Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...05/16/24

"I am doing well or at least I hope so," laughed singer songwriter Stephanie Sammons as she spoke about her past, the May 3 release of her latest album, "Time and Evolution," the present and what her future holds.

Like many in the art field, Stephanie's upbringing saw very supportive parents who appreciated her desire to create but also felt that passion was best left as a "side job" and like most kids, she followed her parents advice which even landed her here in New Jersey for a spell.

"Oh gosh; where should I begin? She said once again with a laugh. "I began my career as a financial planner and that's what I've done for a living for the bulk of my career. I had parents who led me in that direction of getting a business degree in college and you know, you can do music on the side and songwriting on the side and so, that was the path that I took. So, I've always had this kind of dual career where I'm using both sides of my brain. I am still a practicing financial planner, I have my own firm, it's small, it's boutique, it affords me life balance and the ability to do songwriting and pursue this career as well. I call it numbers and notes, math and music; there is something about the two things that is an interesting blend of left brain and right brain in my view; being a songwriter and being a financial planner but I spent many weeks of my life in Princeton, NJ because I was with Merrill Lynch in my early career and in Weehawken because I was with UBS and they were headquartered there and Hoboken; all kinds of neat places."

The fact that Sammons never lost sight of the prize, even though holding down a full-time job speaks volumes about her determination and grit but she readily admits; it wasn't always that way.

"I've always had a deep desire to be a performer but I'm terribly introverted," she said slowly. "I came to love music through the church choir; I was raised in a Southern Baptist home and so all of those old church hymns are just ingrained in me but I never thought I was a very good singer. I had a choir teacher when I was young who said, "You just don't sing loud enough, move along;" I was trying out for a part in a play and that crushed me and I was like, OK, I'm terrible. Down the road, I taught myself how to play the guitar, got better, worked on my voice and worked on my confidence and then I started writing and recording my first EP which was a five song EP that I put out in 2010 which was right after the great financial crisis. I had lost my job at Merrill Lynch because I was in management at the time and they were downsizing and I thought; you know what? I'm gonna write some songs, find a producer and put it out there. So, I did that in 2010, I did it again in 2017; there is something about these seven year increments with me and I don't know why, but what really launched me into "I have to do this" is, I started coming to Nashville right around the time I put the 2017 EP out. I had probably been to 30 or so of these performing songwriter workshops that are small group workshops with very accomplished singer songwriters of which most were Grammy nominated and I think one of them won a Grammy; Mary Gauthier, Jonatha Brooke, Emily Saliers, Beth Nielsen Chapman and I just realized, these songwriters are pretty good singers, pretty good guitar players and very good songwriters and I ended up finding my tribe of songwriting peers here in Nashville and of all of us who have gone to those workshops and I've made lifelong friends there; I'm one of the only ones, one of the few who has taken it to the next level. I've applied my learnings from these mentors, built relationships and friendships with these mentors and really wanted to be the best that I can be at this. I'm competitive, I played basketball in college, not competitive in a comparative sense but I just wanted to live up to my full potential. So, that was really when it began and that's when I decided to turn pro, it was after learning so many nuggets of wisdom from these accomplished singer songwriters over these last six or seven years. That is what led me into it. I always wanted to do it but the timing had to be right for me and for some reason, I thought, I'm past my prime, I had all of these excuses; what would my clients think? I'm a financial planner, I can't also do this, it's not practical and so, I had to overcome all of those excuses and say; you know what? It's now or never! You only live once and I've got to do this, I want to do this.I want to write and perform and inspire people, make people feel something and share this gift with others."

After two EPs; what made her go full-length with "Time and Evolution?"

"Well, number one, it was consistent with this decision to go pro because I believe that is the way to do it, the way to show you're committed, it's a project; it's a very intensive process to get that done and accomplished. I also had the songs, I had enough songs to do it and through a mutual friend I found Mary Bragg and I was like, gosh, I know Mary Bragg will get my music. I know she would understand it and be thoughtful about it and she was the best person I could have ever found to work with on a project like this with these intense kinds of songs that I write. These songs have depth and are hopefully thought provoking; they are not all like that but most of them are. So, Mary Bragg said yes that she would love to work with me after listening to some of my music and that was last summer. So, we went into Sound Emporium Studios, here in Nashville, Studio B which is a little smaller lovely studio and we knocked it out. We recorded the whole thing in a week and it was hard, it was very intense. We did live takes and then it was a process of, in terms of the vocals, where I sang each song three times. One of those takes, usually your first or second which ends up being your best take and if you miss a note here or there you've got a couple of other takes if need be to help with that. The band recorded most of their parts with me singing live and then I went back over and sang the songs after that."

A Southern Baptist from the Dallas, Texas area, as you'll read, has its upside and its down but surely those choir roots of Gospel and Blues music had their influence on her and her art; no?

"Oh definitely! The influence is in there, the church influence is definitely in my music. I use a lot of religious and biblical imagery in my songs; I don't know that you would hear any blues, maybe some undertones but outright bluesy chords or styles with regards to this collection of songs, no but I like that you bring that up because I need to explore that more deeply; you bring up a good point. The church that I grew up in, the hymns that resonated with me were the ones with the sweet melodies; those are the ones that are still stuck in my head and the ones that I remember and I think those types of melodies run through this collection of songs. There is definitely a theme or a thread that runs through this album and if I could define it succinctly, it's really this ongoing exploration and rediscovery of faith. My concept of spiritual faith as a young person, once I figured out who I was, a gay person at the age of 19, my concept of faith was completely shattered. The religious doctrine I was taught said, you're going to Hell and we don't accept you. We reject you, God rejects you and so I've honestly been spinning out of orbit all of these years trying to figure out what I have faith in; is it people? Humanity? Family? I just felt disappointed by everything and everyone and these songs are a reflection of losing my faith spiritually and otherwise, questioning my faith and trying to  understand the indiscriminate nature of suffering. Why her and not me? These kinds of thoughts are always running through my mind. How can one religious group say these people will get into heaven and these people won't? That's just maddening to me and so that is the core central theme to the album and part of it is tearing down some of that harmful church doctrine and trying to unlearn it, coming to terms with the shame that I've experienced in my life and really being OK with who I am. These sorts of things are all throughout the album and the title, "Time and Evolution," what that means is, everything takes time and everything changes; that's the hope. I've seen my family go from despair and distance and separation between me and my family for example to ultimately reconciling our relationships and love has won, love has prevailed. That's the whole idea behind the title, this album is a journey of rediscovering faith and it takes time, it has taken a long time for healing to happen and for love to shine through. Society has also changed, we change as people, nothing stays the same and everything takes time and everything changes and thank God for that."

Now that the album is released; does she have any tour plans or promotional strategies to get it out to the masses?

"I've no expectations of the outcome, of it going viral or getting discovered by new audiences; that's super tough," she stated realistically. "The joy is in making the music and writing the songs and getting them out to the world and if 10 people hear them and they are moved or inspired that's great and if thousands do, that's wonderful. There is not an official tour, I'll be playing selective events, festivals and things of that nature. I'm really just trying to make my way in this world of being a performing songwriter and be present at events and build relationships and network; it's quite amazing how doors open and opportunities come up. We actually host house concerts in our home and that has been a wonderful way to share with the community, perform and bring in guests to sing along with me; I've got some things up my sleeve but not an official tour at this time."
