Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...10/12/23

"Gardens Old, Flowers New" has been in the works for a while and some of these songs are decades old and haven't seen the light of day and some of them are brand new; that line appears in two different songs in different contexts," states legendary Folk artist Tom Rush as he discussed the upcoming release of his next album and his October 13 show at The Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA.

"Gardens Old, Flowers New" has been in the works for a while and takes its title not only from that line in those songs but from the selection of material which Rush has chosen for this record; some of which is never before heard recordings that are approximately 40 years old.

"One of the songs kind of fits that mold, it's a tune that the only recording of is an aircheck from Gene Shay's show in Philadelphia probably 40 or 50 years ago. I played it for my producer Matt Nakoa and he loved it and said, "Hey, let's do that one" so, it's an old song that has just come to light. Whatever song I play, I get immersed in the song and try to live it in the moment. This one particular song is called "Glory Road" and the guy is talking about leaving home when he was 14 and at the end of the song he says, "It was 40 years ago today that I first saw the sun," so I probably wrote it sometime around my fortieth birthday; he's homesick and wants to go home now. I think. 40 years ago, I was getting kind of road weary and wanting to settle down, which didn't really happen. I quit showbiz for nine months and decided that I really enjoyed playing for people so I went back to it. I wasn't traveling; there was a five year period where I had 10 days off total, not in a row and I got burned out."

The "Mold" he refers to is the rebirth of a song which has finally matured; like some people, it takes time for things to realize their potential. So; when will the album be released?

"It's all ready and I'm just waiting on the artwork. It's going to be either 13 or 14 tracks depending on how you count them. There is a song that segues into an instrumental and if you count that as two different songs, then it is 14 tracks," he said with a dry laugh. "I'm thinking it will be released to the public probably in January but meanwhile, I'm hoping to get it out to my Kickstarter subscribers, they raised the money to pay for it so I want to get it out to them immediately in advance of anybody else and then I'll have it on my website  and sell it at shows up until January when it goes public."

Rush has influenced the careers of notables such as, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Garth Brooks and Joni Mitchell to name a few; something he seems to look back on with kind of an "Aw shucks" reflection but when asked about the differences in genre titles such as "Folk" and "Americana," his philosophical side comes to the forefront.

"Let's focus on folk for a second, as an academic, folk music, those are the traditional songs that nobody wrote. "Barbara Allen" for instance and they exist in dozens of different versions, none of which is the correct version and they are handed down from generation to generation; that's folk music, it's not folk music even if your name is Woody Guthrie," he explained. "Although, to be fair, Guthrie did take a lot of traditional tunes and put new words to them but to me, folk music are those traditional songs. That's where I got started, that's where I started out playing at the coffee houses in Cambridge, MA. The stuff I'm doing now; I don't consider it to be folk music, I don't know what to call it. I guess I'll settle for Americana or Singer-Songwriter. I'm happy to say it's not my problem (laughs), years ago, I was inducted into the Boston Music Hall of Fame; I realized later, there actually is no hall, it's a file drawer of fame (laughs) but it was a great honor and on the program, there was a young woman who was being given the "Female Pop-Singer of the Year" award for her album and the curious thing was; a year earlier, for the same album, she got the "Female Folk-Singer of the Year" award and the only thing that had happened in the interim was, she sold a million copies. So, the clear message was, if it sells, it can't be folk (laughs)." I'll go even farther back in my history, when my first album came out, it was distributed in the Boston/Cambridge area and I went into the Harvard Coop record store and my album was in the "Folk" section. So, I got the manager and I said, I do some traditional songs but I also do some blues and he took it and put it in the "Blues" section and I said, wait a minute, I also do some country and he put me in the "Country" section and he finally got sick of it and I ended up in "Miscellaneous" so, I learned my lesson, don't argue (laughs)."

Over the past several years, Rush has been working with the aforementioned Matt Nakoa; someone he relies on as a producer and sidekick when on the road. This go 'round though, Nakoa will be absent so; what can we expect at The Sellersville Theater?

"Matt has his own career going and he's getting busier and busier. I've got a young guy named Seth Glier who is a brilliant musician, he's as brilliant as Matt but he's not Matt, they are quite different from each other but he's also a jaw droppingly great singer, songwriter and instrumentalist. We'll probably do two 45 to 50 minute sets with an intermission. This tour is actually only two dates over the weekend, I'm trying to do more and more of that; I scold my booking agent if she has me doing more than four shows in a row (laughs). After Sellersville, we head up to Schenectady, NY and then home and may I add one other thing? I'm doing this online series called, "Rockport Sundays" and it's a lot of fun. A new episode is posted every Sunday and they stay up for eight weeks; it's through Patreon but you can get to it through my website www.TomRush.com

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
