Lighthouse International Film Society presents a screening of "Irena

(LOVELADIES, NJ) -- The Lighthouse International Film Society presents a screening of Irena's Vow and the short film, Humo, on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies. While the events of this film may have taken place more than 80 years ago, and half-a-world away, it's important to know that the story told in Irena's Vow is just as relevant and inspirational today as ever.  The screening begins at 7:30pm.

Written by A-list Hollywood screenwriter Dan Gordon, Irena’s Vow is based on the true story of Irena Gut Opdyke, a young nurse living in Poland during the Nazi Regime.

As the 19-year-old housekeeper to a high-ranking Nazi officer, Irena learns of the impending “liquidation” of a dozen Jewish workers in her employ; prompting her to shelter them in the safest place she can think of—the basement of the commandant's house in which she works.

Over the next two years, Irena uses her wit, humor and bottomless source of fortitude to hide her friends until the German occupation ends; concealing them from festive Nazi parties, a lurid blackmail scheme, and even the birth of a child.

Following a 2009 NYC production of Dan Gordon’s Irena’s Vow stage play, he adapted the work for the screen. The film, completed in 2022, is directed by award-winning Canadian director Louise Archambault and stars several of Canada’s best known actors, including Sophie Nélisse and Dougray Scott; and the internationally renowned Andrzej Seweryn.

Most importantly to director Louise Archambault, she wants to remind us that we need inspiring, true stories like this one now more than ever; for extending a hand to others regardless of religion, culture or race.

2024 Oscars Short Film Contender Humo will follow screening of Irena's Vow.  Animated in stop motion, Humo is the first-person account of a small boy living in a Nazi concentration camp.

EVENT PREVIEWS

A Girl Can Touch the Sky, by Ravinol Chambers, is an immersive documentary that takes the audience deep into the culture and sometimes obtrusive gender roles across India. Chambers who was once a monk in the city of Vrindavan, India helps to shine a lot on the situations that are most pressing to many girls in the villages of India. As he and a crew travel down the west coast of India, they hope to raise awareness about the difficulties girls in the area have in accessing education. The documentary provides a manifold of interviews that discuss the education topic for girls from different points of view. Chambers shows a plethora of conflicting opinions that help the viewer become entrenched in the complex culture of India. We see disappointed fathers, hopeful girls, and educators speak on the matter at hand.
