of made the biggest part of the song the secondary guitar part and then we added a sax. We obviously tried to respectfully keep true to these songs and some of them sound different and some are right in the ballpark. So, it was really a challenge and really great."

Prior to the album's release several weeks ago, there was the customary release of singles to draw advance interest. Bartley and the boys chose their adaptation of Skynyrd's "Simple Man" as the first to be revealed; a dangerous yet brilliant move given the song's notoriety and popularity. A laughing Bartley explained how they intend on incorporating this album and tunes with such rich history into Firefall's performances.

"Well, the album came out at the end of September. "Simple Man" was the first single and "Long Train Runnin'" was the second; we play so many packages with all of these famous '70s bands that oftentimes we're only given 45 minutes to play and we have to play our big five or six songs. We're going to start playing two or three of these songs in our show and if it's a headline show where it's a 90 minute show or longer; we may even do four or five. We may even just do one or two of these songs as encore songs and keep the main part of our set just Firefall songs which we've got so many great ones of also."

"We had some guest stars play on this record. Actually, Howard Leese from Heart played the guitar solo on "Simple Man" and I doubled it and we made a big solo out of it. Guitar wizard John  Jorgenson played on The Byrds song and one of my friends in Colorado, John Magnie from The Subdudes is a great accordion player and to me, when you add an accordion to the right song; certainly not every song should have an accordion but when you add an accordion, it gives the song a down home, back porch kind of feel. I really wanted to do that on "Simple Man" and I really like our version and I really tried to, when I was playing the solo on that song; to try and keep true to how great those Lynyrd Skynyrd guitar players were."

Their last studio album of original material was 2020's "Comet," one that didn't really get a fair shake due to viruses, lockdowns and other things cutting into their promotional and tour schedules. Jock says the band has plans to promote this one as much as possible in a concentrated fashion but they also have an eye to the future.

"We don't really do tours anymore," he said with another laugh. "We're kind of weekend warriors where we go out for two or three gigs in Florida, California or wherever we go and we are playing a lot this fall. What's in store though is, we are doing a "Friends & Family" number 2 and I've already started on some of those songs and it's really fun. I do want to add some new Firefall songs to that as a bonus. The concept to me is so cool and there are a lot of songs we didn't choose from these bands like, "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star" by The Byrds or one of the songs we are doing is "Love the One You're With" by Stephen Stills. So, it's gonna be Volume Two and we'll kind of finish off this concept album."

"Concept album?" Are there any bands making those any longer? To the average fan and/or listener, this may seem like a collection of remakes but those in the know or long time fans of Firefall; they know the history. When asked the question; do you find it ironic that when you started out as a musician you played cover material and now after all of these years and the band's successes; you've returned to playing cover material? Bartley couldn't help but laugh.

"You know, it's funny because a lot of my friends here in Colorado play in bands and play cover tunes in clubs and I've been really fortunate and lucky in my life; thank you Rick Roberts and Larry Burnett our songwriters; have been since 1974 in Firefall; I haven't played in a cover band since college. So, it's kind of funny but the main thing in a group, Firefall, the Eagles, The Little River Band and some of those bands from the '70s; the main important thing is the song. Firefall always had some great songs to play and our first three albums sound so good today still and people love those songs with songs like "Mexico," "Strange Way" and "Cinderella;" unbelievable. So, this is a departure and so much fun because we are lovingly and respectfully treating these songs by other folks that we know; also, just the '60s and '70s, what a fertile time for American music, wow."

"The truth is," he went on,  "All of us later musicians learned from the best band ever; The Beatles. It was like, wow, you could write your own songs! Suddenly all of that group of '70s acts, particularly a band like the Eagles or Dan Fogelberg; it's like writing your own songs, playing and singing them to perfection and having them really connect with an audience; well, that is just great."
