Makin Waves Song Of The Week: "Tell That Girl To Shut Up" By The Cynz

The Cynz’s latest single, a cover of Holly and The Italians’ 1980 classic “Tell That Girl To Shut Up,” is the Makin Waves Song of the Week.

Jersey punk faves The Cynz have taken a fun detour from songwriting with a cover of Holly and The Italians’ 1980 new wave classic “Tell That Girl To Shut Up.”

Their second single for the well-respected Central Jersey indie Jem Records is the Makin Waves Song of the Week.

As the Makin Waves Song of the Week, “Tell That Girl To Shut Up” also can be heard between 6 and 8 p.m. on Jan. 13 on “Radio Jersey” at ThePenguinRocks.com. If you miss it, you can tune in any time in the archives at The Penguin or at MixCloud.

JEM President Marty Scott suggested The Cynz cover “Tell That Girl To Shut Up,” which was composed by punk great Holly Beth Vincent, also known for her work with The Waitresses. As a result, The Cynz front woman Cyndi Dawson delivers a bombshell performance thanks to a naturally rebellious style that compliments the cover.

“We’ve always been fans, and we approached this track with great respect for Holly Vincent,” said Cyndi, who co-founded the band a decade ago with guitarist Henry Seiz. “We put our own Cynz style on it while keeping it a tribute to its rocking origins.”

Global airplay of the tune may lead to more overseas touring for The Cynz, a favorite of Little Steven’s Underground Garage, as is the case with label mates The Anderson Council.

The song has become a fun staple of a live show that is part visual tsunami, part shamanic rock ‘n’ roll. See it for yourself when The Cynz play Feb. 4 at Pino’s with The Anderson Council, as well as RGD.

“Tell the Girl to Shut Up” follows The Cynz’s 2022 Jem debut, “Narrow Hips,” as well as several earlier singles, three LPs and an EP since forming in 2011.
